Bumble bees fly in a similar manner as helicopters do. When you measure just their wing area, and calculate lift based on that alone, there is not enough area to achieve flight. BUT…. when you calculate the area that the wings move within, and use that entire area to calculate the lift, there is more than enough to achieve flight.
