CHARLESTON, WV: "Police officers across the Mountain State will be trained in an entirely new way. A ribbon-cutting ceremony at the West Virginia State Capitol on Wednesday launched Project Emotional Intelligence, a training system designed to decrease the rates of physical encounters and strengthen officers’ understanding of their own biases. This program, a partnership between TalentSmartEQ and West Virginia police departments, will also emphasize de-escalating skills and help make the officers more aware of how their emotions may affect their job performance. Four key components of the training are focus on self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and relationship management.
U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) was a major supporter of this effort and believes it will make both the public and the police feel safer.
“It makes sure that all of our law enforcement, all of our police officers understand emotional intelligence. That goes into policing to keep them safer, to keep the community safer and also know what they’re walking into in these really difficult situations,” said Manchin.
Manchin went on to say that this is the first statewide training of its kind and that he expects it to transform how the police operate."
