Trump’s lawyers call for dismissal of classified documents case, citing presidential immunity

Updated 12:27 AM EST, February 23, 2024

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former President Donald Trump’s legal team filed multiple motions Thursday night urging a Florida judge to dismiss the criminal case charging him with illegally retaining classified documents, claiming in part that presidential immunity protects him from prosecution — an argument they have already submitted to the U.S. Supreme Court in his election interference case.

Lawyers Christopher Kise and Todd Blanche wrote that the charges “turn on his alleged decision to designate records as personal under the Presidential Records Act (PRA) and to cause the records to be moved from the White House to Mar-a-Lago.” Since Trump made this decision while he was still in office, they wrote, it “was an official act, and as such is subject to presidential immunity.”

https://apnews.comTrump faces dozens of felony counts in federal court in Florida accusing him of illegally hoarding classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate and obstructing government efforts to retrieve them. The case is currently set for trial on May 20, but that date could be pushed back.

Trump’s lawyers also argued that Attorney General Merrick Garland’s appointment of special counsel Jack Smith to investigate the former president was “unlawful” and grounds for dismissal of the documents case.

Smith’s other case against Trump was unveiled in August when the former president was indicted in Washington on felony charges for working to overturn the results of the 2020 election in the run-up to the violent riot by his supporters at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

Trump pledges to defend Christianity against the left, which he says wants 'to tear down crosses'

WILL WEISSERT Thu, February 22, 2024 at 8:50 PM PST

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Former President Donald Trump promised to use a second term in the White House to defend Christian values and even suggested he'd shield the faith's central iconography, warning a convention of religious broadcasters on Thursday night that the left wants “to tear down crosses.”

“Remember, every communist regime throughout history has tried to stamp out the churches, just like every fascist regime has tried to co-opt them and control them. And, in America, the radical left is trying to do both," Trump told hundreds of cheering attendees at the National Religious Broadcasters International Christian Media Convention in Nashville.

“They want to tear down crosses where they can, and cover them up with social justice flags,” Trump added. “But no one will be touching the cross of Christ under the Trump administration, I swear to you.”

Pledging protections for the symbol of Christianity recalled the former president recently telling the National Rifle Association, "No one will lay a finger on your firearms.” It also comes as leading conservatives have increasingly called on the Trump to openly build his second term around Christian values, should he win.

Trump is favored in a Republican primary where the once crowded field has dwindled to just him and his former ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley. The Christian media gathering, where sponsors distributed free red and white baseball caps emblazoned with “Make America Pray Again,” was exceedingly friendly territory for the former president, whose address often felt more like a rally than a staid convention speech.

“The left is trying to shame Christians," Trump said. "They’re trying to shame us. I’m a very proud Christian.”

Trump brought the crowd to its feet repeatedly and frequently championed his record on abortion, including appointing three conservative Supreme Court justices who helped overturn the Roe v. Wade decision. But he notably didn't mention the Alabama Supreme Court ruling that has prompted providers there to pause in vitro fertilization after justices ruled that frozen embryos could be considered children under state law.

President Joe Biden 's reelection campaign released a blank statement on the matter late Thursday, ironically calling attention to Trump's lack of reaction on the "Alabama IVF ruling he is responsible for.”

Instead, Trump used his speech to boast that he had used his first term to do “more to uphold religious freedom than any administration in history.”

“The enthusiasm for this election coming up in November is far greater than it was in 2016 or 2020," he said. "Far greater, it’s not even a contest.”

Tennessee holds its primary on Super Tuesday, March 5, when many states around the country vote and could move Trump to the cusp of claiming the Republican nomination.

Some religious leaders were initially hesitant to get behind multi-divorcee Trump when he first ran for president in 2016, but now they are among his mostly solidly loyal “Make America Great Again” base.

That's despite a personal history that has only gotten more checkered in recent years, including Trump being indicted in New York in connection with hush money payments made to a porn actress in an attempt to suppress an extramarital affair.

“When he came onto the scene, people were skeptical,” said Troy Miller, president and CEO of the National Religious Broadcasters. “But I think, as they’ve learned more and listened to Donald Trump speak, the one thing I hear all the time from people … is that they really feel like Donald Trump understands them and that’s the biggest connection that people make is, ‘This is a guy in politics who gets us, who understands us, who doesn’t talk like he’s an elitist and talk down to us.’”

RECAP: Tucker Carlson’s Putin interview

Politics Christian Baha / AB 4 hours ago

Former Fox News host Tucker Carlson's recent two-hour interview with Russian President Vladimir Putin grasped the world's attention, offering insight into Moscow's perspective on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, as well as his country’s relations with the United States.

