The prospect of Canadians struggling with a worsening housing crisis has not stopped the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation from dishing out generous bonuses to 98% of its workforce last year.

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation issued a press release on Thursday, highlighting access-to-information records, which showed that the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation issued over $27 million in bonuses in 2023.

The bonuses in 2023 push the total amount received in bonuses since the beginning of 2020 by CMHC employees to $102 million.

Federal Director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, Franco Terrazzano, criticized the bonuses, questioning their alignment with the CMHC’s 2023-2027 corporate plan’s primary goal which called for “housing affordability for all.”

“Why is the CMHC patting itself on the back and showering its staff with bonuses when Canadians can’t afford homes?” asked Terrazzano.

Last year, the CTF showed that the corporation paid almost $27 million in bonuses in 2022.

Terrazzano also posted a video to X, pleading that anyone sick and tired of hearing the same story send a letter to Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, asking her to “stop rewarding failing bureaucrats with taxpayer-funded bonuses.”

The Canadian government should license journalists and partner with international allies to create an intergovernmental policing body to monitor the internet. Those were the views expressed by CTV pundit and McGill professor Raphaël Melançon during a lecture last week.

Melançon is a visiting scholar at McGill University and holds an Eakin Fellowship with the school. He frequently appears on CTV Montreal as a political analyst and has also written for the French outlet Les Affaires.

In the past, Melançon served as a director of communications for Quebec’s minister of tourism and has also worked in a similar role for the federal government in 2015.

While delivering a lecture on social media and polarization, Melançon said in response to a question on Bill C-18, the Online News Act, that an intergovernmental policing agency akin to Interpol should be set up to monitor the internet for falsehoods and enforce the legislation abroad.

“(Bill C-18) is going to have a limited impact. There is what we can do in Canada in our jurisdiction but there’s also the fact that you have lies coming from abroad and our laws do not apply to what happens outside of our borders,” said Melançon.

To alleviate the man from his mental anguish, a doctor agreed to chop off his fourth and fifth fingers.

This procedure came after the man attempted behavioral therapy, antidepressant medication, and exposure therapy. After these strategies, the man said that his distress only increased, prompting the doctor to proceed with surgery.

According to a case report written by Dr. Nadia Nadeau who works in the Department of psychiatry at Université Laval, the man said “he couldn’t imagine himself living for the years to come with those fingers.”

On Thursday, Canadian families who lost loved ones in the Oct 7, 2023, Hamas terrorist attacks filed a Federal Court application for judicial review of the Government of Canada’s decision to resume funding for the embattled United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), claiming that the decision was patently unreasonable because it violates Canadian law.

The advocacy group, the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), is representing the families against UNRWA, which has been accused of supporting terrorism and having employees who were members of Hamas. Earlier this year, it was alleged that 12 UNRWA staffers were involved in the October 7 massacre against Israel.

It was later revealed that approximately 10 percent of Palestinian staffers in UNRWA had ties to Hamas and Islamist militant groups.

The bombshell revelations led to the US, Canada, and other countries suspending funding to the agency.

The legal challenge is led by members of CIJA’s Legal Task Force, Ottawa-based human rights lawyer Lawrence Greenspon, and co-counsel Jillian Siskind.
