The letter was endorsed by ABC, CBS, CNN, NBC and Fox News.

“We, the undersigned national news organizations, urge the presumptive presidential nominees to publicly commit to participating in general election debates before November’s election,” the letter reads, according to a draft version obtained by The New York Times.

The letter is not yet final, and the networks are also seeking endorsements from other leading national news organizations, including newspapers.

Mr. Biden has repeatedly declined to commit to participating in the three debates scheduled for September and October. His aides say they are concerned that the Commission on Presidential Debates, the nonpartisan group that has organized the telecasts since 1988, will be unable to enforce the rules when Mr. Trump takes the stage.

Mr. Trump has vowed to debate, and has taken to taunting Mr. Biden for not following suit. But Mr. Trump’s track record is mixed: In 2020, he pulled out of a debate against Mr. Biden at the last minute, prompting its cancellation, and in the recent Republican primary he refused to appear onstage, even once, with his opponents.

The television networks’ letter was organized as a response to the uncertainty, said the people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe private discussions about an ongoing effort.

“General election debates have a rich tradition in our American democracy, having played a vital role in every presidential election of the past 50 years dating to 1976,” the draft letter reads. “In each of those elections, tens of millions have tuned in to watch the candidates debating side by side, in a competition of ideas, for the votes of American citizens.”

Haiti police wrestle control of pirated cargo ship in FIVE-HOUR gun battle with the 5 Seconds and Taliban gangs led by fearsome warlords Izo and Jeff

Haiti police have regained control of a hijacked cargo ship following a deadly five-hour shootout with gangs lead by two bloodthirsty warlords.

Two police officers were injured and an undetermined number of gang members were killed in the gunfire which took place on Saturday off the coast of the capital, Port-au-Prince.

Police said those responsible for the hijacking were members of two mobs, named the 5 Seconds, run by Johnson André, known as Izo and the Taliban gang led by Jeff Larose.

The gangs seized the transport ship Magalie along with everyone on board as it left the port of Varreux for Cap-Haitien in the north on Thursday.

Radio Tele Metronome reported that the gangs stole 10,000 out of the 60,000 sacks of rice it was carrying.

It comes as the country has been plunged into the throes of civil war with lawless gangs running riot.

It was a rare victory for an underfunded police department that has struggled to quell gang violence following a spate of attacks that began on February 29 led by Jimmy Chérizier, better known as Barbecue.

The most recent gun battle between police and gangs comes more than a month after gunmen began targeting key government infrastructure.

They have burned down multiple police stations, opened fire on the main international airport that remains closed and stormed Haiti's two biggest prisons, releasing more than 4,000 inmates.

On Sunday, news site Radio graphie reported that the Taliban gang used a front loader to demolish a police station in the Port-au-Prince suburb of Canaan where at least four police officers were killed in a recent attack. The station was no longer operational.

The ongoing violence forced Prime Minister Ariel Henry to announce he would resign once a transitional presidential council is formed.

Henry was in Kenya to push for the UN-backed deployment of a police force from the East African country when the attacks began and remains locked out of Haiti.

In the weeks since he resigned, Haiti has become an 'open-air prison' with 'apocalyptic' violence, the UN warned.

Gang members who now run the streets in the war-torn Caribbean nation are equipped with military-grade guns which have been illegally shipped from the US.

Weeks of gang violence have forced some 18 hospitals to stop working and caused a shortage of medical supplies as Haiti's biggest seaport and main international airport remain closed, aid workers with The Alliance for International Medical Action, warned.

'The situation is really challenging and affects our movement on a daily basis,' said Antoine Maillard, the organization's medical coordinator based in Port-au-Prince.

The gang violence has driven about 17,000 people in the capital from their homes. Many are crammed into abandoned schools and other buildings where they often share a single toilet.

Philadelphia: At Least 3 People Injured In Shooting, Including Teen Suspect Shot By Officers

Multiple people have been shot and injured at an Eid event in West Philadelphia.

On Wednesday, around 1,000 people had attended a celebration for the end of Ramadan when a shooting broke out and at least three people were injured.

Police have stated that three people were shot during the end of the event that was held near the 4700 block of Wyalusing Avenue.

Officials said that approximately 30 shots had been fired.

One of the officers assigned shot a 15-year-old who reportedly was armed with a firearm twice after he refused to drop the gun.

The officer then reportedly put the 15-year-old into her patrol vehicle and rushed him to the hospital.

Another man, 23, had been shot in the stomach and another juvenile arrived at a nearby hospital after sustaining a gunshot wound to the hands.

Reports stated that authorities have taken five people into custody including three men, one woman and the 15-year-old shot by the officer. Five weapons were also recovered at the scene.

Police sources have stated that they do not believe the suspects were connected to the peaceful celebration.

Philadelphia City Council Majority Leader Katherine Gilmore Richardson stated that she was appalled to learn about the incident.

“I am completely appalled to learn that multiple residents have been injured following a shooting during an Eid al-Fitr event in West Philadelphia,” said Richardson. “While Eid marks the end of Ramadan and is meant to be a celebratory occasion, families and community members must now deal with yet another senseless shooting. I am praying for the victims, their families, and entire Muslim community in Philadelphia. I will continue working with my colleagues in City Council to see that we invest additional resources in our neighborhoods so that every community in the City feels safe.”

EXCLUSIVE: House Republicans Demand Investigation Into DOE’s $37M Fine To Largest US Christian University

A group of House Republicans, led by Arizona Rep. Andy Biggs, sent a letter Monday to the Department of Education demanding an investigation into their $37.7 million fine recently imposed against Grand Canyon University (GCU), the largest private Christian school in the U.S.

The Daily Caller first obtained a copy of the letter, which was sent to Sandra Bruce, the Inspector General of the Education Department. In the letter, the lawmakers say the department is “using its unchecked power to inappropriately target” the Christian university and call for the “evidence” supporting the Education Department’s allegations to be investigated.

GCU was fined $37.7 million after the Education Department said that it lied to over than 7,000 students about the price of certain doctoral programs. The lawmakers mention that the allegations were “refuted” in federal court by the Higher Learning Commission and by the Arizona State Approving Agency of the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Biggs was joined by Arizona Reps. Debbie Lesko, Eli Crane and Paul Gosar.

“ED’s actions instead are a direct result of their well-documented disapproval of successful for- profit colleges and their unexplainable opposition to GCU’s 2018 conversion from for-profit to non-profit, which was supported by the Internal Revenue Service, the Higher Learning Commission, the State of Arizona, Arizona Private Postsecondary Board, and NCAA Athletics,” the lawmakers wrote in the letter. “Since GCU first appealed ED’s refusal to recognize their non-profit status in 2021, ED has targeted the university. The Department of Education appears to be using its unchecked power to inappropriately target GCU. This outrageous fine and the ‘evidence’ supporting ED’s allegations must be investigated.”

“The Department of Education’s egregious fine against GCU is yet another example of a weaponized federal government,” Biggs told the Caller before sending the letter. “The ED is utilizing its unchecked bureaucratic power to unjustly target a Christian university. The fine and ‘evidence’ supporting the ED’s allegations against GCU must be investigated.”
