Donald Trump criticizes Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan in interview

"With just one day left until the Republican primary election in Texas, former President Donald Trump is continuing to hammer House Speaker Dade Phelan for leading the impeachment against Attorney General Ken Paxton and killing election integrity legislation.

In an interview with Chris Salcedo on Monday, Trump said voters “have to get rid” of Phelan and other “pro-Democrat Republicans.”

“You have an Attorney General who is very good and he went out and impeached him,” said Trump. “And as a Republican I said, ‘don’t you have some Democrats you could worry about?’ because you have a great attorney general, one of the best in the country. And they went all out to impeach him and really hurt him. And that was led by Phelan.”

While Trump said he had not seen polling on the race, he added, “hopefully, the people are going to be smart and vote him out.”

“He killed voter security legislation that nobody could believe. I said, ‘Who is that guy?’”

Phelan has been criticized during his campaign for helping Democrats lower the penalty for illegal voting from a felony to a misdemeanor. He also refused to move legislation forward that would restore the power of the attorney general to prosecute election fraud cases.

In January, Trump endorsed David Covey, who is one of the candidates challenging Phelan in his district. He has also endorsed a slate of candidates—many of them challengers to incumbent House Republicans that he has portrayed as RINOs (Republicans in Name Only) in the past several weeks."
