As we eagerly await the solar eclipse on April 8, we’re reminded of Thomas Jefferson’s fascination with astronomy. Indeed, he recorded—with varied success—four observations of solar eclipses in 1778, 1791, 1806, and, most famously, the“Constitution Day” eclipse of September 17, 1811.
