Justice Department tells House Intelligence, Judiciary Committees it has fulfilled all subpoenas

The Justice Department and FBI complied with all subpoenas from the House Intelligence and Judiciary Committees, a top department official told the panels’ chairmen on Friday.

In a letter to House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., and House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes, R-Calif., Assistant Attorney General Stephen Boyd said that the DOJ and FBI “believe that they have now substantially complied with” the sizable documents requests from the two panels.

“[A]ny residual or ongoing production of the materials will be expeditiously completed in coordination with staff members from the appropriate committees,” wrote Boyd in the letter obtained by the Washington Examiner.

ICE seizes $43M of counterfeit designer goods imported to Laredo, Texas, from China

In mid-June, a large shipment of boxes from China arrived at an international terminal in Laredo. HSI was alerted because the shipping labels on the boxes were made out to addresses that don't exist.

After three days of watching packages being moved and stored, HSI moved in and seized 795 boxes worth of nonbrand goods meant to imitate Apple, Chanel, Coach, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Nike, Sony, and Under Armor products. The June bust was the largest-ever in Laredo, one of Border Patrol's nine sectors on the Southwest border.

“Criminal elements use every and any opportunity to sell substandard and counterfeit goods to the American public,” acting deputy special agent in charge of HSI operations in Laredo, Jesus Adrian Flores, said in a statement.

ICE said the goods likely got into the U.S. by finding a way to "bribe Mexican cartels who often extort Mexican regulatory and law enforcement officials so that the merchandise passes without being inspected or paying import duties."

Class action lawsuits alleges union and Washington state conspired to ripoff caregivers

A class action lawsuit filed against Washington state and the Service Employees International Union seeks damages on behalf of potentially thousands of state-subsidized inhome caregivers, arguing that the state and the union conspired to divert subsidy money from caregivers who had no intention of joining SEIU.

The lawsuit was filed Tuesday and comes in the wake of a Supreme Court's ruling last week in Janus v. American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees that found that compelling public sector workers to join unions was unconstitutional.

Obama holdover drops legal claim to take over Trump's CFPB

Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Deputy Director Leandra English announced Friday that she will drop her legal bid to be named the agency's acting director.

In a statement provided by her lawyer, English thanked the CFPB's career employees and said she would leave the agency, where she has not maintained a presence, in recognition of President Trump's decision to nominate a permanent director.

Since Republicans passed the tax bill in December, New Jersey, Vermont and Washington, D.C., have passed laws enacting an individual mandate, joining Massachusetts, which famously enacted an individual mandate while Mitt Romney was governor in 2006.
