What is a "turnip toff"?
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (Prince William and Kate Middleton) have a group of friends who are also wealthy, and who also have high status (I’m still betting the Duke and Duchess lead, probably in both of those), who all own farm land in the north-east of England. That social group is known as the Turnip Toffs.
Toff is just British slang for a wealthy person from the upper class, so that explains half the name. When I first heard what they are called, I tried to find any concrete reason why the veggie used was a turnip. I read a bunch of different things, and nothing could state “Here is the specific reason,” so I suspect it’s a combination of factors.
I think it likely it’s “turnip” for at least some of these reasons.
The alliteration sounds better than it would if it were “cucumber toffs.”
Turnips are a really humble vegetable, often associated with the poor. Turnips were a major staple food in England before potatoes were imported there from the New World for the same purpose. They were used both for humans and to feed animals, which is often the mark of a food that is not only inexpensive, but easy to grow. They show up frequently in history books as one of the few foods with any nutritive content at all that really poor people had access to, and there are many, many accounts of soups made mainly of turnips and whatever else people could scrounge being a primary part of the diets of the poor.
Turnips are still grown in large numbers. The couples in the Turnip Toffs social group all own good, rich farm land. It doesn’t mean they grow anything on it, but they do still own farming land, and that’s where turnips come from, so some sort of vegetable was appropriate to go into their name.
So, all a Turnip Toff is is a wealthy, upper class English person who has some equally wealthy, upper class friends, including a man who happens to be the second-in-line heir to the British throne and his wife.
