They're not idols…Up until recently (a 150 years or so) most people did not/could not read. Pictures/Statues etc were used to communicate ideas/concepts to those who could not read….Up until the late 1500's no one but priests and the nobility even had a Bible……
The paintings/statues were the memes of the old world
Some people did and do worship statues…and rocks, and other crazy crap….
These however, were not created to be worshiped, but to reinforce teachings/instructions and to remind people of the Son of Man.
