Dmitry Drize: Macron unleashes the geographical weapon against Russia
Not long ago the French leader believed the continent was almost as big as Africa. Now he’s reduced it in size by about 75%
French President Emmanuel Macron has delivered a speech on the future of our shared continent. He’s calling for reform of the Old World, as otherwise it is at risk of dying.
His general impression is that whathe calls Europe is too sluggish, too clumsy, and often unable to meet many modern challenges. According to him, it is also essential to continue supporting Ukraine. At the same time, the head of the Fifth Republic formulated the thesis of a single territory of values from Lisbon to Odessa, whereas earlier he spoke of a great Europe extending to Russia’s Far Eastern capital Vladivostok.
Kommersant FM political observer Dmitry Drize does not rule out a final break between the West and Russia.
This is known to be a reference toCharles de Gaulle’s famous phrase about a multipolar world in Europe “from the Atlantic to the Urals.” Russian official sources recalled that Macron said at a joint press conference with President Vladimir Putin in 2020 that he “believes in Europe from Lisbon to Vladivostok.”
But now Ukraine is being helped – long-range missiles and other equipment are being transferred, albeit with delays. As for Russia, it appears that we have been somehow excluded from Europe. Geographically, a large part of our country is still there, and it is not possible to change the existing order of things. Mentally, however, in terms of today’s values,they are saying, ‘We will do without you.’
That sounds a little offensive. But there is nothing surprising about it, because not only is the Russian Federation seen as the main threat, but they are claiming that we will attack NATO countries. Some have even named the supposed dates for such attacks.
But the interesting thing is that Russian travel agencies are seeing an increase in demand for the Old World. There are queues for Schengen visas, and consulates are overwhelmed. Italy, Spain and France are still popular destinations. This is despite the fact that the cost of travel has multiplied and these countries are unfriendly, if not downright hostile. Why is that? It’s hard to say. But this strange and supposedly decaying world is still attractive.
Or perhaps we are not enemies at all?Even the West does not fully understand this.
And here it is time to return to big politics. It is safe to say thatwe are now in the process of considering how to proceed: whether to separate completely– out of sight, out of mind – or to leave the door slightly ajar.
But there is a strong sense that this door is about to slam shut. And there is not much time left to stop it. So the demand for European tourist trips is justified – you should seize the opportunity while it lasts. Events are moving too fast.Macron has changed, one might say,from a dove to a hawk before our very eyes. It’s hard to imagine now that he was once scolded for his apparent loyalty to Russia.

All male Ukrainians required to undergo health checks ahead of new draft
The screening process could result in people being issued with military summonses immediately, according to media reports
All Ukrainians eligible for military service must undergo health checks in the coming months, a spokesman for Poltava Region’s draft office said on Monday. Even those granted military deferment are not exempt from the requirement.
Ukrainian men of draft age – between 18 and 60 – should present themselves at their local draft offices to “update personal data” under the new mobilization law, which was introduced earlier this month. They must do so within 60 days of the law coming into force on May 18.
According to the spokesman, the “personal data update” will be followed by an obligatory health check.
“One does not need to fear it or accuse the territorial draft office of [issuing] an illegal order,” said Roman Istomin. According to Ukraine’s Strana.ua news outlet, the readiness checks could result in a person being issued with a military summons paper and almost immediately drafted.
Ignoring such a document is a criminal offense under the new law, the media outlet noted. The legislation has simplified procedures for the draft as well as strengthening the penalty for draft dodging. Those who ignore the summons could face fines or have their driving licenses suspended.
The bill was stripped of a provision at the last minute that would have enabled men who had served for three years to be demobilized, effectively meaning that many troops would have to remain in the army indefinitely. Aleksandr Syrsky, the commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, reportedly lobbied for the change.
A separate law signed by President Vladimir Zelensky also lowered the age of conscription for men from 27 to 25.
The developments come as Kiev is struggling to replenish its forces as the conflict with Moscow continues. Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said in April that Kiev had lost nearly 500,000 soldiers since the start of the hostilities.
Zelensky claimed in February that 31,000 troops had been killed in the two years of the conflict. According to the Washington Post, the real figures were “vastly downplayed.” In December, Zelensky said the military had asked him to mobilize an additional 500,000 troops.
On Sunday, Ukraine’s TSN news media outlet reported, citing a soldier, that “no one is willing” to join the army and go to the front lines. People would rather “drown themselves” attempting to flee the country than join the fight, he claimed.

Russian drones strike Ukrainian positions in Donbass (VIDEO)
Moscow’s troops have made new gains amid continued offensive operations, the Defense Ministry has said
Russian forces have taken control of the village of Semyonovka in Donbass, the Defense Ministry has said in a statement on Telegram. The Russian military also published a video showing drone strikes targeting fortified Ukrainian positions in the area.
It includes several clips, mostly taken by cameras mounted on first-person-view (FPV) drones as they were approaching enemy trenches. Unmanned aerial vehicles can be seen precisely hitting positions, often located in wooded areas or near settlements, and hidden under camouflage nets.
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, Moscow’s troops also successfullyrepelled ten counterattacks by Ukrainian assault groups in Semyonovkaand some nearby villages. Kiev lost some 370 soldiers in the unsuccessful operation, it added.
Semyonovka is located west of the strategic Donbass town of Avdeevka, taken by Moscow’s forces in February. Russia has since managed to press the advance and capture several smaller settlements while breaching the Ukrainian defenses in the area.
On Sunday, Ukraine’s commander-in-chief,General Aleksandr Syrsky, admitted a “tactical” retreat in Donbass, confirming that Kiev’s forces had left Semyonovka and another Donbass village, Berdychi.
Last week, Russian Defense MinisterSergey Shoigu said that Moscow’s forces had seized the initiative in the Ukraine conflict and “dispelled the myth of the superiority of Western weapons.” His ministry also claimed that Kiev had lost over 8,000 soldiers in one week, alongside dozens of pieces of equipment, including US-made HIMARS and Czech-supplied RM-70 Vampire multiple rocket launchers.
Moscow’s forces are now firmly in control of the battlefield situation and are steadily pushing the Ukrainians back, Shoigu said on Monday. Last Friday, Syrsky told Ukraine’s backers that his troops face a “difficult operational and strategic situation, which has a tendency to get worse.”
