Russia Launches Fresh Drone and Missile Strikes on Ukrainian Power Facilities Causing Widespread Outages

Russia attacked electrical power facilities in much of Ukraine, including the country’s largest hydroelectric plant, causing widespread outages and killing at least three people, officials said Friday.

Energy Minister German Galushchenko said the nighttime drone and rocket attacks were “the largest attack on the Ukrainian energy sector in recent times. The goal is not just to damage, but to try again, like last year, to cause a large-scale disruption of the country´s energy system.”

The attacks caused a fire at the Dnipro Hydroelectric Station, which supplies electricity to the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, Europe’s largest nuclear power installation.

The main 750-kilovolt power line to the plant was cut off, International Atomic Energy Agency head Rafael Grossi said early Friday. A lower-power backup line was working, he said.

The plant is occupied by Russian troops, and fighting around the plant has been a constant concern because of the potential for a nuclear accident.

The dam at the hydroelectric station was not in danger of breaching, the country’s hydroelectric authority said. A dam breach could not only disrupt supplies to the nuclear plant but would potentially cause severe flooding similar to what occurred last year when a major dam at Kakhovka further down the Dnieper collapsed.

One person was killed and at least eight injured in the Russian attack, said Zaporizhzhia regional governor Ivan Fedorov.

Attacks on energy facilities in the Kharkiv region caused blackouts, and other attacks were reported in areas of western Ukraine far from the front lines. Two people died in the Khmelnytskyi region, according to the Internal Affairs Ministry.

“The world sees the targets of Russian terrorists as clearly as possible: power plants and energy supply lines, a hydroelectric dam, ordinary residential buildings, even a trolleybus. Russia is fighting against the ordinary life of people,” President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Friday on the Telegram messaging app.

Russian officials said Friday that one person died and at least three were injured in Ukrainian shelling of areas near the border.

The governor of the Belgorod region, Vyacheslav Gladkov, said a woman was killed when a shell hit nearby while she was walking her dogs and that two others were injured. The town of Tetkino in the Kursk region was shelled, injuring one person, said Gov. Roman Starovoit.

Both regions have been subject to shelling and drone attacks in recent weeks and officials have said that attempts by Ukrainian fighters to cross into Russian territory have been repelled.

Israel Bombed Over 400 Healthcare Facilities, Killing Nearly 700

Israeli strikes have hit over 400 healthcare facilities in Gaza, killing nearly 700 people. Most of the medical infrastructure in the Strip is damaged and inoperable.

The World Health Organization released statistics on the impact on medical facilities in Gaza during the first five months of the Israeli onslaught. The WHO recorded 410 attacks, resulting in 685 deaths and 900 injuries.

Nearly every hospital in Gaza has taken some damage. Twenty-four of the Strip’s 36 hospitals are not functioning. A panel of doctors speaking to the UN on Tuesday explained the Palestinian medical staff have had to reestablish several hospitals following Israeli raids or strikes.

Additionally, 60 out of 74 primary healthcare centers are nonfunctional. Israel has also targeted ambulances, with 50 vehicles damaged. Paramedics are not the only first responders targeted by Israeli forces. Several members of Gaza’s police force have been killed. Prior to the attacks on officers, the police force escorted aid throughout the Strip.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus explained on Thursday that Israel had to allow more aid into Gaza through land crossings to prevent famine. “The future of an entire generation is in serious peril,” he stated.

“Recent efforts to deliver food by air and sea are welcome, but only the expansion of land crossings will enable large-scale deliveries to prevent famine,” Tedros said. “Once again, we ask Israel to open more crossings and accelerate the entry and delivery of water, food, medical supplies, and other humanitarian aid into and within Gaza.”

However, several physicians recently in Gaza said aid could not be distributed in the Strip without a ceasefire. Tedros lamented that the WHO had faced that reality this week when an aid convoy planned for a Hospital in Gaza City was canceled. “A planned mission to Al Shifa today had to be canceled due to lack of security … Once again, we call for health care to be protected and not militarized,” he said.

Israel appropriates 1,976 acres of land in Jordan Valley, declaring it state land

Israel on Friday declared the appropriation of some 8,000 dunams, or 1,976 acres, of land in the Jordan Valley and declared it state land, meaning it can now be used for development projects.

The declaration of the land as Israeli-owned will allow for the construction of hundreds of settlement housing units, as well as an area designated for industry and commerce.

