Houthis move to tighten grip on Red Sea shipping

Sam Chambers March 5, 2024

Emboldened by their first ship sinking the Houthis are now insisting any ships entering their territorial waters need to obtain a permit.

Ships will have to obtain a permit from Yemen’s Houthi-controlled Maritime Affairs Authority before entering Yemeni waters, Houthi telecommunications minister Misfer Al-Numair claimed yesterday. Yemeni waters extend halfway across the Bab al-Mandab strait, one of shipping’s most important chokepoints.

A potential environmental catastrophe is unfolding in nearby waters after the sinking over the weekend of the Rubymar (pictured), a bulk carrier carrying 21,000 tons of fertiliser and spewing bunker fuel having been hit by Houthi missiles on February 18. The Lebanese-owned, Greek-managed, Belize-registered ship is the first constructive total loss in the ongoing Red Sea shipping crisis that has seen a huge swathe of the global merchant fleet give the region a wide berth. Latest data from Clarksons Research, for instance, shows Suez Canal transits last week were 60% below the 2023 daily average.

With an Italian destroyer taking out a Houthi drone over the weekend, the Yemeni militia warned Italian ships would become targets, and they delivered on that promise yesterday, firing two missiles at the 25-year-old MSC Sky II, a 2,169 teu ship owned and operated by the Genoese founder of Mediterranean Shipping Co, Gianluigi Aponte.

The ship’s master reported two explosions. The first exploded a distance from the vessel’s port quarter, while a second struck and damaged the ship with the crew quickly into firefighting mode.

“Operations are escalating and continuing in the Red and Arab Seas, the Gulf of Aden, and Bab al-Mandab, until the aggression stops and the siege on the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip is lifted,” read a statement from the Houthi militia yesterday.

More than 60 ships have been targeted by the Houthis in the five months since war broke out between Israel and Hamas.

Despite the huge rerouting of much of the global merchant fleet around the continent of Africa to avoid the dangerous waters in the Middle East, supply chains now appear to be in sync with the extra sailing times.

New data from S&P Global shows that with the exception of the UK, delays linked to the Red Sea closures are by no means widespread, with supply chains effectively healing around the challenge with alternative routings.

Sen. Rick Scott and Colleagues Urge Biden Administration to Support Vaccine Efforts for Puerto Rico

April 22, 2021

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Senator Rick Scott, Senator Marco Rubio, Representative Jenniffer González-Colón and Representative Mario Diaz-Balart sent a letter to Acting FEMA Administrator Bob Fenton urging him to support COVID-19 vaccination efforts for Puerto Rico by working with the government of Puerto Rico to establish a federally supported mass vaccination site, or propose and implement alternative measures to support vaccine uptake, on the island.

April 22, 2021

Mr. Bob Fenton

Senior Official Performing the Duties of Administrator

Federal Emergency Management Agency

500 C Street, Southwest

Washington, D.C. 20472

Dear Mr. Fenton,

As you continue to work with state and local governments to administer the COVID-19 vaccine directly to Americans through federally supported sites across the country, we urge you to immediately begin working with the government of Puerto Rico to establish a federally supported mass vaccination site, or expeditiously propose and implement alternative measures to support vaccine uptake, on the island.

There are currently four federally supported mass vaccination sites in Florida, located in major population hubs, that are each capable of administering up to 3,000 shots a day. Approximately half a million vaccine doses have come from these four sites and they are clearly popular among Floridians. Nationally, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) mass vaccination sites have administered 3.4 million vaccines.

While meaningful progress in fighting COVID-19 is being made, Americans must regain the confidence to travel to every part of our country freely. This includes Puerto Rico. Countless Americans have family members on the island they are desperate to reconnect with and Americans living in Puerto Rico are likewise eager to be at ease traveling to and from the Continental U.S. It is the job of the federal government, in concert with the government of Puerto Rico, to focus on distributing vaccines as widely as possible to support the health of residents and ensure a robust economic recovery. We will not be successful in this goal until every American who wants a vaccine can get one.

