THE UKRAINIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH IS UNDER ATTACK.

Under the pretext of the war with Russia, Ukrainian government officials have sharply curtailedreligious freedoms and attacked the rights of members of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church(UOC). The victims, who are accused without evidence of aiding Russia, are demanding their guaranteed rights be respected.

Ukrainian secret police targets Christian journalists

The SBU has targeted Orthodox journalists reporting on the country’s church crackdown

Several employees of the Union of Orthodox Journalists (UOJ) have been subjected to raids by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), the group said on Tuesday.

The UOJ has reported on theongoing persecutionof the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) by Kiev, whichfavors the government-backedOrthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU).

“UOJ employees were approached by theSBU agents, who seized their computer equipment and phones,” the group said on its Telegram channel, adding that no one had been charged with any offenses.

SBU agents have alsovisited participants in prayer vigils, the UOJ added. The union could not comment any further, but said it would offer more information as it becomes available.

The SBU has yet to comment on the raids. It has previously tried to have theUOJ’s website blocked inside Ukraine.

President VladimirZelensky’s governmentlaunched a crusade against the UOC last year, denouncing the canonical church as an “agent of Moscow.” Russia has protested against the crackdown as a violation of human rights, to little avail.

Last week, theSBU arrested a priestin the Cherkasy diocese and charged him with making “anti-Ukrainian and pro-Russian statements.” Archpriest Boris Brodovsky was accused of spreading “fake news” and religious discrimination, for criticizing the OCU seizures of UOC churches.

For months, multiple Ukrainian regions havebeen seizing UOC property and handing it over to the OCU on a variety of pretexts. The Ukrainian parliament has prepared a bill to ban the UOC, but has yet to vote on it. Critics have warned that such a move would endanger Kiev’s ambition to join the EU.

More about Kiev and the Church

Ukraine’s KGB successor targets Russian church leader

The country’s security service believes Patriarch Kirill has spread “propaganda” supporting Moscow’s military campaign

The Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) has designated Patriarch Kirill, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, as a suspect in a criminal case related to his alleged active support of Moscow’s military operation against Kiev.

In a statement on Saturday, the agency said that together with the Prosecutor General’s Office it had gathered evidence against the religious leader and accused him of “promoting the armed aggression of the Russian Federation and denying the war crimes.”

The SBU claimed that Kirill “is a member of the inner circle of Russia’s top military and political leadership,”adding that he uses Orthodox communities both at home and in Ukraine “to spread propaganda.”

In total, according to the security service, the primate could face three criminal charges, including encroachment on Ukraine’s territorial integrity, “justification” and “glorification” of Russia’s actions in the conflict, as well as “planning, preparation, initiation, and waging an aggressive war.”

On February 24, 2022, the day Russia started its military operation, Kirill urged both sides to do their best to avoid civilian casualties, while arguing that centuries-old ties between the Russian and Ukrainian peoples would allow them to overcome the political schism.

A month later, he declared that Russia had “entered a struggle of not physical, but metaphysical significance.” He has also blasted both the Ukrainian government and its Western backers for “sabotaging” Russian efforts to resolve the conflict in Donbass since 2014, when hostilities first erupted in the region.

In September, the patriarch opined that “Russia faces the main task of emerging victorious from the struggle that has been unleashed by the forces of evil” while calling for the “mobilization” of all of Russian society.

Kirill has been placed under sanctions by Ukraine and a number of Western countries. The Russian Orthodox Church has denounced the restrictions, suggesting that they only play into the hands of those who “see the escalation of the conflict and the drift away from peace as an important goal.”

The investigation targeting the Russian church leader comes as theSBU, along with other Ukrainian government agencies, continues an unprecedented crackdown on theUkrainian Orthodox Church(UOC),suspecting it ofbeing a Russian tool despite it severing ties with Moscow shortly after the start of the conflict. Ukrainian officials have seized a number of UOC churches and turned them over to the Kiev-backed Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU) which is considered schismatic by the Russian Orthodox Church.

Ukraine issues arrest warrant for Orthodox Christian leader

A spokesman for the Russian church branded the move “lawless” and an “attempt to intimidate parishioners”

Patriarch Kirill, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, has been put on a criminal wanted list by Ukraine’s Interior Ministry. The document identified the Patriarch by his secular name and described him as “an individual hiding from the bodies of pre-trial investigation” and deemed him responsible for violating Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.

