Stocks Tank After Disastrous First Quarter GDP Report

The U.S. economy grew at 1.6 percent in the first quarter of 2024 according to the first advance estimate released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) on Thursday morning, a significant slowdown from the fourth quarter of 2023 in which GDP increased 3.4 percent. Economists had expected GDP growth to slow in Q1 — but not this much — projecting around 2.5 percent.

According to the BEA release, "the deceleration in real GDP in the first quarter primarily reflected decelerations in consumer spending, exports, and state and local government spending and a downturn in federal government spending," movements "partly offset by an acceleration in residential fixed investment" and an acceleration in imports.

While the economy slowed more than expected from Q4 2023 to Q1 2024, inflation surged upward. The price index for GDP purchases jumped to 3.1 percent in the first quarter of 2024 from 1.9 percent in the last quarter of 2023. The personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index jumped 3.4 percent in Q1 after rising 1.8 percent in Q4. The core PCE price index — excluding food and energy costs — increased even more in Q1 to 3.7 percent compared to Q4's 2.0 percent level. All these numbers are above what economists expected and higher than the Federal Reserve's target of just 2.0 percent.

Across the board, inflation is not "coming down" as President [Chairman] Biden continues to falsely claim.

[Chairman] Biden has already, as usual, cherry-picked numbers to claim that the Q1 GDP "report shows the American economy remains strong, with continued steady and stable growth." But there's nothing stable about an economy that just shrunk more than economists expected while inflation continues to explode. [Chairman] Biden can spin as much as he wants but, even by omitting the truth of the full report, he won't be able to hide the everyday pain an economy in this condition creates for Americans.

GDP grew at 1.6% rate in the first quarter, much less than expected

The economy expanded at a 1.6% seasonally adjusted annual rate in the first quarter of this year, a big slowdown in growth that surprised investors.

The new figures, which are adjusted for inflation, were published Thursday by the Bureau of Economic Analysis in its report for GDP. Economists had expected GDP growth to increase by 2.5%, so the reading is worse than anticipated.

“Slow economic growth is a direct result of bad Democratic policies that have caused stubbornly high inflation, overregulation, and a credit crunch,” he said. “Potential Democrat tax increases would grind even this slow growth to a halt. Voters who want a return to a robust economy should remember this on Election Day.”

Mike Johnson: Senate Won’t Pass Bill on Border Security This Year

The office of Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-La.) acknowledged that it is increasingly unlikely that the U.S. Senate will pass a major bill on border security between now and the election at the end of the year.

According to Fox News, the spokesman from Johnson’s office said that the most likely scenario under which any border security legislation can pass is if former President Donald Trump wins the November election and returns to power.

The remarks come after the House overwhelmingly passed a $95 billion aid package also proposed by Johnson, which supported such countries as Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan. Unlike the staunch Democratic opposition to any border legislation, the foreign aid package passed with bipartisan support, including half of the Republican members.

Conservatives in the House have criticized Johnson for failing to work border security into the foreign aid package, which would have forced Democrats to either support it or keep up the legislative stalemate.

“The only path forward for substantive border legislation was to leverage the Biden regime’s push for more Ukraine aid,” said Congressman Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) on X last week.

Throughout the presidential primaries this year, Republican voters have overwhelmingly indicated in exit polls that immigration is their top issue ahead of the general election, thus boosting the already-strong campaign of President Trump, who has vowed to secure the southern border and enact a nationwide deportation operation.

ICE reported the detention of an accused pedophile in Massachusetts on Monday. He was initially let loose among the public by the courts in defiance of a detainer request.

The unnamed Brazilian crossed the U.S. border illegally in July 2021. He was detained by Border Patrol but soon released. By 2023 he had been arrested for driving without a license and, more seriously, rape of a child and enticement of a child under 16.

On Wednesday, ICE confirmed the deportation of another Brazilian, wanted in his home country for “the offense of rape of a vulnerable individual, or statutory rape of a minor 14 years of age or younger.”

On Thursday, ICE confirmed the arrest of a Colombian illegal alien convicted of premeditated murder in his home country. After serving just four years in prison, the unnamed 44-year-old made his way to the U.S., entering undetected as a so-called “gotaway.”

Grothman indicated that ICE is attempting to monitor at least 6 million illegal aliens. Of these, 617,000 — greater than the population of Wyoming — are known to have criminal records or pending criminal charges.

“The fact is that illegal aliens should not be in the country in the first place and able to commit these crimes,” Grothman said, urging the Biden regime to “stop releasing illegal aliens into the country in droves.”

A culture of lying has metastasized around the theory of man-made global warming since its emergence as a prominent political movement in the 1990s. That it has become more politics than science is quite telling.

The lies are everywhere: Unreliable computer modeling has replaced empirical observation; observed temperature values are manipulated when they don’t conform to the narrative; the baseless assumptions and false premises at the root of the theory; the fake consensus of “experts” and scientists; the fundamental problems with “green energy”; false claims that storms and wildfires have gotten more common and severe; and the ever more inaccurate predictions of climate doom.

The pronouncements by adherents of net-zero and decarbonization policies have grown progressively more hysterical, in direct proportion to the lack of available evidence of the efficacy of those policies. All the while, if the media reports on the scientific debate at all it does so using straw man arguments and ad hominem attacks to minimize those who question the science behind the theory. More often, the corporate media simply goes more radical in the language used to assume the crisis and inject it into every story, regardless of subject.
