British PM accused of ‘cronyism’ for knighting party donor

Rishi Sunak has announced a surprise round of honors, including Egyptian-born billionaire Mohamed Mansour

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is facing a backlash and accusations of cronyism for his decision to confer a knighthood on one of the Conservative Party’s biggest donors, who has contributed millions of pounds.

Sunak announced his ‘Easter Honours List’ on Thursday, a step many viewed as unusual as it was made outside of the traditional honors rounds, which are granted at New Year’s or the King’s Birthday.

The list, which included a number of Conservative MPs, several figures involved in working on artificial intelligence and Oscar-winning film director Christopher Nolan, also featured Egyptian-born billionaire Mohamed Mansour.

Mansour, who has served as senior treasurer of the Conservative Party since 2022, is a vocal supporter of the prime minister. Last year, he gave £5 million ($6.3 million) to the Conservatives, the single largest donation they had received in over two decades. Mansour’s knighthood was awarded for “business, charity and political service.”

However, the billionaire’s newly-minted title has raised eyebrows among UK political figures, with some accusing Sunak of blatant “cronyism.”

“The nation is sick of the Tories and their obscene cronyism. Bung them a few million quid and a peerage or knighthood is yours. The whole thing stinks like a rotting fish, from the head,” Reform UK leader Richard Tice told The Telegraph.

Labour Party chairman Anneliese Dodds voiced a similar opinion, telling Sky News it showed “a blatant disrespect for the office [that Sunak] should feel privileged to hold,” adding that giving money should not be an “automatic pass” to knighthood.

Conservative peer Lord Robert Haywood also warned that the public would be “unhappy” with Sunak’s move. “The problem is that you’ve got people who are genuine philanthropists who also give money to a political party, and that’s where the line isn’t differentiated,” he said.

The Telegraph noted that the “highly unusual” decision to award honors before the Easter recess will likely fuel speculation that the prime minister may call a summer snap election, with the knighthoods seen as an attempt to boost support for his party.

Russia launches strikes against Ukraine’s energy sector – MOD (VIDEO)

Russia carried out a large-scale attack against the Ukrainian energy sector and its anti-aircraft defenses overnight on Thursday, the Defense Ministry in Moscow announced on Friday. The attack involved multiple weapons including hypersonic air-launched Kinzhal missiles and kamikaze drones.

All objectives were successfully carried out and all designated targets were hit during the strike, the ministry said in its daily briefing. The military did not name the exact location of any of the targets.

According to the Ukrainian military, the country was targeted with a total of 99 projectiles, including some 60 suicide drones and three Kinzhal missiles. Kiev, which has routinely claimed to shoot down incoming projectiles at exceptional rates, said some 84 of the munitions had been shot down. This time, however, it did not claim any Kinzhal kills.

Despite the Ukrainian military’s claims, hits were reported in multiple locations across Ukraine. Hydroelectric and thermal power plants, as well as natural gas storage and transit infrastructure, are believed to have been targeted in the overnight strike.

Unverified footage circulating online purports to show the hydroelectric plant located near the central Ukrainian city of Kremenchug sustaining at least two hits.

The DTEK group, Ukraine’s largest private power generating company, said three facilities it operates had sustained “damage” during the attack.

Separately, the country’s Energy Ministry urged the public and authorities alike to withhold information about the attacks, the facilities targeted, and the extent of the damage they might have sustained.

“Disclosure of such information is a very big threat, since enemy intelligence is actively working with open sources of information. Do not give the enemy valuable information that it will surely use to plan new attacks,” the ministry stated.

Russia first began targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure in the autumn of 2022 in response to the bombing of the Crimean Bridge in October of that year. While Kiev initially denied responsibility, it later admitted its involvement in the attack.

The latest campaign against critical Ukrainian infrastructure was launched earlier this month in the wake of Kiev’s attempts to breach into Russia’s Kursk and Belgorod regions, as well as indiscriminate attacks on settlements along the border, including the city of Belgorod itself.

Unlike the previous campaign, which predominantly targeted switching substations, the new series of strikes appears to have targeted the power generation facilities themselves, several of which sustained critical damage, including Ukraine’s largest hydroelectric plant, the DneproGES.

Germany has altered its citizenship requirements to include a mandatory understanding of the Holocaust, Judaism and Israel, reported Der Spiegel.

The move was initiated by the Interior Minister Nancy Faeser of the Social Democratic Party. She told Der Spiegel:

Antisemitism, racism and other forms of contempt for humanity preclude naturalization … If you don’t share our values, you can’t get a German passport. We have drawn a crystal clear red line here.

