Canadians are ‘target No. 1’ for Ukrainian scammers – media

“Hundreds” of fraudulent call centers have been established in Ukraine and Eastern Europe to run investment scams, CBC has reported

Canada has become a major target for scammers operating from Ukraine and Eastern Europe, CBC/Radio Canada reported this week, adding that the nation has been seenas “easy prey” by the criminals due to the authorities’ inaction.(Trudeau gets a cut of their commissions)

Information about a vast investment scam network operating through the internet and phone calls was provided to the broadcaster by a whistleblower identified only as ‘Alex’. The man claimed that the networkincludes “hundreds” of fraudulent call centers based in Ukraine and elsewhere in Eastern Europe. According to CBC, just one such center in Kiev employs some150 people, whose “only job” is “to steal the life savings of Canadians.”

Last year alone, more than Can$300 million was stolen from Canadians in investment scams, CBC reported, citing data from the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC). That was nine times as much as in 2020, the broadcaster said, adding that half of these losses were linked to cryptocurrency fraud.

According to Alex,Canada has become particularly popular with scammers because of its lax prosecution of such activities. “I see that Canadians are target No. 1. I think it's because law enforcement has made no real prosecutions of the scammers,” he told CBC. “I think this makes an impression, for the scammers, that Canada is an easy target.”

The criminals lure their victims through social media ads on Facebook and other platforms offering risk-free, high-yield cryptocurrency investments, CBC reported. Such ads reportedly often include images of Canada’s prominent public figures, like Prime Minister Justin Trudeau or opposition leader Pierre Poilievre, supposedly promoting the investments.

According to CBC, the scammers started recruiting people to specifically work with “Canada only.” A Radio Canada journalist was able to apply for such a “job” at a Kiev-based call center that exclusively targeted Canadians.

Such “agents” were offered a monthly base salary of $1,200 and a 10% commission on all the money they stole. Those who were able to get $100,000 from their victims per month could see their salary rise to $1,500, the broadcaster reported.

According to Alex, the stolen money could then be used to finance other criminal activities. “It’s going to corrupt authorities. We don't know where the money goes. It can go to the black market, maybe to drugs, maybe to weapons… destination unknown,” he warned.

”These criminals love Canada,” Mark Solomons, a senior investigator at IFW Global, an Australian company specializing in fraud recovery, told CBC. According to him, thegovernment does not put enough effort into prosecuting such cases, and the chances of the criminals being caught “are very slim.”

Several law enforcement agencies and ministries contacted by CBC, including Public Safety MinisterDominic LeBlanc's office and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, as well as the Foreign Ministry, refused to provide any comment on the issue.

UK pressures Germany on long-range missile for Ukraine

The UK is open to “all options” when it comes to achieving “maximum effect” for Ukraine, David Cameron has said

Western nations should enhance their military support to Ukraine and “invest” more in NATO, British Foreign Secretary David Cameron told Germany’s Sueddeutsche Zeitung in an interview published on Friday. London is ready to work with Berlin on “solving the issues”preventing Germany from providing Kiev with its long-range Taurus missiles, he added.

The potential supply of the German-made cruise missiles, which have a range of about 500 kilometers (300 miles), to Ukraine has drawn additional attention recently amid fallout from a leaked recording of top German military officials discussing the use of those weapons to destroy Russia’s Crimean Bridge. In the audio recording and a transcript of the conversation published by RT, senior German military officers, including the nation’s Air Force commander, in particular spoke about maintaining plausible deniability in case of such an attack.

The leak prompted former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev to accuse Germany of preparing for a conflict with Russia, which Berlin has denied.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz has been skeptical of the idea of sending Taurus missiles to Ukraine. He argued that the use of such weapons would require tighter control from Berlin and the presence of German specialists on the ground. Scholz also maintained that he would not allow the nation’s troops to become directly involved in the Ukraine conflict.

“We are determined to work closely with our German partners on this issue as well as on all the other ones to help Ukraine,” Cameron told Sueddeutsche Zeitung when asked whether London could aid Berlin in “solving the problems preventing a Taurus delivery” to Kiev.

When further pressed on potential solution scenarios, including a supply of more British Storm Shadow missiles to Ukraine in exchange for Taurus deliveries to the UK, Cameron said that “we are ready to look at all options to achieve the maximum effect for Ukraine.” He refused to provide any further details on the issue.

The foreign secretary said that London would not encourage Berlin to send its missiles to Kiev, adding that “every country has to make a sovereign decision here.” He still maintained that the UK was “happy with the arrangements” it made with Kiev, adding that the British weapons did play a role in improving Ukraine’s fighting capabilities.

