Oprah Winfrey to leave board of WeightWatchers

Oprah Winfrey is to leave the board of WeightWatchers, in a fresh blow to a company struggling to compete against the popularity of weight-loss drugs.

The US celebrity, who has been on the firm's board since 2015, said she would not stand for re-election at its next shareholder meeting in May.

Ms Winfrey recently revealed that she used weight-loss drugs as a "maintenance tool."

Shares in WeightWatchers International fell by 27% in extended New York trade.

Ms Winfrey said in a statement that she would continue to work with WeightWatchers "in elevating the conversation around recognizing obesity as a chronic condition."

The influential talk show host and businesswoman also said she will donate all her shares in the firm to the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Ms Winfrey is one of the biggest shareholders in WeightWatchers with a stake of around 10% .

Her decision to leave the board comes as the company contends with a major shift in the weight-loss industry after the launch of anti-obesity drugs like Wegovy and Ozempic.

Also on Tuesday, WeightWatchers published its latest financial figures, which showed a net loss of $88.1m (ÂŁ69.6m) for the last three months of 2023, more than twice as much as the same period the previous year.

In March 2023, the company announced it would buy digital health company Sequence "as a natural step" given "the advancements in chronic weight management medications."

Sequence describes itself as a weight loss programme, which offers a suite of services to its subscribers. As well as advice from fitness coaches and dietitians, it is also able to prescribe drugs such as Ozempic and Wegovy.

WeightWatchers boss Sima Sistani said the $132m deal would allow members to benefit from both its approach to "nutrition and behaviour-change" as well as prescription medications.

A MUST READ

“I’ve debated about posting this for almost a day now….

I’ve intentionally refrained from posting education related posts because I’m in the middle of this controversy as a pre-med student, and as a mother and friend who has witnessed the other side. I also know that many people will not understand my views or my position due to its multi-faceted complexity.

But, knowing a family who lost their son to Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis (ADEM) 46 days post Gardasil, I couldn’t let this go.

Being in pre-med classes and having access to the science, data, and in-depth instruction has taught me so much about the human body. What I’m finding already is that there is a HUGE lag between up to date science and current medical practices. My professor told me that it takes about 40 years for medical practices to catch up with the science.

And, that’s on top of another doctor/professor telling me that 50% of what I will learn in medical school will be outdated and wrong by the time I graduate.

Which leads me to this image below. When I found this paragraph in my textbook, it broke my heart in ways I can’t explain.

They’ve known for 37 years. THIRTY-SEVEN years.

But, Merck still claims they are “safe and effective” for everyone. Guys, that’s not how medicine works.

That’s how businesses work.

That’s how marketing works.

That’s not medicine.

We are all different genetically, biochemically, neurologically, etc. One size does not fit all, and parents should be informed of ALL of the true risks.

This information and picture was not a Google search. It’s not from a mommy blog. This is a TEXTBOOK designed for medical students and medical personnel.

Btw, this textbook was published in 2015 and has 77 contributors including PhD’s/experts in Clinical and Experimental Medicine, Autoimmunity, Rheumatology , Allergology, Disease Research, Biomedical Science, Neurology, Internal Medicine, Epidemiological Research, etc.

I don’t have all the answers. I admit that I have a lot to learn. But, I’m willing to take the journey to learn with an open mind and an open heart.

I hope that you will, too." 💙”
