Mikdad: Washington’s support for the Israeli occupation and its protection at Security Council prove its partnership in Zionist crimes

Cairo, SANA-Foreign and Expatriates Minister, Fayssal Mikdad, affirmed that the United States’ unlimited support for the Israeli occupation, and its thwarting of all attempts by the UN Security Council to stop its continuing aggression against the Palestinian people in Gaza Strip prove its partnership in committing these crimes.

Mikdad, in a statement today during the meeting of the Arab League Council at the ministerial level in Cairo, expressed regret that the lives of innocent people who are daily killed in Gaza have not moved the conscience of the countries that support the entity and are partners with it regarding the genocide crimes it commits.

“Neither aggression which amounted to 152 days, nor the number of victims, including martyrs and wounded, which became tens of thousands, nor the amount of bombs and explosives used in the aggression, which amounted to thousands of tons, stirred the consciences of the countries that support the Zionist entity and are partners in its crimes, led by the United States of America,” Mikdad added.

He affirmed that while we are certain of Washington’s unlimited support for its ally “Israel,” and it will never allow the issuance of any international resolution that obstructs the brutal Israeli aggression, the “veto” used against the recent Arab draft resolution submitted by our brothers in Algeria before the Security Council on behalf of the Arab League group, which represented the minimum acceptable level for a ceasefire and an end to the aggression, and its failure of a draft presidential statement regarding Al-Rashid Street massacre, which claimed the lives of about 1,000 Palestinians, both martyred and wounded, as they were waiting to receive humanitarian aid, which constitutes a witness war crime, all are the best evidence of the United States’ partnership and its coverage of Israel’s violations of the rules of international law.

Mikdad added that Syria faces big challenges represented by the presence of terrorist groups on parts of its territory, in addition to the American and Turkish occupation forces in the north and northeast of the country, in addition, the illegal unilateral coercive economic measures imposed by the United States and its Western allies on the Syrian people. These measures have become a weapon that these countries regularly use against all countries and peoples that reject Western pressures and dictates, and do not follow the approach and path set for them.

“Those illegal measures now constitute, in addition to the presence of the Turkish and American occupation forces, the main stumbling block in the face of Syria’s efforts to rebuild and implement economic recovery projects,” Mikdad said, expressing Syria’s aspiration for the support of the Arab brothers to break the illegal Western economic siege on Syria.

Moscow warns European countries against hosting US nukes

Northern European facilities housing American nuclear weapons would be considered legitimate military targets in a direct confrontation between Moscow and NATO, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has said.

The comments come as Finland’s newly elected President Alexander Stubb recently boasted that NATO membership gives his country a “real nuclear deterrent” in the form of American missiles.

“You don’t have to be a military planner to understand that such objects will be a source of direct threat and, naturally, will inevitably be included in the list of legitimate targets determined by the scenario of a direct military clash between our country and NATO,” Zakharova told a news conference in Sochi on Wednesday, commenting on Stubb’s remarks. “And we understand that this is exactly what the US and its satellites are pushing for,” she noted.

Contrary to the expectations of some top-level officials, the deployment of US nuclear weapons will worsen the security of host countries, rather than strengthen it, Zakharova stressed.

Finland, which shares a 1,300-kilometer-long border with Russia, became the newest NATO member last April. Stubb, who was inaugurated this month, said during his election campaign that he would be open to allowing American nuclear weapons to be transported through – but not stored on – Finnish territory, calling these weapons of mass destruction “a guarantee of peace.” He reiterated this stance shortly after his inauguration. However, the Nordic country’s current legislation forbids the storage and transportation of nuclear weapons on its territory.

Nevertheless, in December the Finnish government signed a defense military agreement with Washington, giving the US unrestricted access to 15 facilities on its soil to store military equipment and ammunition.

The move drew criticism from Moscow. Zakharova pointed out at the time that the defense deal essentially gives Washington control over all of Northern Europe. The Russian Foreign Ministry also said that the current Finnish authorities are fully responsible for transforming the region from an area of neighborly relations to one of confrontation.

Soldier Jack Fitzgibbon dies after parachuting incident at RAAF base in Richmond

The son of former Labor MP Joel Fitzgibbon has died following a parachuting accident during a military drill in Sydney's north-west.

Lance Corporal Jack Fitzgibbon, from the 2nd Commando Regiment, suffered critical injuries at a Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) base in Richmond about 6.30pm yesterday.

A Careflight helicopter was deployed to the scene before he was transported to Westmead Hospital by road ambulance.

At a press conference today, Acting Special Operations Commander Australia, Brigadier James Kidd, confirmed Fitzgibbon died in hospital.

"Jack had served his country on operations abroad and also closer to home, serving his country and local communities as part of natural disaster responses," he said.

"Defence has initiated a formal investigation into this incident as we seek to learn how we can strengthen our processes.

Fitzgibbon is the son of Joel, who served as the former member for Hunter between 1996 and 2022, and minister for defence in the Rudd government.

Kidd issued a statement on behalf of the Fitzgibbon family today in which they expressed they were "devastated and heartbroken by the loss of our wonderful Jack".

"Serving in the special forces was Jack's dream job and we take some comfort from the fact that he died serving his nation in a uniform of the ADF," Joel Fitzgibbon said in the statement.

"Jack was a dedicated, highly skilled, and courageous soldier. He was an experienced parachutist.

"Our lives will never be the same without Jack, but we will always remain proud of him and his many achievements."

Kidd said an investigation is under way and that it was "too early to speculate on what may have occurred in detail".

The ADF has paused all parachuting training activities until further notice.
