Many people who witnessed this moment had tears of shock in their eyes. It was like a holy hour. From now on, the oldest Ostmark of the German folk was the youngest bulwark of the German nation and thus of the German Reich. The same blood belonged in a common empire. Greater Germany had arisen.
On April 10, 1938, both a Reichstag election and a referendum on the annexation of Austria took place. There was one ballot paper for each of the two referendums, and in the referendum on the annexation it was possible to vote "yes" or "no". According to official figures, 99.73% of Austrians and 99.01% of Reich Germans voted in favor of the annexation in the referendum, which was conducted according to grassroots democratic principles.
