In 2010 Chelom was invited to be a Fulbright Fellow in Ukraine and teach in Schevshenko University in Kyiv. She also ran a research study in Ukraine on how religious and secular traditions were associated with couple and parent-child relationship well-being.

Their experiences in Ukraine prompted them to create the Leavitt Institute for International Development, which teaches law in 23 Ukrainian and Moldovan law schools. Through the Leavitt Institute, legal professionals have volunteered more than 19,000 hours teaching law students in Ukraine, Moldova, and Rwanda. David says, “Service expands us. It makes us into people that we didn’t know we could become.”
