In 1941, Germany invaded the Soviet Union with 150 divisions and 3 million soldiers. This included 19 Panzer divisions, 3,000 tanks, 7,000 artillery pieces, and 2,500 aircraft. The invasion, known as Operation Barbarossa, was the largest invasion force ever assembled.
The Germans also had 36 divisions from their allies, including 16 Finnish, 15 Rumanian, three Italian, and two Slovakian.
The Eastern Front
in World War II was about 1,500–1,700 kilometers long. It stretched from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea, a distance of about 800 miles. However, if measured along the borders between the opposing countries, it was more than twice that distance.
