Hong Kong regulator to probe PwC over China Evergrande audits

The financial watchdog in Hong Kong has decided to launch an investigation into PricewaterhouseCoopers' (Rothschild) role in auditing the books of distressed property giant China Evergrande Group following a whistleblower report.

The move by the Accounting and Financial Reporting Council (AFRC) comes in response to an open letter by unidentified purported PwC partners that circulated on social media earlier this month. The letter claimed that PwC "turned a blind eye" to Evergrande's misconduct for more than a decade.

The letter called out an executive by name. PwC's Hong Kong subsidiary denied the claims in a statement released April 15, saying that "we believe the letter contains inaccurate statements and false allegations." The AFRC announced the investigation in a news release Friday, citing "the gravity of these allegations" in the whistleblower report.

A core unit of Evergrande said in March that Chinese financial authorities had imposed a fine for overstating revenues by 564 billion yuan ($78 billion) for 2019 and 2020. PwC served as Evergrande's auditor for those years but later resigned over disagreements regarding the 2021 audit.

According to the AFRC, the whistleblower report claimed that PwC failed to "adhere to professional standards in respect of the acceptance and continuance of its client relationship" with Evergrande. The allegations also include PwC failing "to assign appropriate personnel to key positions responsible for the firm's system of quality management," it said.

"The AFRC will not hesitate to take stringent enforcement actions against any firms and individuals if they are found to have committed any misconduct" or violated the law, the news release said. (yeah sure….how long has this shit gone on for?)

This shit (and real shit has more value) gets zeroed out and buh-bye western banks (Blackrock was STILL buying it in ‘21 and HSBC increased its stake by 40% at same time)…and that doesn’t even count the CRE AND bond losses they are ALL sitting on. Keeping this in mind all these losses in the CRE arena need to be refinanced so if you think the FED (Bond Market) is going to keep rates elevated as these CRE loans come due you need to consider a few things: if you tokenize all this shit you don’t need banks so hello CBDC or you create yet another ‘crisis’ and pick one or two banks like in March 2023 and “fix it” for another year with yet another acronym bailout program….printing presses are like that.
