The Japanese businessman served on the high-powered board of trustees of the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory, founded in 1866, which is headed by one of Putin’s closest friends Viktor Zubkov, 82, now powerful chairman of energy giant Gazprom, and earlier Russian prime minister.

The steely Zubkov has known Putin since the Soviet era and is reported to be one of his most trusted confidants. Zubkov's ex-son-in-law Anatoliy Serdyukov was a previous Russian defence minister. Gazprom and other energy giants have been hit by suspicious deaths during Putin’s war in Ukraine.

Japanese CEO with links to Vladimir Putin's inner circle found dead in 5-star Moscow hotel

Jun Aoki, 55, CEO of Yamaha Music in Russia, died in the iconic Stalin skyscraper, formerly the Ukraine Hotel, and now the five-star Radisson Collection Hotel Moscow

A Yamaha Music CEO with close links to Vladimir Putin's inner circle has been found dead in a 5-star Moscow hotel.

Music chief Jun Aoki, 55, Russia, died in the iconic Stalin skyscraper, formerly the Ukraine Hotel, now the five-star Radisson Collection Hotel Moscow. His company said the cause of the death was “currently being determined”.

Russian outlet RBC also reported an investigation was underway while “no bodily injuries were found”. A law enforcement source reportedly told RBC the businessman’s death did not appear to be of a "criminal nature".

Another media source, BAZA, said “acute heart failure” was suspected. Aoki had not made contact for several days. His acquaintances alerted police, and his body was found at the prominent hotel, across the Moscow River from the headquarters of Putin's government, according to reports.

Two other pro-Putin political leaders Sergei Mironov, 71, and Leonid Slutsky, 56, serve on the same board of trustees headed by Zubkov. Yamaha Music issued a short statement saying: “We confirm the passing of our CEO Jun Aoki. The cause of his death is currently being determined. The company continues to operate as normal.”

His death comes after a former aide to Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was beaten with a hammer and doused in pepper spray outside his home. Leonid Volkov, 43, was savagely attacked as he sat in his car after pulling up outside his property in Lithuania last month. It comes amid claims Russia is continuing to go after Navalny's associates a month after the activist was found dead in a Siberian prison.
