Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault has defended the price tag of $10,000 per kill in Parks Canada’s eradication of fallow deer on BC’s Sydney Island, saying Canadian hunters aren’t skilled enough to do the job safely or effectively.
Documents from an order paper question reveal Guilbeault stating that Parks Canada has spent just under $800,000 in 2023 in its eradication project, where non-native fallow deer from Europe have trampled the local ecosystem on the island that’s home to just 50 residents.
To date, the eradication team contracted out by Parks Canada to Coastal Conservation has killed 84 deer, meaning that the 2023 cost per deer has been roughly $10,000 per.
Moreover, while $800,000 was spent in 2023, Parks Canada gave a $5.4 million contract to Coastal Conservation to complete the project between 2022 – 2025.
The Climate Change Minister stated that there are somewhere between 300 – 900 deer remaining on the island.
Cost per deer scrutinized
The cost per killed deer became known in December of last year. Critics questioned why the government wouldn’t just contract out Canadian hunters for the job, some of whom expressed shock at how much the feds were spending.

A Chinese-American scientist who subpoenaed former CBS reporter Catherine Herridge in a lawsuit against the FBI asked the court to expedite an appeal so Herridge can face contempt fines of $800 a day as soon as possible.
Earlier this month, Catherine Herridge, an Emmy-winning and nominated reporter known for her work on national security and intelligence, was held in civil contempt by an Obama-appointed federal judge for her refusal to unmask her confidential sources related to a blockbuster story on how there is an infiltration from China in US universities.
In August, US District Court for the District of Columbia, Christopher Cooper, ordered Herridge to sit down for a sworn deposition regarding a confidential source she used for a 2017 story she covered on a Department of Defense-funded school that was at the center of federal investigations over Chinese military ties while she was at Fox News.
The judge ordered Herridge to turn over her source(s) in response to a lawsuit that was filed by Chinese-American scientist Yanping Chen against the FBI. Chen subpoenaed Herridge in an effort to find out who her sources were.
Herridge argued she should not be forced to disclose her source because of her First Amendment rights.
Judge Cooper, an Obama appointee, disagreed and forced Herridge to unmask her source. Continue…

Julian Assange’s U.S. defense attorney, Barry Pollack, responded to the report by saying that as far as his office has seen, there is no indication that the government is easing up on its determination to seek his extradition.

A bill to implement Canada’s updated free trade agreement with Ukraine passed the Senate on Wednesday, without the support of a single Conservative senator.
Similarly, it previously passed through the House of Commons without a single vote from a Conservative MP.
“In order for this trade deal to be implemented, Ukraine must agree to promote a carbon tax. That is not something we can support,” said Conservative House Leader Andrew Sheer following its ascent from the House.
“Should Ukrainians ever decide to make a different choice, it would be in violation of a trade deal,” said Scheer.

Canada’s largest public sector union is rejecting claims before the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal that it has promoted and engaged in antisemitism.
CUPE Ontario and the CUPE 3906 local chapter were slapped with a human rights complaint from several of its Jewish members claiming antisemitism at the hands of the labour union, exemplified by the union’s policies and statements after the October 7 terrorist attack.
CUPE’s statement of defence argues that the human rights complaint is unfounded and that the complainants are mistaken in believing that statements and actions the union has taken were antisemitic or discriminatory.
CUPE is standing by a statement one of its chapters had made on Oct. 7, 2023, the day of Hamas’ terrorist attack killing 1,100 Israeli civilians, in which the union praised Palestinian resistance.
The original complaint to the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal noted that CUPE local 3906 had posted “Palestine is rising, long live the resistance” on X shortly after news of Hamas’ massacre had begun circulating.

Frank Baylis, head of Baylis Medical Company, was elected to represent the riding of Pierrefonds—Dollard for the Liberals in the 2015 federal election.
The $3.7 million "preventive maintenance" contract was awarded in 2023 to Baylis Medical Company for the 10,000 ventilators it was sole-sourced to build in 2020 as part of an initial $237 million deal.
The preventive maintenance contract on the unused vents was uncovered in a ministerial inquiry posed by Edmonton Conservative MP Ziad Aboultaif.
According to the Department of Public Works, the federal government spent $720 million on rush orders for 40,456 ventilators it mostly never used. During the COVID pandemic, the feds deployed just 500 of the ventilators nationwide.
A few of those ventilators, despite concerns over the viability, were sent to Ukraine as part of Canadian war relief efforts.
Frank Baylis, head of Baylis Medical Company, was elected to represent the riding of Pierrefonds—Dollard for the Liberals in the 2015 federal election. However, Baylis did not run for reelection in 2019.
The Baylis Medical Company Inc., owned by former Quebec Liberal MP Frank Baylis, was awarded a $423,000 contract just two months after he left his position as MP. According to Blacklock's, who first reported the double dipping:
"Baylis Medical on September 14, 2017 applied for industry department research funding. Baylis was then a Liberal member of the industry committee. The company’s $422,946 contract was approved [on December 19, 2019."

Shell, a major oil and gas supplier in Canada whose federal government has openly called for the end of fossil fuels, announced that it will not meet its planned 2035 emissions targets.
Wael Sawan, the Anglo-Dutch company’s Canadian CEO, noted in Shell’s latest “energy transition strategy” update that “We believe the world will continue to need oil and gas for many years.”
The company had set a target to reduce its so-called “net carbon intensity” to 20 percent by 2030 but revised the goal to 15 percent.
Shell said that “cutting oil and gas production,” the objective of the Canadian government, “is not healthy” for the global energy system.
Shell’s report mentions that its 2035 target has been “retired” due to “uncertainty in the pace of change in the energy transition.”
The company still says it has a net-zero target by 2050, but this is not set in stone because “if society is not net-zero in 2050,” then there would be a “significant risk that Shell may not meet this target.” Continue..

Despite typically being seen as a bastion of socialism in Canada, polls show that BC is quickly becoming one of the most Conservative provinces.
In fact, if the federal election was held today, the Conservatives would absolutely dominate every other party.
According to a recent poll from Mainstreet Research, 1 in 2 voters (49.6%) have indicated their intent to vote for Pierre Poilievre and the federal Conservative Party of Canada, more than the Liberals (22.8%) and NDP combined (19.4%).
And it’s not just a single pollster predicting this result. Most, if not all, of them are.
According to 338Canada’s most recent aggregate polling (published on March 17), 43% of BC residents (up 6 points) currently intend to vote Conservative compared to 25% signalling favour for the NDP (up 5 points) and a paltry 22% signalling favour for the Liberals (down 4 points).
