‘Absolute liars': Ex-D.C. Guard official says generals lied to Congress about Jan. 6

In a 36-page memo to the Capitol riot committee, Col. Earl Matthews also slams the Pentagon’s inspector general for what he calls an error-ridden report.

A former D.C. National Guard official is accusing two senior Army leaders of lying to Congress and participating in a secret attempt to rewrite the history of the military’s response to the Capitol riot.

In a 36-page memo, Col. Earl Matthews, who held high-level National Security Council and Pentagon roles during the Trump administration, slams the Pentagon’s inspector general for what he calls an error-riddled report that protects a top Army official who argued against sending the National Guard to the Capitol on Jan. 6, delaying the insurrection response for hours.

Matthews’ memo, sent to the Jan. 6 select committee this month and obtained by POLITICO, includes detailed recollections of the insurrection response as it calls two Army generals — Gen. Charles Flynn, who served as deputy chief of staff for operations on Jan. 6, and Lt. Gen. Walter Piatt, the director of Army staff — “absolute and unmitigated liars” for their characterization of the events of that day. Matthews has never publicly discussed the chaos of the Capitol siege.

On Jan. 6, Matthews was serving as the top attorney to Maj. Gen. William Walker, then commanding general of the D.C. National Guard. Matthews’ memo defends the Capitol attack response by Walker, who now serves as the House sergeant at arms, amplifying Walker’s previous congressional testimony about the hourslong delay in the military’s order for the D.C. National Guard to deploy to the riot scene.

“Every leader in the D.C. Guard wanted to respond and knew they could respond to the riot at the seat of government” before they were given clearance to do so on Jan. 6, Matthews’ memo reads. Instead, he said, D.C. guard officials “set [sic] stunned watching in the Armory” during the first hours of the attack on Congress during its certification of the 2020 election results.

Matthews’ memo levels major accusations: that Flynn and Piatt lied to Congress about their response to pleas for the D.C. Guard to quickly be deployed on Jan. 6; that the Pentagon inspector general’s November report on Army leadership’s response to the attack was “replete with factual inaccuracies”; and that the Army has created its own closely held revisionist document about the Capitol riot that’s “worthy of the best Stalinist or North Korea propagandist.”

The memo follows Walker’s own public call for the inspector general to retract its detailed report on the events of Jan. 6, as first reported by The Washington Post. Walker told the Post he objected to specific allegations by the Pentagon watchdog that Matthews’ memo also criticizes, calling the inspector general’s report “inaccurate” and “sloppy work.”

The new memo from Matthews, who now serves in the Army reserves, emerges as officials involved in the response that day try to explain their decision-making to investigators. The House select committee has probed the attack for months, and earlier this year top officials testified before the House oversight panel.

Reached for comment, Matthews said the memo he wrote is entirely accurate. “Our Army has never failed us and did not do so on January 6, 2021,” he said. “However, occasionally some of our Army leaders have failed us and they did so on January 6th. Then they lied about it and tried to cover it up. They tried to smear a good man and to erase history.”

Flynn, now the commanding general of the U.S. Army Pacific, and Piatt didn’t respond to messages. Army spokesperson Mike Brady said in a statement that the service’s “actions on January 6th have been well-documented and reported on, and Gen. Flynn and Lt. Gen. Piatt have been open, honest and thorough in their sworn testimony with Congress and DOD investigators.”

Publix heiress, funder of Jan. 6 rally, gave $150,000 to GOP attorneys general association

A wealthy Trump donor who helped finance the rally in Washington on Jan. 6 also gave $150,000 to the nonprofit arm of the Republican Attorneys General Association, records show, funds that a person familiar with the contribution said were intended in part to promote the rally.

The nonprofit organization paid for a robocall touting a march that afternoon to the U.S. Capitol to “call on Congress to stop the steal.”

On Dec. 29, Julie Jenkins Fancelli, daughter of the founder of the Publix grocery store chain, gave the previously undisclosed contribution to RAGA’s nonprofit Rule of Law Defense Fund, or RLDF,

records reviewed by The Washington Post show. On the same day, the records show that Fancelli gave $300,000 to Women for America First, the “Stop the Steal” group that obtained a permit for

the rally featuring former president Donald Trump.

