Satellites Invading Privacy: When Eyes in the Sky Start Looking Right at You
lbedo Space is creating satellites for overhead surveillance that have ability to invade privacy in areas once seen as intrinsically off limits, such as your backyard. The company claims it will image people, but will not identify them. It may be possible to identify vehicles. Albedo Space was criticized for being a “giant camera in the sky for any government to use at any time without our knowledge.” Albedo plans to launch its first satellite in early 2025. Investors in Albedo include Breakthrough Energy Ventures, the investment firm of Bill Gates. Albedo’s strategic advisory board includes former directors of the CIA and the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, an arm of the Pentagon.
Albedo aims to image objects as small as 10 centimeters, or four inches. The technology became possible because the Trump administration in 2018 took steps to relax the regulations that govern civil satellite resolution. Albedo’s website says its imagery can help governments “monitor hotspots, eliminate uncertainty, and mobilize with speed.”
