Take a look at the bridge "pier" before the ship hit it. What do you see? It's like four twigs waiting for the inevitable.
A large vessel doesn't stop on a dime. It will drag a dropped anchor. Since the anchor is pulling against the chain the ship will steer in the direction of the anchor. This is why there are two anchors at the bow. Double the force and an even straight ahead pull. You could kinda steer a large ship by anchor by dropping just one.
