massive influx of latinos in charlottesville.
we have 3-4 mostly el salvadoran grocery store with side restaurants. nice people, generally, and I speak fluent spanish, but the one I go to has a fairly small parking lot. never been an issue, but over the last six months, the place fills up and is overflowing to other places. not sure if these immigrants are using it as a lot for all day parking or what, cause the store didnt seem as busy as it looked, but today a distressed young latino man came in mumbling a bunch of garbage. while I wasn't paying much attention and only caught some of the problems, his spanish was extremely uneducated. didnt seem on drugs but could have been coming down from something. talking about being hungry and no parents, etc. looked about 20 something, not dirty smelly or anything, had a big cell phone but looked a bit disheveled and was missing a white tennis shoe. started to get frustrated as while people and male owners/cashiers were conversing, but he didn't seem satisfied or felt he wasnt being helped or taken seriously. he started to kick some fruit crates over and make a mess. not sure what he said, but some fat guy came over and punched him in the face. I had a 2 year old in my arms so I moved to the back of the store until things calmed down. I wasn't too worried as the guy clearly didnt have a gun, but damn if the one day I went out without my carry…
anyway someone finally called the police and they showed up as we were driving away.
anyway, this type of thing is rare, especially away from downtown. latinos are coming in en masse.