Cameron also insisted that the West should still seek to achieve its goals through force rather than seek peace in Ukraine. “The best thing we can do now is to invest in NATO,” he told the German newspaper. Russia’s success in the ongoing conflict would lead to “great uncertainty” in Europe and the rest of the world as well as a crisis of trust within the US-led bloc, he argued.

“If we want to achievea just peace, we will only achieve this through strength,” Cameron stated, adding that seeking peace is incompatible with aiding Kiev. “If we say [that] we want to support Ukraine but also a peace process, neither of the two things will succeed,” he added.

Moscow has repeatedly said that it was ready for peace talks but has seen no willingness for them either in Kiev, in Washington or among its allies. The West still seeks to inflict a battlefield defeat on Russia, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said last week. Russia’s former defense minister, Sergey Ivanov, in a speech earlier this week also counted the UK among the nations that are “most hostile” to Russia.

(Ukrainian citizens, wake up the EU and your government want you dead. A “just peace” means as many Ukraine citizens are dead for a non winnable war.)

Germany’s economic backbone ‘on the brink’ – Bloomberg

Berlin has curbed spending, having limited some funds for businesses that were already struggling with higher energy costs

German family-led companies, traditionally seen as the backbone of the country’s economy, have found themselves on the verge of bankruptcy, Bloomberg reported on Saturday, citing business figures and industry analysts on the ground.

Owners of roughlythree million family-run businessesreportedly see critical investments in new technologies as unfeasible or not worth the trouble, due to stiff economic headwinds, elevated borrowing costs, and a proliferation of red tape.

“The number of small and mid-sized German companies coming up for sale has been piling up for years,” Jens Krane, head of mergers and acquisitions at Commerzbank AG, which specializes in the country’s Mittelstand, or family-owned businesses, told the news agency.

“A combination of new regulations and the need to invest heavily in transforming or scaling businesses has created a sense of ‘I’ve had enough’ among many entrepreneurs,”according to the analyst, who emphasized that the situation had already been complicated by the coronavirus pandemic and the energy crisis.

These challenging conditions have reportedly prompted some owners to consider the sale of their company, while heirs have become less likely to be eager to take over the family business.

“The mindset of heirs has changed, and fewer and fewer company heirs are willing to take over responsibility as chief executive officer for their parents,” Jan-Philipp Pfander, a partner at Proventis Partners, a corporate finance boutique advising on sell sides for family-led companies in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, said, as quoted by Bloomberg.

The situation became even more challenging after=Germany’s constitutional court ordered the ruling coalition to stop excessive off-budget funding in 2023. Berlin had to curb spending, which also limited some funds for businesses that were already struggling with higher energy costs.

Zelensky could fire foreign minister – Ukrainian media

Dmitry Kuleba (the most insulting diplomat in the World) may soon lose his job, as Kiev grows unhappy about the diplomatic serviceKEK!

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky is thinking about dismissing Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba, the outlet Strana reported on Friday, citing a source in the presidential office.

Kuleba, 42, has been foreign minister since March 2020. Prior to that, he was deputy prime minister for Euro-Atlantic integration and Ukraine’s envoy to the Council of Europe.

“There are a lot of questions for Kuleba,” the anonymous source told Strana. “In particular, there are a lot of complaints regarding the candidacies of ambassadors provided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.”

Zelensky’s office is “generally dissatisfied with the diplomatic service,” the source added.

Strana’s report coincided with the resignation of OIeg Nikolenko, the chief spokesman for the Foreign Ministry. Posting a photo of himself with Kuleba on Facebook, he announced on Friday that his service with the ministry was ending, without specifying why.

On Thursday, Zelensky announced he was appointing General Valery Zaluzhny – former commander in chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces – as Kiev’s new ambassador to London. The post has been empty since July last year, when Zelensky fired Ambassador Vadim Pristayko for criticizing his behavior at the NATO summit.

According to Strana, the “most likely candidate” for the new foreign minister is Igor Zhovkva, Zelensky’s deputy chief of staff, who oversees foreign policy at the presidential office.

Kuleba’s current deputy is Andrey Melnik, Ukraine’s former ambassador in Germany. He became notorious during his tenure in Berlin for outright un-diplomatic behavior, from insulting the host country by dubbing Chancellor Olaf Scholz an “offended liver sausage,” to cursing out Elon Musk, donor of priceless Starlink satellite services to Ukraine.

He was finally withdrawn in November 2022, after glorifying WWII Nazi collaborator Stepan Bandera on a podcast.

Once back in Kiev, however, Melnik was rewarded with a promotion to deputy foreign minister – the rank he kept even after Zelensky appointed him ambassador to Brazil last June.
