On Friday, Vanessa Bryant filed for divorce from her Laker hubby after 10 years of marriage. But this wasn't the first time the couple encountered some major marital strife.
In 2003, Kobe, 33, was accused of sexually assaulting a female hotel employee in Colorado. The charges were later dropped and he famously purchased a $4 million dollar, eight-carat purple diamond ring for Vanessa, 29, as an apology.
So once Kobe and Vanessa's divorce is finalized, who will get to keep the bling? "It may not be a true gift," Christopher C. Melcher, a family law attorney, told the Los Angeles Times.
In California, something doesn't qualify as a gift unless there's a signed document noting that it was actually a gift, he told the paper. This means there's a likely possibility that the ring is considered community property and would be among the assets split.
According to documents obtained by TMZ, Vanessa is seeking joint custody of the couple's daughters, Natalia, 8, and Gianna, 5. She and Kobe reportedly do not have a prenuptial agreement.