Funding for the events in Washington that day is a focus of the House select committee investigating the violent riot at the U.S. Capitol that followed the rally.

The panel is also interested in the role state officials, including attorneys general, played in encouraging people to go to Washington on Jan. 6 and in supporting Trump’s efforts to overturn the election,

according to people familiar with the committee’s work.

The leaders of Women for America First have been subpoenaed by the committee, as has Caroline Wren, a Republican fundraiser who was listed on that group’s permit as a “VIP ADVISOR.”

Both of Fancelli’s donations were arranged by Wren, according to the records and the person with knowledge of the contributions, who like some others interviewed for this story spoke on the condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter.

“We have many questions about coordination and funding, and we are actively seeking records and testimony that will answer those questions,” said committee spokesman Tim Mulvey.

“Many witnesses are already engaging with the committee, and we expect cooperation to help us get the answers we’re seeking.”

The documents sought by the subpoenas sent to rally organizers were due Wednesday.

Fancelli, who is not involved in Publix business operations, did not respond to multiple requests seeking comment, and it is unclear if she knew about the robocall ahead of time.

In a statement to the Wall Street Journal, which reported in January that Fancelli had given approximately $300,000 to support the rally,

she said: “I am a proud conservative and have real concerns associated with election integrity, yet I would never support any violence, particularly the tragic and horrific events that unfolded on January 6th.”

Alex Jones, a far-right talk show host and conspiracy theorist who was involved in the Jan. 6 rally, has said that it cost “close to half a million dollars.”

He has also said a donor he did not identify paid for 80 percent of the rally.

In a statement to The Post, Wren’s lawyer said: “Ms. Wren, in her role as an event planner, assisted many others in providing and arranging for a professionally produced and

completely peaceful event at the White House Ellipse with hundreds of thousands of Americans who were in D.C. to lawfully exercise their first amendment rights, a primary pillar of American democracy.

It was signed on 20 July 1933 by Cardinal Secretary of State Eugenio Pacelli, who later became Pope Pius XII, on behalf of Pope Pius XI and Vice Chancellor Franz von Papen on behalf of President Paul von Hindenburg and the German government.

It was ratified 10 September 1933 and it has been in force from that date onward. The treaty guarantees the rights of the Catholic Church in Germany.

When bishops take office Article 16 states they are required to take an oath of loyalty to the Governor or President of the German Reich established according to the constitution.

The treaty also requires all clergy to abstain from working in and for political parties.

Nazi breaches of the agreement began almost as soon as it had been signed and intensified afterwards leading to protest from the Church including in the 1937 Mit brennender Sorge encyclical of Pope Pius XI.

1797–1867

The United States maintained consular relations with the Papal States from 1797 under President George Washington and Pope Pius VI to 1867 and President Andrew Johnson and Pope Pius IX. Diplomatic relations existed with the Pope, in his capacity as head of state of the Papal States, from 1848 under President James K. In appealing to the Vatican’s support for religious freedom as a reason to drop its China agreement, Mr. Pompeo seemed to seek common ground, but in a way that upset the pope’s chief allies and delighted his chief critics.

Cardinal Parolin said Mr. Pompeo’s article had caused “surprise” at the Vatican, because this visit to Rome by the secretary and the meetings with high officials at the Holy See had already been in the works and would have been a “more opportune” forum for airing grievances. It is June 6 1969 and Spain is living through the final years of Franco’s dictatorship. At a clinic in Madrid, a woman gives birth to a baby girl she will never see again.

Little is known about what happened to that mother – but almost 50 years later, her daughter Inés Madrigal has just given evidence in a shocking trial.

In the dock was Dr Eduardo Vela, an 85-year-old former gynaecologist accused of stealing Inés from her biological mother.

Vela is alleged to have given the baby as a “gift” to a couple, the Madrigals, who were unable to have their own children. He denies the charges.

