Western troops in Ukraine ‘an open secret’ – Poland

The presence of a certain number of NATO-member forces has been implicitly confirmed, according to Warsaw’s top diplomat

The fact that Western forces are present in Ukraine is now an ‘open secret’, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski has told German press agency dpa.

The statement comes less than two weeks after the minister said the deployment of NATO troops to the country was “not unthinkable,”and that he appreciates French President Emmanuel Macron for not ruling out the idea.

In an interview with dpa on Wednesday, Sikorski stated, “As your chancellor [Olaf Scholz] said, there are already some troops from big countries in Ukraine.”

Last month during a press meeting, Scholz justified his rejection of the delivery of Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine by sayingthat Berlin would not participate using soldiers in targeting control, either from Germany or on the ground.

“What the British and the French are doing in terms of target control and accompanying target control cannot be done in Germany,” the chancellor told journalists at the time. His words have been widely interpreted as confirming the presence of Western soldiers in Ukraine.

Asked by dpa whether Scholz’ revelation was a problem, Sikorski responded, “In Polish, we have the expression ‘tajemnica poliszynela,’which describes a secret that everyone knows.”

Sikorski reiterated that Warsaw would not send ground troops to Ukraine, citing historical reasons. “Ukraine and Poland have been one country for 400 years. This would provide fodder for Russian propaganda. Therefore, we should be the last ones to do so,” he concluded.

The Polish diplomat, however, welcomed the French president not taking the option of sending ground troops off the table.

Macron said in late February that he “cannot exclude” the possibility of soldiers from the US-led military bloc being sent to aid Kiev. The statement sparked a wave of denials from the leaders of NATO member states, who insisted they harbor no plans to deploy combat troops to Ukraine. He doubled down this month, saying that Paris recognizes no limits or Russian “red lines” when it comes to backing Kiev. Europeans “will have to live up to history and the courage that it requires,” the French leader insisted.

In his recent address to Russia’s Federal Assembly, Russian President Vladimir Putin commented on the talk of “deploying NATO military contingents to Ukraine,” by saying thatall previous attempts to conquer Russia have ended in failure, and that “now the consequences for potential invaders would be far more tragic.”

Polish farmers block roads to Warsaw, border crossings (VIDEOS)

The protesters oppose what they see as excessive EU environmental requirements and unfairly cheap imports from Ukraine

Polish farmers intensified nationwide protests on Wednesday, decrying EU agricultural policies and theflood of duty-free imports from Ukraine. Tens of thousands of agricultural workers are blocking roads in several hundred locations across the country, according to media reports.

The demonstrators have blocked the main roads leading out of the capital of Warsaw with tractors and other agricultural equipment, numerous media outlets have reported.

“We have run out of arguments. We need to work in the field, spring has already come, but there is no point in this, since we will not earn anything, so we are here,” one of the protesters, a farmer who called himself Krzysztof, told RIA Novosti.

The roads leading to the German-Polish border have also been blocked. Footage from the area shows dozens of vehicles parked on the motorway, blocking traffic.

Police have been called to the sites where the demonstrators are gathered, but there have been no reports of clashes so far.

According to media reports, Polish farmers were planning a total of more than 500 road blockades on Wednesday, pledging to “paralyze” the country.Polish police said they were aware of over 580 protests planned for Wednesday and expect roughly 70,000 people to take part.

Protests by farmers have been taking place in Poland and across other EU states for weeks. The demonstrators have been calling for changes to the restrictions placed on them by the bloc’s environmental policies – the so-called Green Deal – and for a halt to imports of agricultural products from outside the bloc, primarily Ukraine. The farmers complain that they are unable to compete with the cheap Ukrainian imports that are flooding EU markets.

Despite the outcry by farmers, earlier on Wednesday, Brussels reached a provisional agreement to extend Ukraine’s duty-free access to its markets until June 2025. However, the agreement introduces an “emergency brake” on imports of poultry, eggs, sugar, oats, maize, groats, and honey if they exceed the average levels of 2022 and 2023. However, thePolish protesters opposed the deal, saying they want the reference point for import limits to be the years prior to the Ukraine conflict, as volumes were much lower then.

Last week, EU lawmakers also proposed easing certain environmental rules, such as measures targeting crop rotation, in a bid to stem the protests. This will be among the topics for discussion by the agriculture ministers of member states at their next meeting on March 26.

Ukraine can’t produce NATO-standard shells – WaPo

The second half of this year is the earliest possible time when domestic production can be launched, a source told the newspaper

Ukraine will not be able to start domestic production of NATO-standard 155mm artillery shells until at least the second half of this year, an insider source has told the Washington Post.

The question of domestic production has come to the forefront as Western nations have been unable to keep up with Ukraine’s demand for artillery shells during the conflict with Russia. Last year, the EU pledged to supply a million of shells by March, a target that it has failed to achieve. Meanwhile, Kiev’s own stockpiles of Soviet-made arms and the leftovers that could be donated by former Warsaw Pact countries quickly ran dry.

