US Pushing G-7 To Accept Long-Term $50 Billion Aid Package For Ukraine
As part of the latest in the Western allies' (some of them at least) controversial push to confiscate Russian sovereign assets and give them to Ukraine, the Biden administration is leading talks among G7 nations to commit to a new military aid package for Kiev worth up to $50 billion.
"Ideally, this is something we would like the entire G7 to participate in, be part of, not just have the United States doing it alone," US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen told Bloomberg. She further confirmed that Group of Seven countries are currently "discussing" the plan.
The package would be funded from interest accrued via investments utilizing the some $300 billion in Russian assets currently frozen in Western banks. The bulk of the frozen funds are in European banks, and some EU leaders fear devastating backlash and global distrust in its banking system would be the end result.
These frozen assets within the European Union (some $280 billion) are currently said to generate about 5 billion euros ($5.3 billion) in windfall profits annually.

Some €159 billion of frozen Russian assets have generated net profit of €557 million ($601 million) from Feb. 15, according to Euroclear’s first quarter financial results. Since last year, the assets have generated about €3.9 billion in net profit.
Russian sovereign assets held by the company could grow to as much as €190 billion by 2028 as they mature into cash, one of the people said.
The US is hoping that consensus agreement can be achieved for its plan by the time of the G7 June meeting in Italy, where it could be signed off on. Biden officials have recently floated concepts like "freedom bonds" to sell the idea among allies.
In response, the Kremlin has vowed to be "extremely tough" on "thieves" who appropriate what belongs to Russia. "Considering that our country has qualified this as theft, the attitude will be towards thieves," Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova earlier stated. "Not as political manipulators, not as overplayed technologists, but as thieves," she emphasized.
The Western allies have out of recent desperation over Ukraine's diminished ammo been getting creative, and seeking to find loopholes in order to free up extra funds that could be used in the war effort.

Israeli government shuts down Al Jazeera
The Qatar-based news channel has called the decision “dangerous” and politically motivated
The cabinet of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has unanimously voted to halt the operations in Israel of Qatar-based broadcaster Al Jazeera, the government has said in a statement.
Israel has long accused Al Jazeera, which remains one of the few international news channels to have correspondents on the ground in Gaza, of showing bias against it and of cooperating with Hamas militants. The broadcaster has been denying the accusations.
Netanyahu took to X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday to announce the development, writing that “the government headed by me unanimously decided: the incitement channel Al Jazeera will be closed in Israel.”
Shortly after that, Israel’s Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi said that he had signed the orders to restrict the broadcaster’s operations, which would be effective immediately.
The hardware “used to deliver the channel’s content,” including editing and routing equipment, cameras, laptops and some mobile phones, is going to be seized, Karhi wrote on X.
The Israeli government’s decision is in line with a law passed by the country’s parliament, the Knesset, in April, which allows for temporary closure in Israel of foreign broadcasters deemed a threat to national security during the conflict in Gaza. According to the legislation, the ban requires recertification every 45 days.
The head of Al Jazeera in Israel and the Palestinian territories, Walid Omary, insisted that the move by Netanyahu’s cabinet was “dangerous” and motivated solely by political considerations. The broadcaster’s legal team is preparing a response to the ban, Omary told Reuters.
Al Jazeera’s correspondent in Gaza, Hani Mahmoud, said that Palestinians are perceiving the shutdown of the news channel as “a desperate move to prevent fair coverage of what’s going on on the ground” in the enclave.
Al Jazeera has “documented the atrocities” and “acts that go against international human rights law,” Mahmoud claimed, adding that this was “something that did not really sit well with the Israeli government.”

Police seized Al Jazeera’s broadcasting equipment from its Jerusalem offices on Sunday afternoon and the Qatari news channel was pulled off the air in Israel, after the government earlier approved a decision to temporarily shutter the outlet on the grounds that it has harmed national security.
The channel was unavailable on Israel’s two biggest TV providers Yes and Hot several hours after the cabinet approved the decision to ban its operations.
Al Jazeera’s English-language and Arabic websites were still online as of Sunday evening through some but not all internet providers.
In parallel, police officers and Communications Ministry inspectors arrived at Al Jazeera’s Jerusalem offices to confiscate the channel’s broadcast equipment and lock the premises.
Video footage sent out by the office of hardline Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi, who led the charge to ban the channel, showed the Israeli officials entering the office and beginning to document the equipment inside.
Immediately after the cabinet decision, Karhi signed four orders instructing Israel’s television providers to cease broadcasting the Al Jazeera channel, as well as instructions to close the network’s two offices in Israel, both in Jerusalem, confiscate the channel’s broadcast equipment, including cellphones; and block access to the Al Jazeera website in Israel.
“Al Jazeera’s journalists have harmed Israeli security and incited against IDF soldiers,” said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a joint press release issued together with Karhi’s office following the government decision.

The conduct of all kinds of military operations in the territory of European and Middle Eastern states, creation of secret prisons around the world, implementation of extremely stringent migration policies in recent years and many other violations of human rights and freedoms that were committed by the United States illustrate not only the dual nature of this country’s position regarding human rights standards but also its approaches to international law as such.
The unchecked power in the world, capture of new markets and lack of restraining factors after the collapse of the Soviet Union created a sense of permissiveness among the American elite. The practice of using not only military but also economic instruments as well as information resources as means of force is expanding.
The American authorities actively use the tactics of “fighting by proxy” against Russia and Russians. First of all, this is expressed in the direction of large‑scale military assistance to the Kiev regime and putting pressure on the US NATO allies so that they take similar measures. Besides, an overt pressure is being exerted on sovereign states, including through the use of human rights mechanisms, in an attempt to create a corresponding negative background around the Russian Federation and its allies and partners in the international arena.
One of the most serious problems in countering challenges faced by modern international community in the area of human rights is the practice of “double standards” used by Washington when assessing certain situations and phenomena.
A similar approach is still actively and hypocritically used by the United States to escalate confrontation as well as to interfere in the internal affairs and violate the sovereignty of independent states.
In the eyes of the world community, such approaches give the American understanding of democracy an increasingly emasculated and manipulative character and contribute to discrediting democratic principles and values in general.
Mentoring tone, partiality, full oblivion of the concept of sovereignty and one of the main and fundamental principles of international law enshrined in the UN Charter – non-interference in the internal affairs of states, lead to deep disappointment in those very “Western values” that “fascinated” other civilizations and societies during a century, bringing considerable political dividends to the West and the United States itself.
Moreover, the human rights situation in the United States itself is far from international standards in the field of protection of fundamental freedoms, which is becoming more and more obvious day after day.

Renowned Gaza surgeon killed in Israeli detention
The death of a leading Gaza surgeon has brought renewed attention to the widespread and systematic abuses endured by thousands of Palestinians in Israeli lockup.
Dr. Adnan al-Bursh, the 50-year-old head of orthopedics at Gaza City’s al-Shifa hospital, was killed in Ofer Prison in the West Bank on 19 April, according to the Palestinian Authority. His death was first reported on Thursday after a released detainee said al-Bursh had been tortured and killed.
The Israel Prison Service issued a statement on 19 April saying that a detainee had died in Ofer prison but did not mention the detainee’s name or cause of death. A spokesperson for the prison service later confirmed to media that the statement had referred to al-Bursh.