Despite the cinematic plot, this is not an isolated case. A network of baby trafficking is believed to have involved a vast network of doctors, nurses, nuns and priests.

Although there is no official figure, the SOS Stolen Babies association estimates that as many as 300,000 babies were taken from their parents in Spain between 1939 and the 1990s.

Now 49, Inés Madrigal works for the association and is the first “stolen baby” to successfully take an alleged perpetrator of one of these crimes to court.

An 85-year-old doctor will appear in a Madrid court Tuesday, the first person to stand trial over an alleged practice that saw thousands of babies stolen under Spain’s military dictatorship during the mid-twentieth century.

Known as the lost children of the Franco-era, as many as 300,000 babies are estimated to have been abducted from their mothers under General Francisco Franco, who ruled Spain from 1939-75, and in the decades after.

The theft of newborns began in the 1930’s after the Spanish Civil War as an ideological practice, stripping left-wing parents or Franco-opponents of their children as a way of ridding Marxist influence from society.

But in the 1950’s, the practice expanded to poor or illegitimate families who were seen as economically or morally deficient, Agence France-Presse reports.

New mothers were often told their babies had died and the hospital had taken care of the burials. These babies were allegedly sold for adoption and involved a wide network of doctors, nurses, nuns and priests, according to AFP.

The system carried on after Franco’s death in 1975 until 1987, when a new law was implemented regulating adoption.

Dr. Eduardo Vela, who will appear in a Madrid court Tuesday, has been charged with falsifying official documents, illegal adoption, unlawful detention and certifying a non-existent birth, AFP reports.

The former gynecologist is accused of having taken Ines Madrigal, now aged 49, from her biological mother at birth, and given to another woman who was falsely certified as her birth mother.

According to DNA tests, Madrigal is not related to her late parents. Before her adopted mother died in 2016, Madrigal told a judge that she had been given by Vela as “a gift,” the BBC reports.

Campaigners say at least 2,000 other similar cases have been filed with Spanish prosecutors but until now, none have gone to trial, AFP reports.

An 85-year-old gynaecologist is to become the first person in Spain to stand trial in connection with the alleged theft and sale of hundreds of thousands of children during and after the Franco regime.

Dr Eduardo Vela arrives in court today charged with the abduction and illegal adoption of a new born girl in 1969, in what is being seen as a test case that could trigger wider investigations into the scandal.

Victims’ groups claim as many as 300,000 babies were stolen and sold under the dictatorship of General Francisco Franco between the end of the Spanish Civil War in 1939 and the years after his death in 1975.

Many were taken from Republican families and given to those loyal to the regime.

Franco remains a contentious figure in Spain, and the role of the Catholic Church in supporting the regime and facilitating the sale of children has led some to suggest many would prefer to bury the past.

In 2008, investigating Judge Baltasar Garzón estimated that 30,000 children had been stolen from families considered politically suspect by the Franco regime after the civil war.

But the BBC says “little was known about the private trafficking of babies that continued in the 1960s until two men went public with their story in 2011”

One of these, Antonio Barroso, who had been sold by a priest in Zaragoza as a child and founded the association Anadir (National Association for Irregular Adoption Victims),

calculates that 15% of adoptions in Spain between 1965 and 1990 were the result of babies being taken without consent from their biological parents.

It led to more than 1,000 Spanish families launching a campaign seeking lost children, siblings or birth parents.

In 2011, when news of the scandal first broke, El Pais revealed how Spain’s stolen children network operated, implicating priests, nuns, doctors and government officials.

The paper said the decades-long trade in babies involving hospital staff and Roman Catholic Church-run children's homes was active “not only in Spain, but had an international dimension to it”.

Childless couples in the US, as well as Central and South America, would also come to Spain to circumvent adoption procedures.

Last year, the then-Popular Party-led government signed an agreement with the left-wing Podemos to invest €100,000 in a digital platform to investigate DNA data related to Spain’s stolen baby scandal.

