DeSantis Mobilizes Florida State Guard to Ward Off Expected Wave of Haitian Migrants

By Kristinn Taylor Mar. 14, 2024 7:30 am

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) is mobilizing State Guard other elements of the government to ward off an expected wave of Haitian migrants as the Caribbean nation descends further into chaos.

DeSantis posted to X Twitter on Wednesday about his move to protect Florida, “For quite some time, the State of Florida has been dedicating significant resources to combat illegal vessels coming to Florida from countries such as Haiti. Given the circumstances in Haiti, I have directed the Division of Emergency Management, the Florida State Guard, and state law enforcement agencies to deploy over 250 additional officers and soldiers and over a dozen air and sea craft to the southern coast of Florida to protect our state. No state has done more to supplement the (under-resourced) U.S. Coast Guard’s interdiction efforts; we cannot have illegal aliens coming to Florida.”

Statement issued Wednesday by the governor’s office:

Governor DeSantis Deploys Additional Personnel, Assets to Southern Florida and the Keys to Stop Potential Influx of Illegal Immigration from Haiti

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.—In anticipation of a potential influx of illegal immigrants from Haiti, Governor Ron DeSantis has ordered additional state assets to the Keys and southern waters of the State of Florida.

“For quite some time, the State of Florida has been dedicating significant resources to combat illegal vessels coming to Florida from countries such as Haiti,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “Given the circumstances in Haiti, I have directed the Division of Emergency Management, the Florida State Guard, and state law enforcement agencies to deploy over 250 additional officers and soldiers and over a dozen air and sea craft to the southern coast of Florida to protect our state. No state has done more to supplement the (under-resourced) U.S. Coast Guard’s interdiction efforts; we cannot have illegal aliens coming to Florida.”

Currently, state agencies have security and surveillance assets in South Florida and the Keys as a part of Operation Vigilant Sentry to stop illegal immigration at sea. The governor’s directive today will send additional personnel and assets from the following agencies:

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement: 39 additional officers.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission: 23 additional officers with eight additional seacraft.

The Florida National Guard: 48 additional Guardsmen with four additional helicopters.

The Florida Highway Patrol: 30 additional officers with an additional aircraft and drones for surveillance.

Governor DeSantis will also today authorize a deployment of the Florida State Guard to the Keys to assist in the operation. This deployment includes up to 133 soldiers.

Illegal immigrants feel empowered to enter the sovereign territory of the United States because of the federal government’s refusal to diligently enforce our immigration laws and protect the integrity of the border. When a state faces the possibility of invasion, it has the right and duty to defend its territory and people. Under Governor Ron DeSantis, Florida will act.

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) reiterated his call for the Biden administration to position the Navy to interdict the expected wave of Haitian migrants, “I don’t want southeast Florida to become Haiti. I am calling on Joe Biden to do the right thing and declare an anticipated state of mass migration over water. That way we could get naval vessels in the Florida straits to deter the thousands of incoming Haitians before they invade the United States.”

The Billionaire Oligarch Who’s Enabling Haiti’s Murderous Gangs

Businessman Gilbert Bigio is facing penalties for his alleged involvement with the violence that’s engulfed the country during Prime Minister Ariel Henry’s corrupt reign.

James North, December 16, 2022

Demonstrators carry a coffin covered with American, Canadian, and French flags and pictures of politicians as they protest the corrupt and violent regime of Prime Minister Ariel Henry.

In a stunning new development amid the smoldering crisis in Haiti, Canada has imposed stiff economic sanctions on Gilbert Bigio, who is often described as the richest man in Haiti. The Canadian foreign ministry accused Bigio, along with two other superwealthy Haitians, of using their economic power “to protect and enable the illegal activities of the armed criminal gangs” that are tearing the country apart. For years, Haitians have said Bigio and other oligarchs are complicit in the violence strangling the nation: This year 1,448 people have been killed, with another 1,005 kidnapped for ransom. Until now, however, the international community has stayed mostly silent about Haiti’s corrupt elite.

Canada’s bold move should end the mistaken view in the outside world that the gang violence, which has brought 60 percent of the capital, Port-au-Prince, to a virtual standstill, is nothing but savagery contained in poor neighborhoods. As one local online publication—the respected AyiboPost—explained, the Bigio family’s broad economic holdings include its own recently constructed private port of Lafito, just north of the capital. AyiboPost speculates that Canada may have information indicating that the gangs have been able to use the port to import some of the heavy weapons that are outgunning the beleaguered Haitian police.

The Bigio family is part of what is often called the “Syro-Lebanese elite”—the descendants of people who immigrated in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries from various parts of the Middle East. There are estimates that Gilbert Bigio, the 86-year-old patriarch, is worth $1 billion, although no one knows for sure. It is a matter of public record that in 2020 he bought a Mercedes Maybach luxury auto for $132,000, quite a statement in a nation where an estimated 4.7 million people—nearly half the population—are experiencing “acute food insecurity.”

