Nikki Haley pledges to keep fighting after projected loss in South Carolina primary

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD)- Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley isn’t ready to end her presidential campaign despite projections that she’ll lose another primary to former President Donald Trump — this time in her home state.
“I said earlier this week that no matter what happens in South Carolina, I would continue to run for President,” Haley told a crowd gathered in downtown Charleston for her campaign watch party. “I’m a woman of my word. I’m not giving up this fight when a majority of Americans disapprove of both Donald Trump and Joe Biden.”
In any other campaign cycle, a home state loss might be detrimental to a campaign. In 2016, Sen. Marco Rubio dropped out shortly after losing Florida in a blowout to Trump, after his campaign argued the political winds would shift in his favor once the campaign moved to his home state.
Trump has now swept every contest that counted for Republican delegates, with wins already in Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The former president’s latest victory will likely increase pressure on Haley, who was Trump’s former representative to the U.N. and South Carolina governor from 2011 to 2017, to leave the race.
But, Haley has pledged to stay in the race through Super Tuesday, and she already has several events on her post-South Carolina travel schedule. She’s expected to travel to Michigan on Sunday ahead of the state’s Feb. 27 primary.
“I’m grateful that today is not the end of our story,” Haley said. “South Carolina has spoken. We’re the fourth state to do so. In the next ten days, another 21 states and territories will speak. They have the right to a real choice, not a Soviet-style election with only one candidate. And I have a duty to give them that choice.”
With nearly 25% of counties reporting as of 9 p.m. Saturday, Haley has won 39.2% of the vote in South Carolina while Trump has earned 60.2% of the vote, according to results from the South Carolina Election Commission.
Haley congratulated Trump on his victory but pointed to her performance as proof that Republican voters want an alternative.
“I’m an accountant. I know 40% is not 50%. But I also know 40% is not some tiny group,” Haley said. “There are huge numbers of voters in our Republican primaries who are saying they want an alternative.”
Trump took the stage in Columbia, S.C. minutes after the race was called for him, calling his victory “an even bigger win than anticipated.”
“I have never seen the Republican party so unified as it is right now,” he said. “Our country is going to be respected again. respected like never before. So this is a fantastic evening.”
Trump did not mention Haley in his remarks.