Twentieth-century Spain was a politically unstable, highly divided nation. In 1931, King Alfonso XIII abdicated after the results of elections were interpreted as a plebiscite on abolishing the monarchy.2

What followed was “one weak government after another.”3

In 1936, with a socialist coalition governing Spain, “army leaders, backed by some of the country’s wealthiest families, decided they…had enough of democracy, and more than enough of socialism.”4

Army general Francisco Franco (1892–1975) was chosen to lead the revolt.

The resulting civil war (1936–1939) was a manifestation of the divisions in Spain. The legal, socialist government (the “Republicans”) was supported by party-line communists, Trotskyites, anarchists, socialists,

and some low-level Catholic clergy. The rebels (the “Nationalists”) consisted of the Spanish army, large landowners, and the Catholic church hierarchy. The Republicans got support from international volunteers, Mexico,

and the Soviet Union. The Nationalists were supported by ground and air forces of Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany.

Half a million people died in the war. Of these, 20% (100,000) were killed in battle. The remaining 400,000 died in air raids or from executions or disease.5 The Republicans (called “Reds” by their enemies)

confiscated church property and killed about 10,000 bishops, priests, nuns, and monks.6 The Nationalists (“Fascists”) imprisoned and often murdered anyone who did not demonstrate Nationalist sympathies.

Providing food to a Republican fighter could result in a long prison term.

After the Nationalist victory in 1939, the ruling party found other ways of punishing opponents and preventing children from “inheriting” anti-government ideas from their parents.

Pregnant woman who were Republican sympathizers, socialists, atheists, or unmarried, were considered “degenerate.” They could not be good mothers, and their newborns needed to be adopted into “better” families.7

Some women were heavily sedated at the time of delivery and then told that their (liveborn) baby had been born dead. Other women saw and heard their newborns, who were then taken “to see the doctor,”

and were later told that their baby died of a congenital anomaly.

Some women delivered twins but were told that they gave birth to a singleton, and that they must have been confused.

Parents were forbidden to see their “dead” child. The San Ramón Maternity Hospital kept a frozen newborn cadaver to show parents who insisted on seeing their child. One mother, decades later,

recalled how her “newly dead” infant was ice-cold. The parents were not permitted to be at the infant’s burial. Some of these infants’ coffins, exhumed decades later, contained stones or adult remains.8

This happened in maternity hospitals across Spain. The participants in this conspiracy were doctors, nuns, midwives, and priests. It has been estimated that as many as 300,000 babies were stolen from their parents.9

These babies were then sold to prospective adoptive parents. This criminal activity, which started in 1939, may have continued until the 1980s,10 1990,11 or 1999.12

The adoptive parents were told that the baby had been left at an orphanage without any information (sin datos) about their origins.

One gynecologist admitted destroying any records before the child was sold to the adoptive parents. He was tried in 2018 and was found guilty of kidnapping and falsifying birth records.

The statute of limitations on his crimes had expired, and he received no penalty.13

The Spanish public has been aware of this national scandal since 2012, when several men, “adopted” as babies, learned the truth behind their adoptions.

Spanish law limits access to birth records until the patient (the woman who delivered) has been dead for at least twenty-five years.14

The story of stolen babies is not unique to Spain. Nazi Germany kidnapped 200,000 Aryan-looking Polish children to be adopted by German parents.15

Illegal removals and adoptions have taken place in China, Ethiopia, Chad, India, Guatemala,16 Australia,17 Canada,18 Norway, Sweden, Finland,19 and the US.20

The Catholic Church is no stranger to scandal. They’ve attempted to systematically wipe out entire religions, and covered numerous sex crimes committed within their church,

but one of the most unforgivable things the Catholic Church has ever done has been to take part in Spanish baby trafficking.

Throughout the 20th century the Spanish arm of the Catholic Church would steal newborn babies from their mothers and sell them to the highest bidder. As far as church scandals go this is pretty high up there.

Not only is this behavior absolutely abhorrent, it’s also in direct opposition to their faith. This Spanish child kidnapping rite, like so many Catholic Church crimes,

proves that the people who rise to the highest places of power within organized religion care less about humanity are more about grabbing as much money and dominance as they possible can.

