HSBC customers are furious as mobile banking app goes down leaving thousands of them unable to access their accounts
Explaining the error they had been receiving, one customer said: 'Cannot log on the app, and on the computer I get this message: 503 ERROR The request could not be satisfied.
'The Lambda function associated with the CloudFront distribution was throttled. We can't connect to the server for this app or website at this time.'
A fourth said: I need my banking asap for a payment what is going on?' while another complained: 'Haven’t had access since 9am to the app. it is resolved soon - not an ideal start to the BH weekend.'
HSBC said on X/Twitter: 'Some customers are having issues accessing online and mobile banking as usual right now.
'We're really sorry and are investigating as a matter of urgency. We will share an update as soon as possible.'
In a later statement issued at 11:30am, a spokesperson said: 'Our Online and Mobile Banking services are recovering. Customers should be able to use the services as normal.
'We're sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused this morning.'
Previously, HSBC apologised after more than 10,000 customers were unable to access their online accounts on November 24 last year.
The outage, which began just after 7am, meant many customers could not take part in the Black Friday sales.
Speaking at the time, Sam Richardson, of consumer group Which?, said: 'This fell on Black Friday, when many people were looking to make significant savings on big-ticket items.'

HSBC said the glitch was caused by an internal system issue. It did not affect customers with First Direct or M&S Bank, which are divisions of the company.
Meanwhile, Down Detector gets network status updates from various sources including social media and reports submitted to its website.
HSBC has around 14.8 million customers across the UK, although it remains unclear how many use its mobile banking app.