In the opening minutes of the interview, Carlson inquired the Russian head of state whether Moscow had reached its military goals in its operation in Ukraine, to which Putin replied that the primary goal of "denazification" of Ukraine had not yet been achieved. "This means the prohibition of all kinds of neo-Nazi movements," the Russian president said, underscoring that it is crucial to "get rid of" what he described as leadership that supports Nazism. Putin accused Ukraine's government of harboring neo-Nazi elements that pose a threat to the Russian population in the eastern parts of Ukraine, which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has consistently denied.

Putin revealed that Moscow had sought negotiations to resolve the conflict with Ukraine in March 2022 but indicated that talks collapsed after Kiev withdrew from the Istanbul talks, which later led to Zelensky's decree on a negotiation ban with Russia. It was agreed under the Istanbul negotiations that Russia would withdraw its forces from the vicinity of Kiev, while in turn, Ukraine would prohibit neo-Nazi practices at the legislative level, Putin noted. However, the Russian president claimed Kiev tossed all agreements into the "bin" and "got prepared for a longstanding armed confrontation with the help of the United States and its satellites in Europe."

During the conversation, Putin also referred to Ukraine as an "artificial state" born out of the Soviet Union. Furthermore, Putin's assertion that Poland collaborated with Adolf Hitler and triggered the start of World War II by refusing to cede the Danzig Corridor to Nazi Germany sparked significant criticism from Polish officials.

The Russian president also reflected on his country's ties with the United States following the start of the military operation in Ukraine, strongly criticizing Washington's provision of weapons to Ukraine and highlighting his belief that the conflict could end "within a few weeks" if the US ceased its military support for Kiev. Putin also disclosed that he has had no communication with his US counterpart Joe Biden since February 24, 2022. "Why would I call him? What should I talk to him about? Or beg him for what? ‘You're going to deliver such and such weapons to Ukraine. Oh, I'm so afraid, please don't do that.' What is there to talk about?," Putin emphasized.

The Russian head of state also discussed Moscow's unsuccessful efforts to collaborate with Washington in deterring global security threats, claiming that the US declined Russia's proposal to jointly develop a missile defense system and Moscow's request to become a member of NATO, which later saw the alliance's expansion to the eastern part of Europe, contrary to assurances given to Russia.

In response to Carlson's question about the party responsible for sabotaging Nord Stream, Putin placed the blame on the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), stressing that the agency not only had the interest to do so but also the necessary capabilities to go "to the bottom of the Baltic Sea and carry out this explosion."

Zelensky re-ups invite for Trump to visit Ukrainian front lines

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday re-upped his offer to give Donald Trump a tour of the front lines of his country’s war with Russia.

“I suggest [for] him just to come. I’m ready to go with him,” the Ukrainian leader told Fox News “Special Report” host Bret Baier during an interview from Kupiansk, just a mile and half from Russian troop positions on the war’s eastern front.

“Maybe he wants alone, without me. It doesn’t matter for me. Come, see people, just to speak to them on the street,” Zelensky said.

When asked by Baier what he would tell the Republican presidential primary front-runner if he were to visit the battlefield, Zelensky suggested that the ever-present sound of artillery fire would do the talking.

“I think his eyes, first of all, his eyes, ears … will tell him what’s going on,” the Ukrainian president said.

Zelensky has extended invitations for Trump to visit the war-torn country on a few occasions, but the war-time president took it a step further at the Munich Security Conference last week, where he first made the offer to take the 77-year-old former president on a tour of the front lines.

“If Trump, Mr. Trump, if he will come, I am ready even to go with him to the front line,” Zelensky, 46, said at the annual policy summit in Germany.

He told Baier that the invitation is open to others as well.

“I’m happy to see all the candidates and all the people who are decision-makers or can support, not to be against,” Zelensky said. “Just understand what the war in Ukraine means, who opened this war, who began it, and what’s going on, what’s around, what brilliant Ukraine we had.”

“We have [a] beautiful country, but, in the war, it’s another picture and other lives.”

Trump has recently argued that Congress shouldn’t approve additional aid to Ukraine “unless it is done as a loan.”

The former president has also insisted that if elected to a second term in the White House he would end the conflict “within 24 hours” – a boast light on details.

“See, I can’t understand how it can be,” Zelensky said of Trump’s claim. “He can solve this problem, this tragedy with me, yes, of course. He – I will explain everything. And he will explain what his thoughts. Maybe he has some ideas. I don’t know.

“But he will see what’s going on. And, after that, I think he will change his mind, and he will – understand that there is no two, two sides of this war. There is only one enemy, and this is the position of Putin.”

