EU country’s huge bill for Ukrainian refugees’ pets revealed – media

The Irish government spent up to €1 million a month to house pets owned by refugees, the Irish Mirror has revealed

Irish taxpayers footed the bill for accommodatingnearly 2,000 pets owned by Ukrainian refugees, includingsome they acquired after arrivingin the country, according to local media.

The money was allocated by the Department of Integration mostly in 2022, with peak spending recorded in November that year, the Irish Mirror reported on Wednesday, based on its own investigation. At that time, 1,806 pets were staying in hotels and other properties at the state’s expense, including 933 dogs, 819 cats, and 54 other animals.

It cost Ireland up to €20 ($21.50) per night for each of the animals owned by Ukrainian Beneficiaries of Temporary Protection (BOTPs), records reviewed by the news outlet revealed.

The exact sum spent specifically on non-human guests could not be established because the department “did not categorize between BOTPs and pets,” a spokesperson told the newspaper.

The Irish Mirror estimated that accommodation for the animals was costing taxpayers just over €1 million ($1.07mn) per month.

The expenditure was “incredible” and “ridiculous,” independent lawmaker Michael McNamara told the newspaper, accusing the government of wastefulness. Referring to department officials, he asked: “What planet do these people live on?”

“I presume the people arriving here with pets were prepared to pay for them in the same way as everyone else does or as they would have in Ukraine,” the politician added. “But if you find a department stupid enough to pay, then, of course, I wouldn’t blame people for allowing the department to pay for it.”

The department said it stopped providing accommodation for Ukrainian pets from November 9, 2022.

The latest report is a follow-up on a story that the Irish Mirror published in February, revealing that the =•Irish Department of Agriculture had spent €808,132 (about $869,000) on transport, kennelling and veterinary services for Ukrainian pets.==

(How are the Irish people not losing their minds about this? The Ukrainians have stolen their homes and villages, along with forced Muslims, replacing all of them.)

German communities can’t take any more Ukrainians– local government boss

Numerous districts are struggling with overstretched resources, the head of a local councils’ association has said

Communities across Germany cannot take in more refugees, particularly those arriving from Ukraine, the president of a local councils’ association has told the Neue Osnabrucker Zeitung newspaper.

Germanyhosts an estimated1.15 million Ukrainian refugees, the largest number in Europe, followed by Poland, the Czech Republic, and the UK, according to figures from the UN Refugee Agency dated from last month.(Estimated Muslims are 2+ million)

While roughlytwo-thirds of Ukrainian refugees are employed in Polandand the Czech Republic, that numberstands at only 20% in Germany, Deutsche Welle reported earlier this year. (So yes Ukrainians refuse to work in Germany)

In an interview with Neue Osnabrucker Zeitung on Saturday, local councils’ association president Reinhard Sager, who is also a member of the opposition Christian Democratic Union party, warned that a “number of districts andcommunities are overstretched by legal and illegal migration.”

“The integration of all the people is no longer possible,” he added.

Sager pointed out that thefederal government has slashed fundingfor municipalities which are faced with formidable costs associated with migrant and refugee accommodation. “If the number of refugees doesn’t quickly decrease noticeably and enduringly, the problems will become ever bigger, and they will come back to bite,” Sager predicted. This couldlead to growing support for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AFD) party, he claimed. (Scholz and others have to lose in June elections, they will probably cheat.)

Sager demanded that Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s government abolish the so-called citizen’s benefits currently granted to Ukrainian refugees, echoing statements made earlier this year by Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Soder. At present,Ukrainian nationalsin Germany areentitled to more than €500 ($545) a month, and children between €357 and €471. This level of assistance ishigher thanthe support provided to other categories of asylum seekers and refugees.

“With all due solidarity, we pose the question to Ukraine whether so many people from the country attacked by Russia must come to us?,”Sager stated. He emphasized that thesouthern German regionof Baden-Wuerttemberg alonehosts twice as manyUkrainian refugeesas France. Refugee camps could instead be established in western Ukraine, or Poland might be willing to take in more people with the EU’s support, Sager suggested.

According to a poll in February, nearly50% of respondentssaid the German government wasgiving Ukrainian refugees “too much support,” while more than half believed that efforts to integrate newcomers had failed.

Another survey conducted on behalf of the broadcaster ZDF earlier this month showed thatless than half of Germans wanttheir government to sendmore military aid to Ukraine. A poll commissioned by FOCUS magazine last month revealed that 53% of respondents backed Pope Francis’ call for Ukraine to engage in peace negotiations with Russia without any preconditions.

West close to sending military to Ukraine, this would 'drag Europe to bottom' — Orban

"This military whirlpool can drag Europe to the bottom. Brussels is playing with fire and angering God," the Hungarian prime minister said

BUDAPEST, April 19. /TASS/. The West is one step away from sending troops to Ukraine and this military whirlpool can drag Europe to the bottom, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban is quoted as saying by the online resource Index.

"Today in Brussels there is a pro-war majority. The mood in Europe is bellicose. The logic of war dominates politics. I see preparations for war on the part of everyone and everywhere. NATO’s secretary-general has said he wants to set up a NATO mission in Ukraine. The European leaders are already involved in war, <…>they see this war as their own war and are waging it as such.

• At first it was just about sending helmets, then it was about sanctions, but not about energy, of course.

• But then it came to the sending of weapons: first, firearms, then tanks, airplanes, financial aid of more than tens of billions of euros, and now somewhere around 100 billion euros.

But this money and these weapons do not make the situation better. In fact, it is getting worse. We are one step away from the West sending the military to Ukraine. This military whirlpool can drag Europe to the bottom. Brussels is playing with fire and angering God," Orban said.

Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron did not explicitly rule out the possibility of sending ground troops of Western countries to the zone of the special military operation. The director of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service, Sergey Naryshkin, said on March 19 that France was already preparing a military contingent to be sent to Ukraine.

(Orban is not wrong, the war speak has escalated higher and higher. If Bidan sends in troops, that he’s staged in every country on Russia and Ukraine’s border since early 2022, the stupid EU will join him. It’s crazy but they are really stupid. Very few of these countries have an actual fighting force and fewer have nuclear arms. The West and EU need to get at least one win, they are desperate due to upcoming elections. Any escalation to Russia is playing with hell fire.Putin doesn’t threaten, he warns, and they should be heeded.)

No dip in Telegram downloads in China — founder

"Apple shot itself in the foot with its centralized 'walled garden' app policies," Pavel Durov noted

MOSCOW, April 22. /TASS/. Telegram downloads in China did not see a decline after the app was removed from China’s version of the App Store, co-founder of the messengerPavel Durovsaid on his official channel.

Reuters and The Wall Street Journal reported earlier that WhatsApp and Threads from Meta [recognized in Russia as extremist], Telegram, Signal and Line had been removed from the App Store. This directive came from China's cyperspace department and was linked to new cybersecurity rules introduced in summer 2023.

"We haven’t seen any decrease in downloads coming from China — andI don’t think Telegram was the main target of this change," Durov noted. "Apple shot itself in the foot with its centralized 'walled garden' app policies," he noted. This policy means keeping users in one ecosystem and in the case of Apple it is about only being able to install apps via the App Store.

Unlike iPhones, most Android operating system-based phones allow sideloading apps outside app stores. "As a result of this change, the iPhone’s market share in China will keep shrinking," the Telegram co-founder concluded.