The head of Russia's Investigative Committee, Alexander Bastrykin, said that a criminal case had been opened following the announcement and that measures will be taken to identify the Ukrainian special service officials who are seeking to prosecute the head of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Patriarch Kirill has repeatedly called on his parishioners to support the participants of Russia’s military operation against Ukraine, who were “sacrificing their lives to protect our Orthodox people in the Donbass.”

Reacting to the news of the Patriarch’s being put on the Ukrainian wanted list, Russian church spokesman Vladimir Legoida labeled the move “predictable and absurd.” The Ukrainian authorities are guilty of “lawlessness and attempting to intimidate parishioners,” he wrote in a Telegram post.

Even before the conflict escalated in 2022, the Patriarch had been accusing Kiev of suppressing and discriminating against the Ukrainian Orthodox church (UOC), which was “an integral” part of the Moscow Patriarchate, citing physical attacks on religious leaders, relics, and places of worship. Patriarch Kirill has repeatedly condemned those actions and appealed to religious leaders across the globe to stop the “mass violations of the religious rights of the followers of the UOC” in Ukraine.

In May of 2022, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church declared its independence from the Russian Orthodox Church in response to Russia’s military operation. Despite the move, the administration of President Vladimir Zelensky continued favoring the Orthodox Church of Ukraine(OCU), which was created shortly after the Western-backed coup in 2014 that installed a pro-Western government.

The Ukrainian authorities and activists have been seizing the UOC’s places of worship and handing them over to the government-backed OCU. For instance, this past spring monks were evicted from the Kiev Pechersk Lavra, a golden-domed 11th-century UNESCO World Heritage Site, on suspicion of still having ties to the Russian Orthodox Church.Relics were looted under the guise of saving them during the conflict.

Pretty Odd Lobbyist Faith leaders standing up for Zelensky and Denying he’s persecuting religions to Mike Johnson

3 Nov, 2023 14:08

US House speaker refuses to meet Ukrainian lobbyists – WaPo (Propagandists sent to US to convince House Zelensky is not threatening religious freedom)

Faith leaders loyal to the Ukrainian government are touring the US to rally support for Kiev

US House Speaker Mike Johnson has turned down a request to meet senior faith leaders from Ukraine, the Washington Post reported on Monday. The group of pro-President Vladimir Zelensky figures is currently touring the US in a bid to convince Americans that Kiev is not threatening religious freedom.

The group is led by Bishop Ivan Rusin of the Ukrainian Evangelical Church and includes Muslim, Catholic and Jewish leaders, as well as members of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU) – a government-approved institution designed replace the traditional Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC), which the Kiev parliament voted to ban last month.

While Rusin has held meetings with American evangelical leaders and Republican lawmakers, an organizer for the delegation told the Washington Post this week that House Speaker Mike Johnson rejected a request to meet with the bishop and his colleagues.

Johnson – who voted against military aid for Ukraine last year but remains open to funding Kiev in future – did not provide an explanation for turning down the request.

Speaking to the Post, Rusin insisted that Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky is not restricting religious liberty in Ukraine, and that Russian forces are jailing pastors and destroying churches in the Russian regions of Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson, and Zaporozhye.

“Our pastors have been imprisoned in the occupied places, so for us, it’s clear that we will be at least imprisoned [if Russia wins],” he said.

However, American conservatives are unconvinced. “Is it easier to be a Christian in Ukraine or Russia?” former Fox News host Tucker Carlson asked at a Christian summit in Ohio in September. “One of those countries just arrested a bunch of priests and shut down churches with political police and the army. It wasn't Russia.”

In March, Zelensky’s government ordered the expulsion of monks from the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, one of the country’s oldest monasteries. Agents stormed the premises in August when UOC monks refused to leave.

Authorities in Kiev ordered the confiscation of 74 church properties in the Ukrainian capital in September, with many of the seized temples – including several churches inside the Pechersk Lavra – being turned over to the government-backed OCU.

The US State Department, which produces an annual “religious freedom” report, has never commented on Kiev’s campaign against the UOC. Amid the Kiev-Moscow schism, the Republican Party establishment has also sided with the OCU, with former Vice President Mike Pence telling Carlson in July that “very small elements” of the UOC had been “held to account” for “advancing the Russian cause.”

“I sincerely wonder how a Christian leader could support the arrest of Christians for having different views,” Carlson replied. “That’s an attack on religious liberty and we’re funding it.