CBS News fires journalist who investigated Biden family and 'SEIZES her personal notes and research' with union accusing network of violating her First Amendment rights

Catherine Herridge was fired from CBS News in layoffs earlier this month

SAG-AFTRA, the CBS workers' union, accused company of seizing her notes

CBS insists it has not reviewed her notes and is prepared to return them

By Keith Griffith For Dailymail.com Published: 00:17 EST, 23 February 2024 | Updated: 01:26 EST, 23 February 2024

CBS News has fired a high-profile reporter who covered investigations into the Biden family, and the network is accused of seizing her personal notes in a move her union calls 'completely inappropriate' and 'very unusual.'

Catherine Herridge, a veteran reporter covering national security and intelligence, was among the hundreds of CBS employees who were laid off by parent company Paramount last week.

In a statement on Thursday, SAG-AFTRA, the union representing CBS employees, said it 'strongly condemns CBS News' decision to seize Catherine Herridge's reporter notes and research from her office, including confidential source information.'

'This action is deeply concerning to the union because it sets a dangerous precedent for all media professionals and threatens the very foundation of the First Amendment,' the statement added.

However, CBS denied claims that it had improperly seized Herridge's private files and told DailyMail.com that it planned to return the materials to her.

'Catherine's personal belongings were delivered to her home one week ago, and we are prepared to pack up the rest of her files immediately on her behalf – with her representative present as she requested,' said a CBS News spokesperson.

'We have respected her request to not go through the files, and out of our concern for confidential sources, the office she occupied has remained secure since her departure,' CBS said.

The network said it is still 'awaiting a response' from Herridge or her representative to arrange the transfer files back to the reporter.

Herridge had recently covered the House impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden, special counsel Robert Hur's report on his handling of classified documents, and the criminal charges against Hunter Biden.

Her inclusion in recent layoffs puzzled some industry observers, as she regularly broke news and landed scoops for CBS.

Herridge has not publicly commented on her firing, other than to share the union statement about the matter on X.

'It is completely inappropriate for an employer to lay off a reporter and take the very unusual step of retaining and searching the reporter's files, inclusive of confidential source identification and information,' the union said.

'The retention of a media professional's reporting materials by their former employer is a serious break with traditional practices which supports the immediate return of reporting materials,' the union added.

Citing sources, the New York Post claimed that Herridge had been pursuing a story related to Hunter Biden's abandoned laptop, and that she had 'encountered roadblocks' from management over her coverage of the First Son.

Herridge in November 2022 authenticated the laptop, which the Post had first reported on in October 2020.

Separately, Herridge has been in the middle of a high-profile court battle over her refusal to reveal sources for articles she wrote in 2017.

A judge has demanded she reveal sources used in a series of articles about a Chinese American scientist who was investigated by the FBI but never charged with wrongdoing.

Herridge could face fines of up to $5,000 per day if she refuses to be interviewed under oath for the case.

Fox News, where she worked at the time, has been covering her legal fees in the case.

Navalny's mother said she saw the body of her son in a Siberian morgue but is being threatened by investigators into agreeing to a secret funeral for him. The investigators set a series of conditions to release the body to her, a Navalny foundation spokesperson said, noting that she was threatened into agreeing to these conditions.

WARNING - DISTURBING

A fascinating case of a massive Satanic cult discovered in Hampstead by the police. The case was amazingly well documented by camera during the interviews of the children Alisa and Gabriel. Scenes of satanic rituals, sexual abuse, infant murder and cannibalism were described in vivid detail by the children.

Those who were named by the children in the Cult include; the children’s biological father, a number of the staff members and parents of their classmates at the school, members of the police force in the schools jurisdiction, members of the Hampstead community including shop and restaurant owners, staff from at least 7 other schools in the area, and clergy members from the local church. All of these videos and details were private case files that were later leaked to the public.

The children were later intimidated, told to redact their stories, and taken back by their abusers.

The mother has never seen her children again.

The lady who exposed these tapes was sentenced to 9 years of her life in prison.

This case is massive in itself with who is incriminated. There are now updates in 2022, and there is a brief covering of it by someone who has also been exposed to this abuse.

Intuitive Machines makes first U.S. moon landing in 51 years

While it reached the surface and was communicating with the ground, the exact condition of the lander was unknown.

For the first time since the last of the Apollo missions in 1972, an American spacecraft reached the surface of the moon Thursday, a significant step toward NASA’s plan to eventually return astronauts to Earth’s closest celestial neighbor.

After a tense several minutes in which ground controllers were unsure about the health of the spacecraft, designed and operated by Houston-based Intuitive Machines, company officials declared it had landed successfully and was communicating with Earth. About two hours after the landing, the company confirmed that “after troubleshooting communications” the spacecraft was indeed standing upright, a momentous feat for the growing commercial space industry.

“What we can confirm without a doubt, is our equipment is on the surface of the moon,” Tim Crain, Intuitive Machines’ chief technology officer, said shortly after the landing. “And we are transmitting. So congratulations.”
