Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has launched an investigation into Spirit AeroSystems, a major supplier to Boeing, after reoccurring issues with certain airplane parts.

As part of the investigation, Paxton requested information about the company’s diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) practices.

In his request for documents, Paxton ordered Spirit to “produce all meeting minutes of Spirit’s Global Diversity & Inclusion Council(s). Meeting minutes is defined to include any document that memorializes the agenda or discussion of any meetings held by these groups.”

Spirit was also told to “Produce Documents sufficient to identify Spirit’s employee demographics for race, national origin, sexual orientation, and age before Your DEI Policy was enacted.”

Attorney General Paxton said in a statement, “The potential risks associated with certain airplane models are deeply concerning and potentially life-threatening to Texans.”

Immediate action is needed to "prevent widespread death and total collapse of livelihoods and avert a catastrophic hunger crisis in Sudan," a United Nations-backed global authority on food security warned, Reuters reported on Friday.

The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) had been due to issue an update to its December analysis that found nearly 5 million were on the verge of catastrophic hunger. However, it was unable to do so due to the war. Instead, the IPC said it reviewed the latest evidence available and published the alert on Friday "to express major concern" about the deteriorating situation and to push for immediate action "to prevent famine."

The UN Security Council this month called for an immediate cessation of hostilities. The US warned on Thursday that it would push the council to take action to get aid to starving people in Sudan, possibly by authorizing cross-border deliveries from Chad.

The IPC estimated that nearly five million people were acutely malnourished, of whom 3.6 million are children under the age of five and 1.2 million are pregnant or with baby women.

Canada’s Niagara region has proactively declared a state of emergency ahead of a rare total solar eclipse on April 8 that is expected to gather massive crowds to areas in and around the region’s popular waterfalls.

The Niagara region said in a statement on Thursday that Regional Chair Jim Bradley had declared a state of emergency “out of an abundance of caution.”

“Declaring a state of emergency … strengthens the tools the region has at its disposal to safeguard the health and safety of residents and visitors and protect our critical infrastructure in any scenario that might arise,” a Niagara region press release said.

33,622 top-earning Ontario public servants joined the “Sunshine List” last year

Over 30,000 people have joined Ontario’s annual sunshine list detailing public sector employees with salaries over $100,000

Top earners included those in healthcare, municipal governments and post-secondary institutions.

Topping the list is Ken Hartwick, president and CEO of Ontario Power Generation, with an annual salary surpassing $1.9 million.

The top five earners are all executives from OPG.

As for the presidents and CEOs of the Hospital for Sick Children and University Health Network, Ronald Cohn and Kevin Smith – each earned salaries in the mid-$800,000 range.

This year, the sunshine list expanded to feature 300,570 names, marking a significant increase from last year when it was 266,948.

Meanwhile, Metrolinx CEO Phil Verster made $838,097 in 2023. Ontario Pension Board president and CEO Mark Fuller pulled in $826,539.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford had the same salary as last year, when it was reported to be $208,974.

However, Ford’s chief of staff, Patrick Sackville, wound up with $324,000.

Ontari’s leader of the opposition, NDP Leader Marit Stiles, claimed a salary of $174,950.

Ontario Chief Medical Officer Dr. Kieran Moore reported substantial earnings, to the tone of $464,148.

The Ontario government has faced questions on whether it plans on raising the earning threshold required by public servants to be included in the list, citing inflation.

The Sunshine List was introduced in 1996. An income of $100,000 for that year would be more than $180,000 in 2024 if inflation were included in the calculation. However, government house leader Paul Calandra shut down the idea.

“I think that it’s an important document that serves the people well in highlighting the salaries of public employees,” said Calandra.

Other high earners included Toronto’s city manager ($417,216), the Chief of Peel Region police ($423,050), and Toronto Transit Commission CEO Rick Leary ($562,325).