The Accused Didn't Face Charges Until 2018

Even though victims Juan Luis Moreno and Antonio Barroso brought the issue to light in 2011, it wasn't until August 2018 that alleged perpetrators faced charges.

Inés Madrigal, born in 1969 at San Ramon clinic in Madrid, claims a doctor kidnapped her and gave her away without her biological mother's permission. On August 14, 2018, her accused kidnapper,

obstetrician Eduardo Vela, stood trial and denied the allegations, telling a three-judge panel that he "never gave a girl to anybody." In 2012, Madrigal's adoptive mother (who passed in 2016) told CNN Vela gave her the baby.

The judges charged Vela with the illegal detention of a minor and forging a public document. Prosecutors are pushing for an 11-year jail sentence. Vela still denies "stealing" Madrigal and is pursuing a full acquittal.

Over 2,000 people filed stolen children suits with prosecutors.

It All Began In Post-War Spain

Following the Spanish Civil War (1936-39) General Francisco Franco became the head of the rebel Nationalist government and commander-in-chief of the armed forces.

Under his rule Spain became a hermit nation similar to that of modern day North Korea. Anyone who fought against the Nationalists during the war or who held opposing viewpoints were punished -

this includes anyone who wanted to have a child. These people were known as "undesirables" and Franco believed that anyone with an opposing viewpoint or who lived beneath a specific wage line wasn't fit to raise a child.

The task of taking babies away from single mothers and families who didn't fit into Franco's idea of ideal citizens was given to a network of Catholic priests and nuns who did their jobs efficiently and without asking any questions.

The Church Stole The Babies Shortly After They Were Born

Rather than snatch babies from cribs at night, the Catholic Church went straight to the source when they decided to kidnap children.

Directly after childbirth many babies were whisked away under the guise of routine testing and later their mothers were told that the baby had died.

One mother who experienced this first hand explained to the BBC that she fell for this trick because she had been raised to believe that the church was infallible and that they would have no reason to lie to her.

"I couldn't accuse them of lying. This was Franco's Spain. A dictatorship. Even now we Spaniards tend not to question authority."

Many of the mothers who asked to see their child after hearing that it had passed away claim that they were shown the corpse of a child who had been frozen, or that was freezing cold.

The Babies Were Sold To Well-To-Do Families

After the newborns were stolen from their mothers most of them were immediately sold to couples who held beliefs more inline with Franco's totalitarian and Catholic regime.

These families didn't just have the "right" set of core beliefs - they were also wealthy. Or at the very least they had enough money to buy a child in post World War II Spain.

It's likely that the adoptive parents weren't aware that they were buying a child that had been stolen from its mother hours before, and many of the parents actually had their names placed on the child's birth certificate.

Allegedly the families were either led to believe that the infant's mother had died in child birth or that the parents had given them up.

This Wasn't A Small Time Operation

It may seem like it would be tough to carry out a country-wide, state-sanctioned, web of church backed kidnapping; but that's where you're wrong.

These kidnappings started directly after the end of the Spanish Civil War in 1939, continued through World War II, and didn't end until the early '90s.

Spain may be a relatively small country but it must have been noticeable to someone that children were disappearing at an alarming rate.

Maybe people who brought up the numbers were squashed by the local government, or it's possible that the Franco's regime simply didn't care if they were called out on their horrible crimes.

Whatever the case many people believe that this web of Catholic kidnapping accounted for 15% of the total adoptions that took place in Spain between 1960 and 1989.

Priests Were Helping People Fake Pregnancies

When you think of the Catholic church stealing children and selling them to the highest bidder, you might imagine a nun running down a hallway with a baby, freshly ripped from its mother, and handing it off to the highest bidder.

Well, that definitely happened a few times, but in many cases the church prepped parents for their child and helped them fake a pregnancy to keep friends and family from asking questions.

Speaking to the BBC, an 89-year-old woman named Ines Perez admitted that a priest helped her work out a fake pregnancy before she received a baby girl in 1969. She said, "The priest gave me padding to wear on my stomach."

How To Sneak A Baby Out Of A Maternity Ward

Even though the Catholic church was working in tandem with Spain's government it still shouldn't have been so easy to steal a bunch of babies. Many priests and nuns who carried out the thefts went through a ridiculous series of steps to ensure that they weren't caught.