That many outside of Haiti are ignorant about these influential oligarchs is actually something of a surprise. Back in the early 1990s, after most of the wealthy supported the overthrow of the democratically elected President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, foreign diplomats, including a U.S. ambassador, called them “morally repugnant elites,” or MREs for short. The appellation was inspired by the emergency rations known as “meals ready-to-eat.”

Daniel Foote, the former U.S envoy to Haiti who resigned in September 2021 to protest against the disastrous American policy, told me that he thinks Canada and the U.S. State Department are working together to economically punish Bigio and the others. But he suspects that the United States cannot follow Canada’s example by imposing stiff sanctions, possibly because Bigio may be a U.S. citizen and thus entitled to due process. In theory, however, U.S. prosecutors could bring cases against Bigio and other oligarchs for funding the vicious gangs whether these defendants have U.S. citizenship or not. As things stand, inaction is much more likely.

Why do some members of Haiti’s elite pay and even arm the gangs? There are several explanations. In conversations with well-placed Haitians who understandably asked for anonymity, several theories emerged. All agreed that the gangs today are largely paramilitary allies of the PHTK, the political party that has dominated Haiti for the past decade with a combination of election fraud and violence. These oligarchs have a vested interest in maintaining this alliance. A large-shop owner explained that Haiti’s elite profits from monopolizing certain strategic imports—the Bigios control steel—and so they cooperate with the ruling party to maintain that economic power.

All my anonymous informants agreed that Haiti’s rich evade their taxes, especially import duties. What’s more, Canada directly accused Gilbert Bigio and the two others of “money-laundering and other acts of corruption.” And one former government official told me that way back in the 1950s, the Bigios had imported Uzi submachine guns from Israel for the François “Papa Doc“ Duvalier dictatorship; the weapons trade may thus have already been a component of the family business model.

UK Agrees to Trade Deal With Texas as Biden Continues to Reject Post-Brexit National Agreement

Britain agreed to a trade deal with Texas as the UK government continues its strategy of inking agreements with individual American states as the Biden Administration remains unwilling to sign a national post-Brexit trade deal, a position that can at times give the impression of being a punishment for the British people ignoring President Obama’s instruction to vote for Europe in 2016.

Downing Street announced on Wednesday that it has agreed to a Statement of Mutual Cooperation trade pact with Texas, the second-largest economy in the United States with a GDP of £1.9 trillion ($2.4 tn) in 2022, which if counted as a single country would be the eighth largest economy in the world, beating out Italy and just trailing behind France.

With the Biden White House shutting down any hopes of a post-Brexit trade deal between the two allies, the UK has taken to doing deals with individual states in America. The agreement with the Lone Star state marks the eighth such deal but by far the largest agreement to date.

LONDON, ENGLAND – MARCH 13: Kemi Badenoch, the UK Business and Trade Secretary (R) and Texas Governor, Greg Abbott (L) sign a trade pact to boost trade and investment ties between the UK and Texas, in Downing Street on March 13, 2024 in London, England. Number 10 said that the UK is already the eighth-largest international goods export market for Texas, with trade in goods hitting £14.7 billion in 2023.

The British government said that the agreement with Texas will seek to make it “quicker, easier, and cheaper for UK and Texas firms to do business” together by reducing trade barriers and increasing investment.

The agreement will specifically seek to increase cooperation in “areas of opportunity and future growth, such as aerospace, advanced technologies, supply chains and critical minerals, infrastructure, transport services, and chemicals.”

The relationship between the United Kingdom and Texas stretches back to even before the state was annexed and incorporated into the Union. A physical representation of this relationship remains in central London, with the building which housed the Texas Legation diplomatic mission to the British Empire from the Republic of Texas between 1836 and 1845 still standing today — marked with a plaque — in Pickering Place near St James’s Palace.

General Milley Cashes in as Senior Bank Adviser, Joins Same Lucrative Speakers’ Agency as Hillary Clinton

Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Army Gen. Mark Milley is reportedly soon to rake in millions after leaving the position under a cloud of criticism for dragging the military into politics, trying to usurp power from then-President Donald Trump, and granting partisan interviews to journalists and book authors while still in uniform.

According to a recent report by the Intercept, (https://theintercept.com/2024/03/11/general-mark-milley-paid-speeches) since retiring from the military in 2023, Milley has become a senior adviser to JPMorgan Chase bank, joined the faculties of Princeton and Georgetown, and “embraced the lucrative paid speaking circuit.” In fact, Milley has joined the same high-powered speakers’ agency as Hillary Clinton, who has notoriously cashed in on her own time in government service.

“From military pay of $204,000 a year, Milley is sure to skyrocket to compensation in the millions,” the Intercept’s Ken Klippenstein writes.

Milley has already started delivering paid speeches for his new speakers’ firm Harry Walker Agency. According to the report, the firm’s website showed that he recently participated in a Q&A at a gathering of 160 CEOs organized by global investment bank Moelis & Company, to provide an “insider’s perspective on world affairs.”
