Going to the mattresses is straight out of the Godfather saga and is a phrase indicating a war between the families rather than leaning on someone to get a certain objective.
Protests are lame with the possible exception of pro life marches which include left and right. Most right leaning people would rather eat worms than waste their time marching around like pansies in the heat when they have chores, birthday parties, church, etc. to take care of. They protest at the polls. The left likes marching around because they need to see that other people have the same attitude and they LOVE to be seen being activists.
