can't remember the source but - if a young child watches a lot of TV and does not have a lot of verbal dialogue with elders or peers they often bond with the TV as the authority figure.

Evidence of this is in adults who seem to not recognize in others a skill set or knowledge base and ignore information until they hear it through media.
