A really eye-opening update on the border crisis at the Southern Border today with the House GOP Caucus. Here’s some of what I learned:
1) We need to finish the border fence.
“In my opinion, the fence does work. It slows the migrants down,” said an agent.
“We definitely we need to bring the infrastructure. We need to bring the technology, and we need to bring the manpower.”
2) Santa Teresa border area (around Mt. Christo Rey) is the worst for human smuggling: 136,000 got-aways and 145,000 apprehended here. 106 illegal migrants died last year.
“El Paso sector this morning we’ve encountered over 3,200 criminal aliens through our system. And a lot of those 3,200 for El Paso sector — over 2,000 of them have been identified at the Santa [Teresa] station,” the agent said.
The cartels use kids as human shields and distractions for Border Patrol so they can smuggle. A Border Patrol agent told me a two-year-old was used as human bait recently and it’s a common occurrence.
3) New Mexico is THE ONLY STATE not doing its part in stemming the border crisis — and what other states are doing is working.
“The thing is, with all the things that they’re — not to get political — but all the things that are happening in Texas’ administration, the government over there, the hardening of the of the border right there where the fence and starts whichever way you look at it we’re starting to see it. This morning, we had a group of 30 people that just turned themselves in so that starts tying up our resources.” Texas’ Operation Lone Star, California’s CalGuard, and Arizona’s National Guard are all helping alleviate the crisis.
