Witnesses describe deadly shooting at Russian concert venue

Crocus City Hall came under attack by unknown assailants late on Friday

Multiple videos have been posted on social media by panicked visitors to a popular shopping center andmusic venue outside of Moscowthat was attacked by terrorists on Friday.

At least 40 people were killed when a group of gunmen stormed the Crocus City Hall on Friday evening, according to the authorities. The assailants reportedly set the building on fire, while witnesses also said they heard explosions inside the mall.

Shooting is heard in one video recorded by a girl in a panic as the attack was getting underway. The fate of the people shown in the video is unknown.

“They set fire to the hall, they set fire to the hall! They are shooting from assault rifles!”could be heard on another video just moments after the shooting started.

The man on the recording claims the attackers burst into the concert hall and immediately opened fire on the first rows filled with people. Those inside tried to hide and escape, but the attackers were already blocking the corridors of the building.

Another distressed girl is seen recounting that when the shooting started, she saw people running, followed by the attackers. “I ran into the bathroom, a stampede started there. It was just horrible,” she says crying. “It was very scary there; in fact, nothing was visible inside because of the smoke…”

In addition to at least 40 people killed, more than 100 were injured in the attack, according to Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB).

The attackers struck a part of the venue situated at one end of the sprawling complex just before a concert by the rock band Picnic, which was scheduled to take place shortly.

The popular music venue outside Moscow was set on fire after gunmen entered it and began shooting at visitors

Multiple fire brigades and aircraft have been deployed to put out a blaze at a large concert hall outside Moscow that was attacked by terrorists on Friday night. The popular shopping center and music venue is located in Krasnogorsk, just northwest of the Russian capital.

A group of gunmen stormed the Crocus City Hall on Friday night, killing at least 40 people, according to the authorities.

The assailants reportedly set the building on fire. Witnesses also said they heard explosions inside the venue.

According to regional emergency services, around 100 people have been evacuated from the underground floor. The rescuers are working to evacuate people from the roof.

More than 320 firefighters are on site, officials said. Three helicopters are dropping water on the blaze.

Opened in 2009, Crocus City Hall is a bustling shopping and entertainment hub, which hosts many high-end stores and a music venue. The rock band Picnic was set to perform there on Friday night, so the building was packed with fans at the time of the attack.

At least 40 people have been killed and more than 100 injured in a “terrorist attack” at the Crocus City Hall shopping mall and concert complex, northwest of Moscow, Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) reported on Friday.

According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, about 100 people have been escorted to safety by firefighters.

“Fire and rescue units are operating … Their main efforts are aimed at search and rescue. Firefighters evacuated about 100 people from the basement of the building. Work is underway to rescue others from the roof using lifts,” the ministry’s message says.

According to local media, up to 6,200 people could have been in the building when the shooting started as the scheduled concert was sold out.

People built makeshift barricades and tried to break out through the windows to escape the shooting scene, eyewitnesses have told the press. The death toll is expected to grow, given the scale of the attack and inferno that has engulfed the mall.

The deadly attack on a large concert hall outside Moscow on Friday night was an act of terrorism, Russia’s Investigative Committee has said.

According to videos posted to social media, a group of heavily armed gunmen broke into the popular Crocus City Hallon Friday night and began indiscriminately shooting visitors. They then reportedly set the building on fire.

At least 40 people have been killed and more than 100 injured, Russia’s Federal Security Service said in its preliminary assessment.

It is unclear if the terrorists are still in the building. The evacuation of visitors and attempts to put out the blaze are underway.

Crocus City Hall is a major concert venue right outside the Russian capital

The Crocus City Hall complex, where a major terrorist attack took place on Friday night, sits just outside of Moscow’s city limits, in the urban settlement of Krasnogorsk. It opened in October 2009, and was named after Muslim Magomayev (1942-2008), a legendary Soviet singer born in present-day Azerbaijan.

The concert venue is located on the northern end of the Crocus City site, in the same block as a convention hall and the Aquarium Hotel. South of it are the Vegas shopping mall and Crocus City Expo center. The complex also includes a children’s amusement center and a wedding venue.

Crocus City Hall boasts an auditorium with over 13,000 seats, a concert hall with 7,500 seats, and a theater with capacity of around 5,500. It lies on the Moscow Ring Road, 30 minutes from the city center by Metro.

The venuehosted the 2013 Miss Universe pageant – owned at the time by American businessman and future president, Donald Trump– and has hosted numerous concerts by prominent Western performers such as A-ha, Eric Clapton, and Joe Cocker.

The entire complex was built by and named after the Crocus Group, owned by the Azerbaijani-born businessman Aras Agalarov.

US condemns Moscow terrorist attack

There is “no indication” that the attack has any connection to Ukraine, National Security Council spokesman John Kirby has said

The White House has condemned a major terrorist attack outside Moscow which unfolded on Friday evening, as masked gunmen breached a concert hall northwest of the Russian capital, leaving scores dead and injured.

Unofficial reports indicate that at least a dozen people have been killed in the attack at the Crocus City Hall, with around 130 wounded, after the gunmen opened fire at the venue and detonated explosives which set the building ablaze.

Speaking to reporters at a briefing in Washington, National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said the White House sent condolences to the victims of the “terrible”attack, adding that they were trying to gather more information on the incident.

“Our thoughts are with the victims of this terrible shooting attack,” Kirby said. “The images are just horrible and just hard to watch.”

Kirby quickly dismissed any speculation about a potential “connection to Ukraine,” saying there is “no indication” that Ukrainians were involved.(it just happened a couple of hours, why is he stating this. Did they call Ukraine?)

He also addressed questions about a March 7 security alert issued by the US Embassy in Russia, which had warned that “extremists”had plans for an imminent attack in Moscow.

“I don’t think that was related to this specific attack,” Kirby said. (How could he know this?)

According to TASS news agency, up to a third of the Crocus City Hall complex has been engulfed in flames, with unconfirmed reports and videos indicating that helicopters have been dispatched to extinguish the fire. The agency also said that special forces soldiers from the Russian Guard have arrived at the location.