Throughout the pandemic, we have urged all levels of government to work together in a transparent, accountable manner, prioritizing a consistent flow of accurate, timely information. We must continue to put the needs of our communities above all else. That includes the health and safety of our citizens as well as their ability to have a good job and support their families.

Puerto Rico, and the Puerto Rican community in the Continental U.S., deserve fair treatment and consideration during the country’s vaccination efforts. We look forward to your response to this urgent matter and working together to support Puerto Rican families as they, and all Americans, fight to end the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sincerely,

Rick Scott

United States Senator

Marco Rubio

United States Senator

Jenniffer González-Colón

Member of Congress

Mario Diaz-Balart

Member of Congress

Watchdog calls on US to ban candy cancer chemicals as UK begins SEIZING Mountain Dew, Jolly Rancher, Swedish Fish and Lemonhead amid crackdown on American junk food that is linked to infertility and health issues

Food standards officials said the foods didn't meet the UK's 'high food standards'

Additives were in products linked to cancer, tumors and hyperactivity

READ MORE: Now Pennsylvania considers outlawing California food additives

By Luke Andrews Health Reporter For Dailymail.Com

A US watchdog has told DailyMail.com that the seizure of American candies in the UK should be a wake-up call for Americans about what's in their food.

On Monday, footage from the UK showed workers stuffing American candy and sodas - which are found in virtually every US store — into trash bags as regulators get tough on US imports.

Candies like Jolly Rancher, Swedish Fish and Lemonhead contain several additives that are legal in the US but banned under EU and UK law due to their links to cancer, infertility and other problems.

The watchdog Consumer Reports said the video should trigger a shift in food policy in the US and urged officials here to 'do more' to protect adults and children.

They called for the list of food additives banned in the US to be expanded — to include more food dyes and chemicals outlawed in Europe years ago.

The Food and Drugs Administration has been under increasing pressure to tighten its regulations on food additives in recent months.

California outlawed four food additives — brominated vegetable oil, potassium bromate, propyl paraben, and red dye no.3 — in October amid concerns over their links to cancer and other health problems.

New York and Pennsylvania are now also looking to follow suit, DailyMail.com exclusively revealed.

Brian Ronholm, director of food policy at Consumer Reports, said: 'The chemical additives that are to be banned under the California law are certainly a good start for addressing this issue in the US.

'However, as this import action in the UK highlights, more needs to be done.

'The list of chemical additives to target and scrutinize should be expanded to include synthetic food dyes and other chemicals that have been linked to cancer and other adverse health conditions.'

He added: 'What is ultimately needed in the US is for the FDA to modernize and strengthen its regulatory process for food additives.'

The UK and European Union outlawed many of these additives decades ago.

Representatives in California say that everyone in America deserves to be 'as well protected' as people in Europe.

Dr Carolyn Williams, a dietician based in Alabama, told DailyMail.com that she hoped the images would 'motivate' US regulators to take action.

'We should be moving the way that Europe is moving, the way that California is moving,' she said. 'That would be a great first step for the country.'

'We are way overdue in the US to adopt some of the EU's food policies.'

The mother-of-two added: 'I wish [additive bans] would trick over into the US.

'I saw very early in one of my children the effects of food additives.

'There is a blue dye, a blue coloring, and I noticed when he ate this particular blue dye — it is in some cakes and in some candy — his hyperactivity went through the roof.'

In the UK, at least nine popular US products are now being seized by officials because of the ingredients they contain.

Among them are Twizzlers and Lemonhead, which contain mineral oil — a substance derived from petroleum that studies suggest raise the risk of cancer.

Dubble Bubble is being removed because it contains BHT, or butylated hydroxytoluene, which studies show can promote tumor growth and impair blood clotting.

UK officials were also cracking down on Mountain Dew because it contains calcium disodium EDTA, which is linked to cancer.

And Sunny D and Mirinda were seized because they contain potassium sorbate, a food preservative that raises the risk of allergic reaction.
