Really gaining an appreciation for the theory that there have been multiple failed technologically advanced civilizations in the past, watching some of the most powerful people alive fight over control while the technologies employed wreck untold havoc throughout the globe. Not to dig on them, it's honestly understandable why such a situation would arise at the end of the age, but seeing it all happen in reality instead of just vague notions of memories is quite something.

So, in the Gnostic telling of the end times it speaks of a trial where humanity will be sorted into seven segments depending on where they truly belong. They suggest this will be determined as individuals display their true nature through their knowledge and their actions.
Not endorsing this theory, but I've felt that it's a perspective which has provided me useful insight into why different people are experiencing things so differently throughout this.

It's not even a matter of effort. It's simply a phenomena which naturally occurs within a population. There appear to be a certain number of basic personality archetypes which serve as focal points around which the general population will naturally orient themselves. Those with great knowledge of these patterns have the opportunity to guide humanity with deliberate intention, yet they can not actually change the dynamics themselves, Over time, a nepotistic ruling class will forget the fundamental purpose for which the systems they have inherited were designed, and become enamoured entirely with their own ability to manipulate the population. As they attempt to abuse the control they are granted in accordance with their positions, they move ever further out of alignment with those basic fundamental patterns upon which their technologies have been built, and the world begins to break apart in a very predictable order. Because even these events were foreseen and accounted for, safeguards have been established to meet with and confront these corruptions.