Priests and nuns would first falsify a birth certificate stating that the child had been born to the family who was paying for the baby, and then they would usually concoct a lie about why they were handing off such a small child before pushing the family out of the hospital -

thus decreasing the risk of anyone being caught. One woman who received a baby from the Catholic church claims that she was told her adopted child was born premature, but that in reality it had probably just been born moments before.

She claims that the doctor told her to put the baby in her car "between two hot water bottles."

The Payment Plan

In many cases even when a family could afford to buy a child they couldn't pay for it all up front so a payment plan was established.

When Juan Luis Moreno's father confessed on his deathbed that Moreno had been purchased from a priest he realized that his annual family trips to Zaragoza weren't vacations - they were a contractual obligation.

Moreno told the BBC that his adoptive father knew exactly what he was doing and that the church didn't even try to hide its scam. "My dad was given a choice: boy or girl.

They put it bluntly: This was a market for babies." Moreno said that his adoptive father claims that the going price for a child at the time was twice the price of their family home.

No One Is Going To Get In Trouble For This

Despite believing that what they were doing was for the greater good of the Spanish people, General Franco and his regime knew it was wrong.

After Franco's death a series of amnesty laws were passed so that any crimes that took place while he was in power would never be examined in a court of law.

Some prosecutors have decided to look into the thefts on a case-by-case basis, but that's easier said than done.

While there are some cases to go through, many children who were kidnapped and sold to families have decided not to come forward for fear their adoptive parents are seen as criminals. One person, a nun named Sister Maria Gomez,

was brought to court for kidnapping but she refused to speak in court.

It's Almost Impossible To Prosecute This Insane Crime

Aside from the lack of political will to prosecute for the crime, it is incredibly hard to prove in court the illegality of the case.

A prosecutor in Madrid pointed out a few of the biggest issues with trying to prove wrongdoing in a case of systemic kidnapping.

First, you can't pursue a criminal case over a false birth certificate because the crime has passed the statute of limitations.

And as far as the Spanish criminal justice system goes a false birth certificate doesn't legally prove that a baby has been kidnapped.

As it stands the Spanish Catholic church's history of child kidnapping will go unpunished. The only thing that can be done is to remain vigilant against those in power.

It is 6 June 1969 and Spain is living through the final years of Franco’s dictatorship. At a clinic in Madrid, a woman gives birth to a baby girl she will never see again.

Little is known about what happened to the mother – but almost 50 years later, her daughter Inés Madrigal has just given evidence in a shocking trial.

In the dock was Dr Eduardo Vela, an 85-year-old former gynaecologist accused of stealing Inés from her biological mother.

Vela is alleged to have given the baby as a “gift” to a couple, the Madrigals, who were unable to have their own children. He denies the charges.

Despite the cinematic plot, this is not an isolated case. A network of baby trafficking is believed to have involved a vast network of doctors, nurses, nuns and priests.

Although there is no official figure, the SOS Stolen Babies association estimates that as many as 300,000 babies were taken from their parents in Spain between 1939 and the 1990s.

Now 49, Inés Madrigal works for the association and is the first “stolen baby” to successfully take an alleged perpetrator of one of these crimes to court.

The roots of these crimes date back from the origins of Francoism when Spanish fascists were trying to prove eugenic theories of dissidents’ mental inferiority.

It was a thesis defended by the military psychiatrist Antonio Vallejo-Nágera – aka “the Spanish Mengele” – who led Franco’s office of psychological research.

He argued that political beliefs promoted in left-wing families could “intoxicate” children and “damage the mental health of future generations”.

Vallejo-Nágera also believed that women had an “atrophied intelligence” and their sole life purpose was to procreate.

This ideological context helps explain the profile of the “adopters” of the stolen babies – affluent married women raised in a Catholic country who were unable to have children of their own.

Social pressure was extreme (male sterility wasn’t even considered back then) and having children equated to fulfilling their role in a devoutly Christian society.

