Most of the middle east was owned by very wealthy, though absentee, Egyptian grain moguls, and when the Brits decided to build the Canal, they realized that they had to own the land it was built on, and all the access to it.

They bought all the land, 90% of the middle east at least, which is why they were able to do the Belfour deal, before they started the canal.

Who owns Syria?

the Brits do.

Who owns Saudi Arabia and all of its oil?

the brits do.

Libya?

the brits own it, the Germans tried to take it, remember?

Yemen?

Oman?

all owned by the Brits.

These countries were created, for administration purposes, by the Brits. They used a ruler to create new borders., they wanted each of these "dominions" to have at least one port.

If you see the maps of the middle east, and it has a straight line for a border, it's owned by the Brits.

Same for the USA BTW, its why you have straight lines for state borders.

Literally, the Brits got a pencil, and a ruler, and created you.