Activists called the move the largest action of its kind in decades.

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who also serves as a minister in the Defense Ministry, oversaw the move. He said the declaration of the land as state-owned was “an important and strategic issue.

“While there are those in Israel and the world who seek to undermine our right to Judea and Samaria and the country in general, we promote the settlement movement with hard work and in a strategic manner across the country,” he added, using the biblical name for the West Bank.

Israeli settlement watchdog Peace Now said the size of the seized area is the largest since 1993’s Oslo Accords, and that “2024 marks a peak in the extent of declarations of state land.”

The move came nearly three weeks after the Defense Ministry body that authorizes settlement construction advanced plans for 3,426 new Israeli homes to be built beyond the Green Line.

Settlements Minister Orit Strock said at the time that after a months-long lull in West Bank construction approvals, the Civil Administration’s High Planning Subcommittee had advanced projects to build 2,402 new homes in Ma’ale Adumim, 694 homes in Efrat and 330 homes in Keidar.

Global Population Set To Fall For First Time In 700 Years

A major study published in scientific journal The Lancet has found that the global population will start to fall within decades due to vastly reduced fertility rates and may never recover.

The study, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, found that by the year 2050, 155 of 204 countries are on course to have birth rates lower than required to sustain the population level.

It notes that as of 2021, the “total fertility rate” worldwide was 2.23, hovering only just above the 2.1 children per woman needed to maintain population growth.

That figure has fallen from 4.84 in 1950, with researchers predicting it will decrease to 1.83 in 2050 and go as low as 1.59 by 2100.

Circumstances of the incident

• A group of unidentified gunmen armed with assault rifles went on a shooting spree in the lobby and then inside the concert hall just before a concert by the rock band Picnic, eyewitnesses told TASS. According to them, there are dead and injured people.

• Musicians of the band Picnic were not harmed during the shooting, its director Yury Chernyshevsky told TASS.

• An explosion occurred in the building starting a fire. The Emergencies Ministry’s department for the Moscow Region said that about one third of the Crocus City Hall building was engulfed in fire, with thick black smoke rising.

• The building’s rooftop is almost entirely engulfed in fire and has partially collapsed. The smell of smoke has spread to nearby neighborhoods.

• A TASS correspondent reported that there are still people inside the building, some can be seen in the windows.

Rescue efforts

• Special law enforcement agencies are taking all necessary measures following the incident, the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) Public Relations Center said.

• The SOBR and OMON special police units of the Russian National Guard have been dispatched to the Crocus City Hall. As TASS reported, they have already arrived at the scene.

• More than 30 regional ambulance crews and more than 20 Moscow ambulance crews have been sent to the Crocus City Hall, the Moscow Region’s health ministry said.

• Firefighters have evacuated about 100 people from the basement of the burning building, and are now rescuing people from the rooftop.

Response from authorities

• Moscow Region Governor Andrey Vorobyov said that he was on his way to the scene. A crisis center has been set up, he added.

• Myakinino subway station, which is next to the concert hall, is operating as usual, Moscow’s transport department said.

• Traffic on the Moscow Ring Road in front of the Crocus City Hall is restricted along both lanes, the transport department wrote on its Telegram channel.

• Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said that he had ordered that help be provided to all victims of the tragedy.

In the not so distant past, French leaders had a fiercely assimilationist attitude toward immigration. This was especially true for the first big waves of Muslims from former French colonies. The most recent wave of migrants from the Arab world couldn’t care less about French society, and they openly state as much.

According to a 2020 poll by the Institut français d'opinion publique, almost half of French Muslims said their religion supersedes the laws and values of France. And among Muslims under 25, three quarters(!) agreed with the sentiment.

Given the continually declining birthrate among French women, it’s possible that within only thirty to forty years, France will become a majority Muslim country.

But despite this stats-based reality (and the Muslim community declaring that they have no intention on continuing French traditions and values), French and European politicians across the Davos Man-captured modern political spectrum are quick to dismiss any discussion of this issue as nonsensical and/or racist.

Of course, this is not just a French issue, it is a whole of Western Europe issue. For a society to flourish (both from an economic and a cultural perspective), the population replacement rate should be comfortably over 2.1 children per woman. As you can see in the graphic below, women in Europe are not having nearly enough children. The same is true in America, where the fertility rate in 2023 was 1.78 births per woman.