The German naturalization process includes 33 questions — 17 of those questions must be answered correctly to pass, according to the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees. The subject matter is listed in the three topics of “Living in a Democracy,” “History and Responsibility,” and “People and Society,” reported The Jerusalem Post.

The Post states that there are three questions about federal land where applicants have registered as having primary residence. Those who have attended German schools or have psychological, mental illness, or other disabilities are not required to take the exam.

The outlet reports that the Interior Ministry revised the test after alleged rhetoric and violence against Jews in Germany, around the time Israel decided to take part in its genocide of the Palestinians. The federal government acted to include an “explicit commitment to Israel’s right to exist before naturalization … [and] other related questions,” said The Post.

Journalists in the White House press corps covering President Joe Biden’s administration habitually steal insignia items from Air Force One, four people told West Wing Playbook.

The looting reportedly grew to such a degree under Biden’s tenure that the president of the White House Correspondents’ Association, NBC correspondent Kelly O’Donnell, issued a “terse reminder” that stealing from Air Force One is not allowed, several individuals who saw the off-the-record email confirmed to Playbook.

None of the members of the press corps reportedly responded to O’Donnell’s email.

When we raised the subject with current and former White House correspondents, stories spilled forth. There’s one about the senator in the front of the plane who — as a chatty aide told reporters — was taking everything not bolted down. Several colleagues of one former White House correspondent for a major newspaper described them hosting a dinner party where all the food was served on gold-rimmed Air Force One plates, evidently taken bit by bit over the course of some time. Reporters recalled coming down the back stairs after returning to Joint Base Andrews in the evening with the sounds of clinking glassware or porcelain plates in their backpacks.

The reported looting has gotten so bad that O’Donnell is being pressured to crack down on the alleged theft, White House officials familiar with the matter told Playbook, noting the crackdown is not meant to “embarrass individual reporters but to send a message that the thefts needed to stop.”

In one reported instance, an email went out asking reporters to return any items “inadvertently” taken “by mistake.” One reporter, who reportedly received the email, allegedly stole an embroidered pillowcase. That person reportedly admitted to the alleged theft and scheduled a time to return the item in Lafayette Square just outside the White House.

In a week, Israeli army executes 13 children in and near Al-Shifa Hospital

Palestinian Territory - In blatant violation of international law, particularly international humanitarian law, the Israeli army has executed 13 children by direct shooting in Al-Shifa Medical Complex and its Gaza City environs. This is a war crime and a crime against humanity, and is part of the genocide that the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip having been experiencing for the past six months.

For over a week now, the Israeli army has been conducting systematic and horrifying military operations inside and around Al-Shifa Medical Complex. These crimes include extrajudicial executions and deliberate killings of Palestinian civilians. The Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor field team has received identical testimonies about the killings and executions of Palestinian children between the ages of four and 16.

Some of the fatal shootings occurred during an Israeli army siege while the victims’ families were inside their homes; others occurred when the victims attempted to escape via routes that the Israeli army had designated as “safe” after forcibly evacuating them from their homes and places of residence.

Palestinian Islam Ali Salouha lives close to Al-Shifa Medical Complex. Salouha stated that Israeli forces killed his sons Ali, nine, and Saeed Muhammad Sheikha, six, in front of their families and fellow locals. They specifically targeted the children, he said, with live bullets.

According to Salouha, the family chose to stay in their apartment with several other residents because there was no safe way for them to leave after more than a week of Israeli forces besieging them inside their home amid frequent raids.

He explained that on the afternoon of Sunday 24 March 2024, the Israeli army ordered everyone in the vicinity, through loudspeakers, to leave their residential area immediately or face having their home bombed. As a result, the residents were forced to leave the area with a number of their neighbours and cross a corpse-strewn road that the Israeli army had designated for travel.

Salouha said that they were only able to walk for 10s of metres before they were suddenly exposed to intense gunfire, which targeted the two children, Ali and Saeed, in particular. The children then fell in front of them, their bodies covered in blood.

As they attempted to pull the two kids off the ground, he said, the Israeli forces opened fire on them again, forcing them to leave Ali and Saeed on the ground and to continue walking.

Salouha emphasised that his son Ali was killed in a field execution crime after he had been deprived of food for days because of the Israeli siege. He also pointed out that the area around Al-Shifa Medical Complex had become a hotspot for field executions and murders, with the bodies of the victims discovered in the streets serving as evidence.