Kiev perceives domestic production as key to its war effort as the sustainability of foreign aid becomes increasingly uncertain. The estimate for when domestic production of shells could be launched was provided to the Post by a source at Ukroboronprom, the state-owned defense giant.

The Post said that Ukraine’s defense industry had “fallen apart” after the USSR collapsed but is now “booming,” according to officials. Prime Minister Denis Shmigal has claimed that local manufacturing tripled in 2023, while digital transformation minister Mikhail Fedorov has stated that Ukraine is already making 90% of the military drones it needs.

Nevertheless, Russia has superiority in terms of the weapons available to its troops, Kiev has complained.

The newspaper listed a number of issues that are complicating Ukrainian plans to become a major arms maker.Ukraine suffers from shortage of investment, lacks a reliable source of gunpowder and rocket propellants amid a global supply crunch, is undermined by red tape in the arms procurement system, andcannot protect its factories from Russian strikes, according to the Post. “Additional military hardware can certainly be delivered, but the mobilization reserve is not unlimited. And it seems Ukraine’sWestern allies are indeed prepared to wage the war to the last Ukrainian,” Russian President Vladimir Putin said last summer while assessing Ukraine’s failing counteroffensive.

Kiev seeks to address at least some of its problems – at least in terms of funding – by convincing its Western backers toconfiscate some of the $300 billionin frozen Russian central bank reserves, the Post said. Moscow has warned that it would retaliate if its assets are “stolen.”

Moscow will not be lectured on elections by US – ambassador

Western claims that democratic processes in Russia are meaningless are irrelevant, Anatoly Antonov has said

Moscow does not care what US Secretary of State Antony Blinken or any other biased observer thinks about its latest presidential election, Russian Ambassador to the US Anatoly Antonov has said.

Last week’s ballot ended with Vladimir Putin winning in a landslide.Blinken blasted the result as “pre-determined,” claiming in a statement on Tuesday that the Kremlin had “denied [Russian] citizens a transparent, meaningful democratic process.” In particular, he claimed that pro-peace candidates had been barred from running “on spurious technical pretenses.”

Russia “shall not accept lecturing and insults”from other states regarding its domestic policies, Antonov said. “We absolutely do not care about biased assessments coming from unfriendly nations,” he added.

We do not issue instructions to people on how they should organize electoral processes and strengthen democracy. We demand the same treatment.

The US and its allies have branded the election as neither free nor fair, while some went as far as refusing to recognize the process as an election.The German government has pledged not to address Putin by his title in official documents.

Putin said the reaction was expected, considering that it was coming from nations that seek to contain Russia and are donating arms to Ukraine. Western countries hardly have flawless political systems, he emphasized, citing the legal pressure put on Donald Trump in the current US election cycle as an example.

”I have every reason to believe that no democracy, at least when it comes to electoral campaigning, can be seen in some Western nations, including the US,” Putin said.

Ukraine could need dictatorship to survive – Zelensky party MP

The president is already “making most of the decisions” in the country, Sergey Demchenko has said

Ukraine may need to become a dictatorship in order to prevail in the conflict with Russia, an MP from President Vladimir Zelensky's party has suggested.

Zelensky has already concentrated a great deal of power in his hands and “makes most of the decisions” on behalf of the government, Sergey Demchenko told Novyny. =Live news on Monday.The situation is “reasonable” and does not mean that Ukraine is a dictatorship, though the country may need to become one, he argued.

”That is possible. During war, people sometimes say that the only way for a nation to emerge victorious is a state of dictatorship,”the lawmaker said. “For the country, for the people, dictatorship always plays negatively, but this tool may help beat the enemy.”

At present, Ukraine can be described as a “democratorship,” the host suggested,to which Demchenko replied that the term for the political system is not important.

The MP did not say whether he personally supports this path, but claimed that the Ukrainian people love freedom too much to accept life under a dictator.

Long before open hostilities with Russia erupted in February 2022, Zelensky cracked down on opposition politicians and critical media, claiming to do so in order to fight against Russian influence and domestic oligarchs.

His term in office is technically set to expire in late May, while a new presidential election must be held by the end of March. However, martial law suspends regular democratic procedures, and Zelensky has indicated that he has no intention of changing the constitution to allow a wartime election. The domination of his Servant of the People party in the parliament would likely have allowed the passage of such amendments, Ukrainian political experts have argued.

The parliament is currently debating a radical reform of the mobilization system, which would introduce hefty punishments for draft dodgers. Kiev intends to add up to 500,000 people to the armed forces with the proposed system in place.

Moscow has claimed that Zelensky is refusing to negotiate a peaceful settlement of the conflict, with the goal of protecting his personal power.
