The Role of the Divine Nine in Georgia Tech's Black ECE Community
The recent groundbreaking of The Divine Nine Plaza in April 2023 stands as a tangible symbol of Georgia Tech's commitment to acknowledging and honoring the contributions of historically Black fraternities and sororities. This plaza is not merely a physical space but a testament to the rich heritage, resilience, and unity embodied by these organizations.
“Beyond academics, I have formed lifetime bonds with my sorority sisters who gave me a support system when it came to dealing with the stressors of college and everyday life,” said Selene Jordan, a member of the Nu Beta Chapter of AKA and 2023 electrical engineer graduate.
The School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the Georgia Institute of Technology is one of the largest producers of electrical engineers and computer engineers in the world. From every day to the hard to imagine, ECE is at the core of almost all technology. Our diverse graduates are among the most highly sought after by industry and by top graduate schools, medical schools, and law schools. From computer chips and satellites to medical devices and renewable energy technologies, electrical and computer engineering makes our modern life possible.
The Georgia Tech School of Electrical and Computer Engineering celebrates our incredible Black students, faculty, alumni and staff for their invaluable contributions. Diversity at ECE and engineering at large is not another checklist item, but it is crucial and necessary to ensure technologies developed are inclusive and beneficial to everyone.
“I've realized thatyou can't succeed at Georgia Tech alone,” said Lindsay Lubin, member of the Nu Beta Chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority (AKA), Incorporated and ECE master’s student. “It was important for me to join the AKA because my role models, mom, and my older sister are members.”

The head of Australia’s main intelligence agency on Wednesday revealed the existence of an “A-Team” of foreign spies that for several years has recruited Australian academics, politicians and businesspeople, gaining access to sensitive political, economic and defence information.
In an extremely rare public revelation of counterespionage operations, Mike Burgess, Australia’s director-general of security, revealed the existence of the unit, belonging to an unnamed country, in a bid to disrupt ongoing operations. “Right now there is a particular team in a particular foreign intelligence service with a particular focus on Australia — we are its priority target,” Burgess said in a speech in Canberra.
“We call them ‘the A-team’ –- the Australia team.” “The spies pose as consultants, head-hunters, local government officials, academics and think tank researchers, claiming to be from fictional companies such as Data 31,” he said.
“On just one professional networking site, there are 14,000 Australians publicly boasting about having a security clearance or working in the intelligence community. Some even out themselves as intelligence officers,” he said.
Australia is a member of the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing group that includes the United States, Britain, Canada and New Zealand — making it a juicy target for operatives from countries such as China and Russia.
But Burgess said he also wanted to let the other country know that its spies had been rumbled, and that the unit’s team leader had been confronted by Australia’s own spies.
“We want the A-team to know its cover is blown. We want the A-team’s bosses to know its cover is blown,” he said.
“If the team leader failed to report our conversation to his spymasters, he will now have to explain why he didn’t, along with how ASIO knows so much about his team’s operations and identities.”