The Israeli army launched a massive military operation on 28 March targeting Al-Shifa Medical Complex, turning it into a military barracks and transforming the surrounding area into a military zone, amid non-stop air and artillery bombardment and live fire.

As settler violence in the West Bank continues to rage, Palestinians report a worrying new trend of Israeli settlers dressed as soldiers carrying out attacks.

Eyewitness testimonies suggest a disturbing trend of illegal Israeli settlers disguising themselves as soldiers to attack Palestinians in rural areas of the West Bank.

On the afternoon of 19 March, 40-year-old farmer Fakher Bani Jaber from Khirbat al-Tawil, a small village in the northern occupied West Bank, was shot at point blank range by what appeared to be four soldiers. Local witnesses said the assailants were actually Israeli settlers.

While settler violence in the West Bank is not new, violence has exploded since 7 October, with Fakher Bani Jaber being the 24th Palestinian killed by Israeli settlers since then, according to a report by Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, The New Arab's Arabic-language sister edition.

A total of 434 Palestinians have been killed in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, during this period, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). The relentless violence has drawn international condemnation, with Britain following the US in placing sanctions on a number of violent extremist settlers earlier this year.

"[Imagine] seeing a settler transform in a matter of minutes into a soldier wearing the official uniform to kill you before returning to his usual state […] this is exactly what we are experiencing today in the Palestinian countryside. But the question is: Where are these settlers getting their weapons and military outfits?" said Aqraba municipality head Salah Jaber said. Aqraba is a village southeast of Nablus in the northern West Bank.

"The answer is simple and shows the close cooperation between the two sides against us."

Locals who witnessed the crime stated that after Jaber's murder, his assailants fled toward a nearby settlement outpost.

Sixty-year-old farmer Samer Mohammed Khudr reported witnessing the entire incident, asserting he was certain the perpetrators were settlers. He recognised one of them—a long-bearded religious settler known for previous attacks on the inhabitants.

He added that the village is used to soldiers invading the area but that the soldiers "come in their military jeeps, not on foot as the four settlers did, likewise the regular soldiers don't run away when a clash with them has occurred. We can easily distinguish between the behaviours of the two parties".

ISRAELI ARMY TAKES MORE LOSSES IN GAZA (VIDEOS)

The Hamas Movement and other Palestinian armed factions in the Gaza Strip continue to inflict losses on the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF).

On March 27, the IDF announced that a Staff Sergeant from the Givati Brigade’s Rotem Battalion was killed during clashes with Hamas fighters in the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis. His death brought the toll of slain troops in the ground operations in the Strip 253.

More than 1,400 others have been wounded since the start of the operations. Between March 24 and 29 only, at least 61 troops sustained injuries in Gaza, according to Hebrew media.

The most intense battles have been taking place around the Shifa Hospital in Gaza City in the northern part of the Strip as well as in Khan Younis and nearby areas.

The al-Quds Brigade, the military wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, shared on March 29 a video showing its fighters shelling Israeli troops near the Shifa Hospital with mortars.

On the same day, Hamas’ military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, released video footage showing an attack with a rocket-propelled grenade against a residential building occupied by Israeli troops close to the Nasir Hospital in Khan Yunis. According to the group, several soldiers were killed in the attack, while others were wounded and evacuated in a helicopter.

While failing to defeat Hamas and other factions in Gaza, the IDF continues to kill Palestinian civilians. On March 29, the health ministry in the Strip announced that 71 people were killed and at least 112 others were wounded in the last 24 hours only.

“Many people are still trapped under rubble and on the roads as rescuers are unable to reach them,” the ministry said in a statement.

The ministry added that at least 32,623 Palestinians have been killed, mostly women and children, and 75,092 others injured since the outbreak of the Israel war on Gaza.

In addition to the high number of casualties, the Israeli war, now in its 175rd day, has pushed 85% of Gaza’s population into internal displacement amid acute shortages of food, clean water, and medicine, while 60% of the Strip’s infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed, according to the United Nations.

Leader of Northern Ireland's main unionist party steps down as he is charged with sexual offences

Sir Jeffrey Donaldson left his post with immediate effect pending the outcome of the judicial process, the Democratic Unionist Party said.

The announcement came after police in Northern Ireland said a 61-year-old man had been arrested and charged with non-recent sexual offences.

A 57-year-old woman was charged with aiding and abetting additional offences, the Police Service of Northern Ireland said. Both suspects are due in court on April 24.

British police generally do not identify suspects by name.
