Normal strange behavior from the LAPD last night. From a personal source: At 5 pm, Friday afternoon, Van Nuys (San Fernando Valley) police answered a call about an irate man with a gun. Something having to do with a welfare check set him off. It was also 115 F at the time. Officers were fired at, returned fire, then retreated, with the suspect barricaded inside his apt. Within minutes of the retreat, police and emergency vehicles by the dozen began showing up. By sundown there were over 60 unmarked vehicles, including 4 SWAT trucks, Fire dept emergency vehicles, and two helicopters circling overhead. News vans parked nearby and set up cameras. A police spokesperson said little other than a suspect was barricaded and not answering calls. All of this was taking place on a very busy roadway, which was closed in both directions during rush hour. The standoff lasted until near 4am when SWAT entered the apt and found the suspect dead, reportedly from a self inflicted gun shot wound. What stands out to me was the sheer overkill response. Did it really require all those responding vehicles, 100 or so officers, 4 SWAT vehicles, and 2 helicopters? The bill for that has to be through the roof. Out of control CA/city of Los Angeles governance. Dead suspect turned out to be a one time NBA player. Naturally, that automatically adds a race card in play.
