33 dead in Canada?

As the heat wave that has left at least three dozen people dead in Canada, the northeast US and Kansas recedes, heat is building in the western US and is likely to add to wildfire concerns.

Over 90 million people were under some sort of heat watch, warning or advisory, including in the Northeast, the Mississippi and Ohio Valleys and the Southwest.

There have been 33 heat-related deaths in Quebec in the past several days, according to Marie-Claude Lacasse with the Ministry of Health, Quebec. Eighteen of those deaths were in Montreal, authorities said Thursday. ( c n n)

33 Dead

23 missing

12 boys in a cave

Divers scoured the wreckage Friday of a tour boat that sank in a storm off Thailand's southern resort island of Phuket, as the death toll rose to 33, all of them Chinese nationals.

The chief of the Phuket Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation office said Friday evening that the search for an additional 23 people has been called off until morning.

He said the search will resume at 5 a.m. Saturday.

Some of the bodies were found by divers who entered the wreck Friday and others were floating in the water, said navy official Narong Aurabhakdi.

The boat was carrying 105 people, including 93 tourists, 11 crew and one tour guide when it toppled in 16-foot waves Thursday evening. At least 12 of the injured were hospitalized.

Another boat also overturned off Phuket during the stormy conditions Thursday afternoon, but all 42 on board were rescued.

The accidents came as rescuers, also led by Thai navy divers, struggle to extract 12 boys and their soccer coach from a flooded cave in the country's far north, where they've been trapped since June 23.

Jin Yilin, consul-general of the Chinese Embassy in Thailand, said a delegation from the Chinese Foreign Ministry is on the way to Thailand.

Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha, the leader of Thailand's military government, expressed his “sympathies and deepest condolences” to the families of the dead.

The government will “exert all efforts to find those still missing and provide support to all survivors of this tragic event,” he said in a statement…

LAKE PLACID, Fla. — Officials say that norovirus is what caused 33 children to fall ill at a summer camp in Lake Placid.

Norovirus is highly contagious and can spread rapidly in closed environments like summer camp.

“Our epidemiology team has notified health departments in the home counties of all campers, and appropriate follow-up will be done,” said Mary Kay Burns, Highlands County Health Officer. “Camp officials have already started the process of disinfecting the camp, and re-inspection will be done once cleaning has been completed. We will also provide information on proper hand-washing and food preparation techniques, to help avoid further incidents.”

BASTAR, CHHATTISGARH: 33 children are among the 70 people who have been rescued from being trafficked in Chhattisgarh's Bastar district. The people who had been sold to factories and brick kilns, were being transported in a bus when police intercepted the vehicle following a tip-off from anti-trafficking campaigners in Bastar on Wednesday.

"We have rescued 20 minor boys and 13 girls. Rest of them are adults and were sold as bonded labourers," Bastar child protection officer Vijay Shankar Sharma told news agency Agence-France Presse.

They were sold for thousands of rupees each to factory owners in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Mr Sharma said.
