Zelensky promptly revealed to the world Germany’s own national security concerns.

British-trained commando held after botched Ukrainian sabotage op – Moscow

The captive provided evidence of London’s role in planning military operations against Russia, the Federal Security Service (FSB) said

A Ukrainian special operations trooper who was captured in a botched infiltration attempt has provided intelligence onBritish involvement in Kiev’s commando activity, Russia’s Federal Security Service(FSB) claimed on Thursday.

The Ukrainian combatant was identified in the statement as Evgeny Gorin, age 38. He and his fellow commandos from the 73rd Naval Special Purpose Center of the Ukrainian Special Operations Forces were intercepted by Russian troops when they tried to land at the Tendra Spit, a long sandbar in the Black Sea in Kherson Region.

Gorin confirmed during interrogation that he had received training in sabotage at Bulford Camp, England. He also confirmed that British military advisers had developed operational plans for an attack on a gas rig in the Black Sea.

The statement did not specify when the Ukrainian operation took place, but named the rig, which has been under Russian control since 2014. Officials in Kiev claimed in 2018 that the Russian military had deployed a radar station to the offshore facility. The FSB stressed that the Ukrainian assault on the site failed to yield “the equipment that the British were interested in” and that the Ukrainians used explosives to blow up the rig’s communications post.

The FSB stated that the Ukrainian unit is patronized by the Special Boat Service (SBS), the special operations unit of the British Royal Navy. Gorin’s testimony is an eyewitness account “of direct SBS involvement in developing actions directed against Russian security and training perpetrators of those actions on British soil,” the agency stressed.

The Ukrainian commando team was intercepted in a counteroperation conducted jointly with the Defense Ministry, according to the statement. The agency had learned about the Ukrainian plans in advance, it claimed.

EU member rebukes West over ‘belligerent’ Russia talk

NATO should be prepared for an attack from Moscow, although this is “highly unlikely,” Finnish President Alexander Stubb has said

The West need not fear a potential Russian attack for at least a few years and should instead devote most of its available security resources to supporting Ukraine, as well as readying its own militaries, Finnish President Alexander Stubb has said.

In an interview with the Financial Times on Thursday, Stubb, who was sworn into office last month, expressed concern that the West had been sidetracked by “rather belligerent talk” that Moscow could attack NATO.

“I think we should prepare for that, but I think it’s highly unlikely,” the president argued, nonetheless urging members of the US-led bloc to “prepare for the worst in order to avoid it.”

According to Stubb, the EU has several years to change its thinking from what he described as the “la-la land” era following the collapse of the Soviet Union,when most European countries slashed their defense spending to prioritize welfare.

For the time being, hecalled on his Western counterparts to “support Ukraine for as long as it takes and at this stage with almost whatever it takes.”

Kiev urgently needs assistance as Russia sees a “window of opportunity” to push back Ukrainian troops as part of a potential major offensive this year, Stubb claimed. He further suggested that this window would last until late summer or early autumn.

Finland, which broke with decades-long neutrality and joined NATO last spring, is doing its utmost to give Ukraine as many weapons as possible, while replenishing its own stocks, the president said.

Stubb’s comments come as a string of Western leaders warn that Russia could attack NATO countries within a few years, insisting that the bloc must ramp up its defense industry and military power to brace for a potential stand-off.

UK Defense Secretary Grant Shapps went so far as to suggest that the world is in a “pre-war” period, and that any Western nations that fail to invest in security are playing “Russian roulette.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin has dismissed speculation that Moscow plans to attack NATO as “nonsense.” At the same time, Russia has for decades voiced concern about the eastward expansion of the US-led military bloc, seeing it as a “tool of confrontation”aimed at undermining the country.

US citizens backing Russia – Zelensky

Moscow’s lobby has pierced American politics, the Ukrainian president has claimed

Russian influence has penetrated the US political system and warped the information field around the world, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky claimed in an interview with Politico on Tuesday.

Zelenskywas asked to comment on recent statements made bytwo Republican lawmakers: Mike Turner of Ohio and Mike McCaul of Texas. They claimed that “pro-Russian” propagandahas filtered into the minds of some of the members of Congress, which has failed to greenlight the $60 billion aid package for Kiev.

