Very interesting analysis by a seasoned chief engineer on cargo ships. Worth a few minutes.

 

tldr: He thinks there was some type of fuel issue with the generators affecting the main power and then the backup…explains the black smoke; doesn't think they ever got the main engine running or had rudder authority. Kobayashi Maru kind of situation…causal factors aside, once this cascade starts, you're pretty much f'd in a tight harbor with no tugs.
