I did see this once. On Second Mesa on the Hopi Reservation. I used to walk around the desert early in the morning before the sun would come up. I found a nice spot on the mesa to sit and watch the sun appear. When the first light started to appear, as soon as the light of the sun began to break the horizon, this enormous pillar of light shot up high into the atmosphere. I was astounded and couldn't quite believe what I was seeing.