Yet what started as an ideologically driven plan to purge Spain of an inferior race (the Marxists) turned into a lucrative business. Newborn children were taken away from their mothers without consent.

They were told the child was born dead or had died soon after.

Most of the time, children would be registered as the biological child of the adopting family, who would pay large sums of money for them.

(Some adopting families were also deceived and believed they were legally adopting children in need of a home.)

These acts represent one of the darkest chapters of Franco’s dictatorship. But its ideological roots share similarities with cases in Latin America in the 1970s and 1980s,

when children of dissidents (prisoners, murdered or “disappeared” people), were given to supporters of the regimes in Argentina, Chile and Uruguay.

But, as with many other originally Francoist crimes, in Spain the illicit network outlived the authoritarian regime. After Franco’s death in 1975,

many perpetrators are believed to have continued their practices during Spanish democracy in the 1980s and 1990s.

Among the many problems victims face, the lack of institutional support in Spain is probably one of the most serious.

Evidence of the extent of the network is still unclear, and the Spanish Catholic church has so far denied access to its files.

Earlier suspicions over the scandal were previously never taken forward and police dropped the cases given the repercussions and the people involved: politicians, lawyers, doctors – a sinister network of crime.

But despite recent public promises very little has been done to support the cause.

Something as simple as a DNA database to help clarify heritage is still overdue in Spain. The lack of documentary evidence and the statute of limitations has resulted in most of the cases being shelved.

So far, the only person convicted in relation to these cases is Ascensión López – herself one of the alleged “stolen babies” – who was prosecuted for slandering a nun.

A court ruled she had wrongly accused the nun of taking her from her biological mother and handing her to ageing adoptive parents in 1962.

Lost children of Francoism

The lost children of Francoism (Spanish: niños perdidos del franquismo, niños robados por el franquismo; Catalan: nens perduts del franquisme, nens furtats pel franquisme;

Galician: nenos do franquismo, pícaros roubados polo Franquismo) were the children abducted from Republican parents, who were either in jail or had been assassinated by Nationalist troops,

during the Spanish Civil War and Francoist Spain.[1] The kidnapped children were sometimes also victims of child trafficking and illegal adoption.[2] The numbers of stolen children are highly speculative;

these figures may include children who became orphaned as a result of the Civil War (1936-1939) and, therefore, do not fall under the same category as children taken away from their parents by the regime after the war for political or social reasons.

Children who were stolen or adopted by families during or immediately after the war may have been victims of either side in the conflict. The issue has been highly ideologized in recent years as the political environment in Spain has become highly polarized.

Hispanic eugenics

Hispanic eugenics was pioneered by doctors like Antonio Vallejo Nájera and Gregorio Marañón. Antes que te cases was published by Nájera in 1946, with one part saying,

"Racial decadence is the result of many things but the most important is conjugal unhappiness in the most prosperous and happy of homes. … Eugenic precepts may avoid morbid offspring. …

It is impossible a robust race without a sound preparation of youth for marriage, through Catholic Morality. This little work is a minuscule contribution to the exaltation of the Fatherland."[3]

Marañón's 1921 Maternidad y feminismo, republished as a second edition in 1951, said, "The difference between the sexes is insurmountable.

Such difference emerges from the anatomical surface of each man and woman, and it goes to the deepest, darkest roots of life, to the home of the cells."[3]

Victims' groups have stated that the baby kidnappings developed into a business that continued into the 1980s.[20]

In January 2011, the families of 261 babies who disappeared in hospitals over a duration of fifty years put forward their case to the attorney general in Madrid.[20]

This started when two brothers were told by their foster father that he had bought them from a priest; the pair then went to the media and the story spread, making others come forward.[21]

Evidence consisted of nurses and people who admitted illegally adopting babies, with hospital staff, nuns and priests being suspected of being part of an organised network.[20]

People underwent DNA tests in the hope of reuniting their families but there were few matches. Many graves of dead infants were dug up for DNA-testing but some contained no remains while others contained those of an adult.[21]

According to lawyers involved in some cases, the number of abducted children is estimated to be up to 300,000.[21]