The Ukrainian leader stated that Russia has succeeded in distorting “the information field of the world.”

“They have their lobbies everywhere: in the United States, in the EU countries, in Britain, in Latin America, in Africa,” he said. “When we talk about the Congress — do you notice how they work with society in the United States?”he noted, adding that the scale of Russian influence in the US has been underestimated.

He claimed that US citizens were helping Russia by spreading its ideas in the American media.

“They pump their narratives through the media,” Zelensky said. “These are not Russian citizens or natives of Russia, no. They are representatives of certain media groups, citizens of the United States.”

According to Zelensky, these people work in the US media and deliver the appropriate messages, which are sometimes “very pro-Russian.” He hasn’t mentioned any names though.

Following the start of Russia’s military operation in Ukraine in 2022, Western governments launched a large censorship campaign against Russian media they deem to be ‘state-controlled’. Multiple Russian TV stations and media outlets, including RT, have been either blocked or prevented from operating in the US and some other Western countries.

RT, having been the first international news channel to reach one billion views on YouTube, was banned from the platform and those owned by the US-based tech giant Meta, including Facebook and Instagram, in the spring of 2022.

According to the Foreign Ministry in Moscow, Russian journalists working in the US have been facing difficulties, including over visa renewals; they’ve had their bank accounts blocked and in some cases been hounded by US intelligence agencies.

Last year, James Rubin, the special envoy and coordinator of the US State Department’s Center for Global Engagementadmitted that Washington wanted to shut down Russian media around the world.

Commenting on his remarks, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said that by taking such steps, Washington, which positions itself as a stronghold of human rights, demonstrated a deep disregard for media freedom.

Ukraine forcing troops to keep fighting

Lawmakers in Kiev rejected a provision that would allow conscripts serving for three years to return home

The Ukrainian parliament hasvoted against demobilizing the country’s longest-serving conscripts, forcing them tostay on the front indefinitely. The vote came as lawmakers passed a broad mobilization bill imposing new restrictions on draft-dodgers, and potentially drafting the handicapped.

The legislature voted on Thursday to pass a long-awaited bill aimed at replenishing the country’s beleaguered armed forces. The bill was expected to include a passage allowing troops who have served for 36 months to be demobilized,but a last-minute amendment removed this passage, effectively compelling these troops to keep fightingpast February 2025.

The amendment passed by 227 votes to 21, with 97 lawmakers abstaining, according to the Kiev Post.

It was first seen in a final version of the bill published on Wednesday, and its inclusion angered service members who had been expecting some reprieve from combat.

“This is a disaster… How could it be possible to promise demobilization to soldiers…only to abandon them at the end?” Ukrainian State Border Guard Service officer Maxim Nesmaynov wrote on Facebook. “You can’t take away hope from soldiers that they will return home. Someone is trying to destroy the country from inside!”

Ukraine has been in a state of martial law since the conflict with Russia broke out in February 2022. Under martial law, Ukrainian conscripts are required to serve until the end of hostilities, with few exceptions.

General Aleksandr Syrsky, the commander-in-chief of Ukraine’s armed forces, insisted to lawmakers that this requirement remain in place, the Kiev Post reported.

Thursday’s bill includes a raft of measures aimed at bolstering military recruitment. Itrequires all Ukrainian citizens living abroad to upload their personal information to a recruitment database, mandates that all citizens aged between 18 and 60 carry military registration documents, and bans military service evaders from driving. The billalso requires individuals previously deemed unfit for service due to disabilities to be re-evaluatedfor enlistment, and introduces a three-month period of mandatory military service for citizens under 24.

The bill will now be sent to the desk of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to be signed into law. Earlier this month, Zelensky – at the insistence of some of his Western backers – signed a controversial law lowering the military conscription age to 25 from 27.

Ukraine has lost more than 440,000 troops since February 2022, according to figures published last month by the Russian Defense Ministry. In an update last week, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu put the Ukrainian military’s losses since January at more than 80,000 men.
