The EU is facing a record number of “external and internal enemies,” who pose an existential threat to the bloc, French President Emmanuel Macron has said, doubling down on a warning he’d given earlier, that “our Europe” could end up dying.

Macron made the remarks while speaking alongside Germany’s head of state, President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, on the first of his three-day state visit. The two attended the Festival of Democracy, held in Berlin’s government quarter, to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the country’s constitution.

“I think that we are experiencing a moment in our Europe which is existential because I really believe that our Europe can die,” Macron stated, referring to a keynote speech he’d delivered in April.

Canada is outpacing other Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development nations in terms of how much money it’s dedicating to foreign aid.

In a recent analysis by the OECD, Canada has ranked seventh globally in terms of foreign aid expenditure.

The final bill of the 2023 fiscal year was a whopping USD $8 billion in taxpayer funding spent on foreign aid programs.

But not all of this money leaves Canada’s border. A significant portion of the bill was directed towards the support of refugees, asylum seekers, and displaced Ukrainians.

This figure represents 19% of the nation’s total foreign aid budget, surpassing the OECD average of 13.8%.

“Most Canadians would not think that counts, because when we think of foreign aid we think of something happening in other countries, not costs that we have here,” anti-poverty advocate and Canadian director of One Campaign Elise Legault told CTV News.

According to Legault, the Canadian government has yet to budge on its generous foreign aid spending, despite the growing costs of taking in refugees. Continue…

She is among a group of women and children who returned to the country after being in the Al-Roj detention camp for former ISIS militants.

Their return follows a deal brokered by Global Affairs Canada in January, which came after legal battles and advocacy efforts by families and advocates.

The Edmonton woman’s bail hearing took place promptly on Thursday night, where she was released under specific conditions.

University of Toronto seeks injunction to clear out anti-Israel encampment

As anti-Israel protesters at the University of Toronto continue their encampment past the departure deadline given by the school, the university is seeking a court order to remove them.

The protesters stayed past the Monday morning deadline that they were given to strike a deal with the university administration and clear out.

When the encampment was first established on May 2, protesters were given a one-day trespass notice, though more than three weeks later, they are still very much embedded.

University of Toronto president Meric Gertler announced that the school has filed for an expedited case with the Ontario Superior Court of Justice for an injunction order.

In response, Ontario union leaders rallied at the encampment Monday morning and said they are seeking intervener status in the case to delay and stop the injunction.

A frightening new statistic sheds light on how the deadly opioid crisis is impacting Canadian youth.

The recreational use of opioids among junior high and high school students during the past year in Ontario has surged from 12.7% in 2021 to 21.8% in 2023, an increase of 9.1%, according to the Ontario Student Drug Use and Health Survey.

The previous two-year increase was only 1.7% when the use of opioids within the past year among students increased from 11% to 12.7% between 2019 and 2021.

The Ontario Student Drug Use and Health Survey has been surveying students in grades 7 to 12 in Ontario since 1977. As the longest ongoing school survey in Canada and one of the longest in the world, its purpose is to analyze trends in drug use, mental health, physical health, bullying, gambling, and other risk behaviours among Ontario students.
